Description
After the death of her beloved grandmother a young woman discovers a box of letters from World War II that will both destroy the life she knew and bring her a better understanding of her true identity.
The letters that would forever alter my identity were in a decorative candy tin, tucked under the bed on her side, hidden but within easy reach. I had walked into the room to do the task no one else could handle. It was a room full of dusty smells combined with a powdery rose scent from my grandmother's favorite talc. The closet door was open, her daughter, my aunt had been in and chosen the burial outfit. After that she vowed never to return to the house. I wanted to believe that the last few years of Gramma's dementia had taken their toll on my aunt and she was simply exhausted from the burden of care. In my heart, I knew it was something more because the day to day care was not on her. After my parent's death the dementia seemed to be exacerbated and I moved in with grandma the week after my grandfather's funeral because my aunt threatened to put her in a home. I couldn't stand the idea of her losing her son, her husband and then her home too. How was I to know the woman I had loved so much was keeping a deep secret? Did she leave the letters so I would discover the truth, were they too precious to destroy or were they simply forgotten? With her gone, would I ever understand?Advance Praise
