Description

What would you do if you found a mysterious book written in a secret language?

Thirteen-year-old Denny’s life is far from easy. He’s at the bottom of the food chain at school, he works a mind-numbingly boring student job at his uncle’s shredding store, and, on top it all, he has to try out for the school basketball team—and let’s just say basketball’s not his strong point.

But one day, he finds an ancient book in an indecipherable language. Could it be a secret code? Or maybe even… magic?
As Denny starts spinning a fantasy tale around the book, the real world begins to fade from view. It won’t be long before his problems catch up with him, crashing down one by one…

Thrilling, moving, and funny, The Bird Queen’s Book is an inspiring story of friendship, loss, and a boy trying to find his place in the world.

The Bird Queen's Book is a magical read. It features two stories at once and both are really intruiging; especially Danny is such a likeable character. In general, the book is well-written and captivating. It’s a sad, beautiful, and funny story that moves its readers.

This book has two storylines , one is a fictional and the other is real life story . The story starts with a boy named Danny who is trying to cope with his mothers sudden demise . He starts writing a book of wizards and talks to an imaginary friend . This book is refreshing and anyone who loves harry potter series can reads it without any doubt . I loved the storyline :)

Denny is a 7th grader trying to navigate middle school friendships, girls and the death of his mom. He is trying to bond with his by training for the basketball try-outs, even though he hates sports. His real passion is writing. When he finds a book written in a language he can't decipher, he creates his own story based on the cover picture.

This is a great mix of relatable coming of age storyline and a fantasy adventure played out in Denny's writing. It is an engaging, quick read. My one criticism is the use of swearing in a book meant for tweens/teens.

Also, I think the ending would have been better if it stopped at "I like your version better", and omitted the last sentence.

Denny is 13. His mom was killed by a drunk driver, his dad is a PE coach, and he works at his Uncle's shredding company removing paperclips from papers. One day he finds a book written in a foreign language in a box of things to be shredded. The cover catches his eyes, and he keeps it. After researching the text and pictures, he can't find anything to help him figure out what the book is about. One day he gets the idea to write a story about what he thinks the book is about.

This was a really cute story told from two points of view. One is the real-life middle school life of Denny, the second was a beautiful fantasy adventure he creates.

This is such a delightful book that opens up a world of imagination and magic.

Denny 13 is not the popular guy at school, you will find him in the library rather than the sports field. He is bought up by his father as his mother died in a traffic accident and as his father is a P. E teacher he pretends to want to be in the basketball team even though he has no talent for it as he thinks this will please his father.

When working at his Uncle Pete’s shredding company he finds a book amongst invoices that need shredding that’s written in a strange language, this intrigued Denny who tries to decipher the book.

Denny’s imagination takes over and we enter a world of wizards and magic where he imagines what the book is about.

The story is told in 2 timelines where Denny is writing his version of the book and where he is trying to survive at school after falling out with his best friend Max and pretending to his dad that he has a female friend!!

If you are a fan of Harry Potter and other magical stories you will love this book. Suitable for all ages!!

A wonderful look at friendship that also deals with loss also. Would love to read more about the wonderful world of Dacus and his training to be a wizard.

Thank you to Netgalley for my copy in exchange for a review.
