Description

The once-famous Hotel Iberia was where society’s finest gathered in the days before 1859 when Victory, Louisiana became a ghost town. A building where people had laughed, dined and passed the time among friends became something dark, sinister and evil.

The town was dead, so no one complained when the Victory Institution for the Criminally Insane opened in the old hotel. The state sent its problems to the Asylum — violent, disturbed men who entered the gates of hell and never came back. Hundreds died inside those walls before scandal closed the prison in 1907 and the corpses of those forgotten men were buried in a cemetery at the back of the property.

For a century, the building has been abandoned. But only by the living. The dead couldn’t leave. Their tormented spirits couldn’t escape the horrors they had experienced. Unspeakable things kept them locked in the ancient cell blocks, doomed to haunt the building forever.

Rookie deputy sheriff Landry Drake discovers that a wealthy physician owns both the Asylum and an adjacent island where it’s rumored that the Treasure of Bayou Teche was buried by pirate Jean Lafitte. Landry meets the physician’s daughter Cate and she gives him a tour of the old prison.

Soon Landry discovers a clue that links a series of unsolved murders over the years. He and Cate go back to the prison and are caught in a trap. Kidnapped and chained in an underground torture chamber, they know what fate awaits them at the hands of a maniacal sociopath. He’s killed many times before, and they will be next.

He manages to free them and discover a link to a series of unsolved murders at the Asylum over the past thirty years. He goes back out to see if his theories are true and discovers that a violent prison escapee has hidden below the ground at the old prison for decades. With the authorities closing in, Mad Mack Thorn summons the spirits that inhabit the old house and the prison cemetery for a final conclave.

Advance Praise

Praise for Book 1 in the Callie: The Bayou Hauntings Book 1
“Bill Thompson blends the past and present together to provide a page turning read that kept me guessing as the story unfolded. I loved the civil war story of the plantation, not to mention the tragedy that occurred then. A haunting read that is mystery, paranormal and a little civil war history to boot. I will certainly read the next book in The Bayou Hauntings series.” – Goodreads review

“This is the first book I have read by Bill Thompson and I completely enjoyed it. I found it difficult to put down. Page after page I became closer to the edge of my seat. The author has created characters you love and characters you hate. Can't wait for the next book to follow.” – Goodreads review

Marketing Plan

About the Author:

If variety is the spice of life, author Bill Thompson’s is on fire!  Over the years, and in no particular order, Thompson has been: an international insurance broker, real estate broker, mayor, head of a state prison board, stockbroker, newspaper reporter, Bourbon Street piano player, presented to Queen Elizabeth and Prince Philip, an observer at a knighting in Westminster, in jail (briefly … and wrongly!), a goat herder, president of an animal shelter, a world traveler, caregiver, and most importantly, a husband, father and grandfather.

Thompson became a corporate entrepreneur at an early age. By age 12 he started a company to buy and sell coins. By age 25 he had started an insurance agency that ultimately became one of the largest in Oklahoma. Expanding that firm and adding more, Thompson created a financial services holding company that operated in several states plus Bermuda, the Cayman Islands and England. He later sold these interests to join his son as an executive in a computer memory manufacturing and distribution company, which by 1995 had grown to be in the top ten nationally by sales.

Shortly after the sale of his company, Thompson decided to pursue his lifelong passion and began writing archaeological fiction. Since childhood, Thompson had a burning interest in archaeological finds, mysteries of the past, unexplained things in the jungle and stories of adventure in remote places. Over the years he has traveled extensively around the world and has visited sites such as Machu Picchu, Stonehenge, Avebury, many sites in Egypt, Petra and ancient Maya ruins in Mexico, Belize and Guatemala. Now an award-winning novelist, Thompson currently resides with his wife and three great dogs in Dallas, Texas.
