Description

A charming series debut featuring two American sleuths in Paris, Death in Paris is a perfect traditional mystery for fans of M. L. Longworth and Juliet Blackwell.

The only thing chillier than a Parisian winter is cold-blooded murder.

When French financier Edgar Bowen drowns in a bowl of soup, his former girlfriend, American Rachel Levis, is alarmed by the unnatural death. Who dies eating a nice vichyssoise? But when she overhears a mourner at his funeral describing the circumstances of his death, something sounds even stranger: a bottle of rose was on the dining table when he died. The only problem: Edgar loathed rose. If he wasn’t drinking it, who was?

After the police rule the death accidental, Rachel knows it’s up to her and her best friend Magda to investigate. As the two Americans immerse themselves in Edgar’s upper-class world, the list of suspects grows: Could it have been his son, who inherited his money and lavish apartment? His icy ex-wife? His greedy new girlfriend? His impoverished personal assistant?

But when the suspects start dropping like flies, Rachel and Magda realize the murderer is tying up loose ends. It’ll be up to two amateur sleuths to solve their first case before the murderer decides they’re next...

Emilia Bernhard's debut mystery, Death in Paris (A Mystery) is absolutely delightful and charming! When French businessman, Edgar Bowen, is found dead, face down a bowl of vichyssoise next to a bottle of rosé, it is ruled an accidental death by the Paris police. But his former American girlfriend, Rachel Levis knows better. Edgar would never be caught dead drinking rosé. Now it is up to her and her best friend, Magda, to become amateur investigatrices to find out what happened and qui est coupable!

I loved this book. What's not to love? Set in Paris (my favorite place), Bernhard creates characters that feel like old friends, familiar and funny. I imagine them to be like Nancy Drew and her best friend, Georgia (George), only grown up, moved to Paris, and decided to solve crimes again after a long hiatus. I could see wanting to hang out with them and ponder the particulars with them over a coffee or a cocktail. A twist at every corner and a long (and growing) list of suspects, one can be sure these two sleuths would give Nancy Drew a run for their money.

This book was fun to read, I didn't want to put it down. And I want to be friends with Rachel and Magda. One can only hope there are future cases to solve for these two investigatrices.

The only flaw I see in this book, is that Edgar didn't like rosé. Maybe that's why he was killed? Pick up the book this October to see if Rachel and Magda can solve the case...

A well written book, which is very enjoyable and hold interest in the mystery. I love how Paris is brought to life by the well developed characters and the .gentle nod to the language via phrases and descriptions. I really enjoyed this book , a novel murder of death by drowning in a bowl of soup, in fact the ending also had a little twist in itself.
Enjoyable

When a French businessman is found dead next to a bottle of rose, the French police believe it an accidental death. But his ex-girlfriend knows better--her former boyfriend loathed rose. So, Rachel recruits her best friend, Magda, to figure out what really happened.

Such a fun read! I loved the Paris setting and the funny, witty characters. I really hope there are further adventures with Rachel and Magda!

After reading so many detective stories and watching all the detective shows, sometimes I wonder - when the opportunity comes, will I be able to play a cool detective myself. When Rachel Levis got this chance - she used all her knowledge and help of her best friend Magda to resolve the murder of a Parisian financier Edgar Bowen. Well, the fact that Edgar and Rachel had a short love affair many years prior also gave detective Levis additional push to hunt down the cold-hearted murderer.

The story begins one lovely winter morning, during the breakfast, Rachel comes across the article that informs her of the passing of Edgar Bowen. She quickly shares the news with her husband, who simply dismisses it. But Rachel is not a person who gives up easily. She decides to pay respect to her old friend/lover by attending his funeral, where she hears more details regarding the state of the room where Edgar's body was found. And at last, Rachel makes her debut as a detective, lists of the suspects and starts her own investigation. But what our little detective doesn't expect is another murder (or two).

The ending of the story was quite unexpected. Emilia Bernhard caught me off guard there. A wonderful novel, perfect descriptions of Paris areas and cafes/restaurants. Fantastic set of characters, and the right amount (you know I always complain when there are too many characters that don't really play a big part in the story). After reading this book - I will definitely follow Rachel and Magda's future "cases". The story is short, easy to read and takes you straight to the point with all gripping details to captivate reader's attention.

Suspend disbelief and enjoy this comfy and enjoyable light mystery set in the City of Light. The two sleuths have been friends for years and share a fascination with tv cop shows and other mysteries but decide to investigate the death of one they knew years ago simply because there are discrepancies that are bothersome. The characters are interesting and well depicted and made very believable, and so are the descriptions of places in Paris. No car chases, no erotica, no horror or bleepable language, just an interesting mystery guaranteed to tickle the brain.

I would call this a cosy mystery, rather than an edge of the seat thriller, which to be honest was fine by me, I am cosy reader!

I liked the lead characters of Rachel and Magda very much, the descriptions of Paris and the ''cafe culture' took me back there in my mind.

A twist at the end will keep readers coming back for more of the same from this author.

Highly recommended
