I breezed through this gem of a book last night, and am looking forward to trying the recipes and using the entertainment tips. The Southern Living Party Cookbook is clear and concise, broken down into 5 sections (Teas, Coffees, and Receptions; Brunches and Lunches; Come By For A Drink Y'All; Cookouts; Celebrations and Dinners), with droolworthy photos of everything, including gorgeous tablescapes. Fun tips are scattered throughout, and this lovely volume would be great to pick up for yourself (also makes a great coffee table book!) or to give as a gift. Very nicely done!

This book has everything you expect from a Southern Living Publication. There are tips for entertaining and hosting, mouth-watering recipes and beautiful photography that inspires us all to throw a party. I do recognize some of the recipes from previous Southern Living books so you probably shouldn't expect all new content but there are some amazing recipes that I can't wait to try.

I voluntarily read and reviewed an advanced copy of this book. All thoughts and opinions are my own.

I did not think it was possible for Elizabeth Heiskell to top her last cookbook, "What Can I Bring?," but she's done it. The recipes and the menus are even better, and there are lots of hosting tips and beautiful photos of food and tables for inspiration. This would be a fantastic holiday gift for friends and family.

Beautiful book that is more than a cookbook!
In a way this book is a mixture of party ideas, stories from the author and her life and the different parties and ideas behind them she experienced or hosted as well as a wonderful mixture of recipes and full party menu's.

I found this entire book beautiful to read through and look at the pictures alone, since honestly its just a stunningly done book!

But the recipes are also very nice and even though i haven't tried all of them -or any of the alcoholic drink ones- i am sure that they all work!

If you are interested in this book?
Highly recommend it!

Southern Living cookbooks are among my favorites, and this one did not disappoint! Many occasions represented with well put-together menus consisting of recipes that are simple enough for almost anyone to handle and the photography, as always with SL cookbooks, is gorgeous. I can't wait to try some of these recipes!

After downloading the Southern living party cookbook to my computer I was delightfully surprised to find many recipes not only from the past but new ones pertaining to today’s lifestyle.. The book was not only well organized but extremely easy to navigate., Clearly written recipes are easy to follow. and relate immediately to outstanding photographs, unlike many cookbooks where you have to search for the recipe after seeing the photograph. A book every cook could benefit from in their library.

I am definitely ready for the upcoming holiday season now. Full of great tips and recipes, just what you'd expect from Southern Living.

I love Southern Living books. They are always beautiful to look at with wonderful pictures. They include recipes that I love to try. This book did not disappoint. This is the perfect book if you like to entertain and throw parties. It starts with Etiquette and invites with very helpful information. One of my favorite additions to the book is buffet feng shui. It describes how to lay out a visually appealing buffet. We sometimes get in a rut of laying out our food and it gives us great ideas. It also shows a table setting fit for a queen. Labels all the different parts as well. This is all before the delicious recipes. They also included estimating quantities. This is one of the hardest things for me. The menu ideas for parties starts at Teas, Coffees and Receptions and goes all the way to Tailgates. If you like to entertain you need this book. At the end it shares ideas form the 1972 version of this book. It has been reinterpreted and updated. I think you will enjoy it.

The Southern living cookbook first came out in 1972. It was filled with tips and tricks for throwing the perfect party, host and hostess etiquette, and of course recipes. This book is not much different in what it contains but it is more up to date. Since we no longer go to back yard barbecues wearing suits, it needed and update.

There are still tons of great recipes in the book, that also have pictures. There are full party plans for barbecues, brunches, lunches, wine tasting, celebrations, dinners, and more.

The book has decorating ideas, what types of dishes and glasses to use and so much more. Everything you need for an impressive southern party.

I received this book from the Author or Publisher via Netgalley.com to read and review.

While the photos accompanying the recipes are gorgeous and the recipes easy to follow, "The Southern Living Party Cookbook" isn't just a cookbook: It is a comprehensive guide to hosting a wide variety of parties and gatherings. From brunch to showers, this book has everything covered. While some books have titles that oversell the content, this one doesn't begin to cover the wide variety of hosting topics covered. Don't know how to set the table? This book has it. Not sure what the protocol is for invitations and RSVPs? It's in there. In a time where people are returning to cooking at home and throwing parties on their own, this guide is a true treasure.

Loveful book. Elizabeth shares her great experience in elegant parties. The list of recipes is incredible and amazing: colorful and tasteful recipes from canapes & chic drinks to main dishes. The selection is adapted for any type of parties like graduation or chic banquet.

A beautiful book that takes the pressure off entertaining. Elizabeth Heiskell lays out everything a new host needs to plan a gathering of any size and type. Tips for glassware, serving dishes, silverware, etiquette, buffets, various styles of parties, and so much more is laid out in an easy to follow format. The photography is luxurious in feel and makes me wish I would be invited to Heiskell's next soiree.

Five stars for The Southern Living Party Cookbook; A Modern Guide to Gathering! This book starts with a hosting handbook and then is divided into different types of events that someone could host. With each event there is a gorgeous picture included of what the set up/scheme could look like to give th reader inspiration for the event idea. As a reader, it made me want to have a reason to host all of these events as soon as possible. As a visual person, I appreciated the gorgeous pictures of the table scheme, invitation ideas and all of the recipes.
With each main course, side dish and dessert, there are notes and special details that include substitutions or tips to help preserving or cooking the dish that every host would get from a recipe passed down or given by a true friend.
I love that Elizabeth Heiskell includes a special personal story or anecdote with each event to give the reader an idea of when to have this kind of event or meal planned and how it worked for her.
This book would be perfect for a newly married couple, a person starting off on their own, or just someone interested in new recipes or hosting certain events, special meals for friends or family. I loved it all!

I received an Advanced Reader Copy from Southern Living for my unbiased opinion of the book. This entertaining/cookbook/etiquette guide is worth its weight in gold! It has everything you could possibly want in this type of book. I loved every page from the place setting, drinking glass, menu planning ideas and more! I gladly made wonder wings with cider vinegar-brown butter honey drizzle, sausage balls, bacon waffles with pecan chicken tenders, blue cheese bacon dip, she-crab soup, cheese straw tomato tartlets, bourbon balls, peach melba, frozen lemon cream, and beef fondue. The recipes were easy to read as well as follow. I didn't have a single leftover! I will be giving this book out at Christmas time and it already has become one of my most treasured entertaining reference guides!

I collect cookbooks of all kinds, and like them from different regions and countries. I picked this one because it is hard to find good ones that are for parties. This one fit the bill for me. From teas, brunches, cookouts and celebrations it is in here for every party occasion. As an added bonus it has how to do invites, different drinking glasses, setting the table, food quanities and more. I am anxious to try the Pimento Cheese Biscuits with Ham, MaMa's Fried Chicken, Candied Bacon Grissini and Seven Layer Cookies. Illustrations are beautiful and appetizing in this book. I recommend it for any cook or baker.

I borrowed this book through NetGalley to review. However, I loved it so much that I have pre-ordered it. Now to be fair, I have not read the original 1972 version. However, I have such a large extended family and we attend at least 3 parties a month. Now that I am older and will actually begin hosting parties, this book is an amazing guidebook for being a successful host. Not only is this book easy to read with the author's witty commentary and anecdotes but it provides a plethora of recipes, information, party menus and stunning photos for inspiration. Although I may not be throwing formal dinner parties, the information from the hosting handbook is probably one of my favorite sections. The estimating quantities section for food and drink is probably one of the most useful pages of this book that I will probably reference every time I will host a party. And the recipes included are very reasonable and do not require unusual ingredients that are difficult to find or need a dozen people to help prepare the day of the party. The most unusual ingredients are mostly in the alcoholic drinks such as the edible gold leaf flakes for the fancy congealed cocktail shots or angostora bitters for the old fashioned. However, the other recipes are straight forward. I tried a few recipes and was surprised at how tasty they were with minimal effort. I will be hosting a baby shower in a few weeks and this book has inspired me to add some southern hospitality.

Another home run for Elizabeth Heiskell. Gorgeous photos, feel good anecdotes, and delicious looking recipes make this a perfect book to give this holiday season. Even though I received an advanced digital copy from NetGalley, I have already preordered a signed copy from my local bookstore. The recipes are a perfect blend of old and new (brandy Alexander’s and bourbon-infused coffee milk punch, for example) and are the type of recipe that you will actually cook and bring to things, not just stare at in a cookbook. If you have her “What Can I Bring” cookbook and are wondering whether you need this one too, the answer is YES. And go ahead and buy her first cookbook Somebody Stole the Cornbread from the Dressing while you’re at it!

Thank you NetGalley for giving me an advanced digital copy in exchange for an honest review!

First, I was given this book by NetGalley in exchange for a fair review. I love Southern Living Cookbooks, and own a number of them. This is another great entry with beautiful photos, interesting recipes and the stories behind them. The book covers many different types of parties from small intimate gatherings to large ones, barbecues to elegant occasions. Most of the recipes are simple and easy to follow and sound delicious. If you love beautifully illustrated cookbooks, this is a great addition to any cooks collection. This review will be posted on GoodReads, Amazon, Barnes & Noble and Facebook.

Netgalley review.: Being a long time subscriber to Southern Living magazine,I was excited to review this cookbook. Many party cookbooks are too “elegant” for my laid back lifestyle. I loved that it incorporated elegant and simple themes alike. You can go for fancy with such recipes as Salmon Cucumber Tea Sandwiches to something as simple as Fried Pork Chops. Categories include: Teas and coffees,Drinks,Cookouts,Brunches and Celebration Dinners. Some of my favorite recipes included are:Candied Bacon Grissini(pig candy) Yum!,Crunchy Cheese Coins,Mint Chocolate Truffles,Finger Sandwiches w/Olive Spread and Cornbread Dressing. Although there are many recipes I would never make or have the occasion to use them ,there are also many that I would.

This cookbook is not only great for entertaining and parties, but it’s also excellent for everyday use.

Each chapter offers you a different party and at the beginning of the chapter, you get a picture of a decorated table so you can grab some inspirations off of that and then you dig into the recipes for that party. You have parties such as Graduation Coffee, Welcome Tea, Tailgating, Thanksgiving dinner, Garden Club Luncheon, Impress the boss and many more party choices.

Now, as I said this cookbook can also be used every day, but with the majority of these recipes severing 10 and up all you have to do is cut the recipes in half as I did. So, far I have made the Chocolate –Bourbon Pecan Pie and The Cowboy Bean and loved both of them.

Great images, easy to follow recipes what more can anyone ask for.

Take this from someone who has way too many cookbooks and cooking magazines, this cookbook would be an excellent addition to your ever-growing collection.

The Southern Living Party Cookbook: A Modern Guide to Gathering by Elizabeth Heiskell is an amazing, beautiful and romantic book about Southerners traditions published by Meredith. This new guide divided per theme and precious moments to spend all together will be in grade to offer to all of you a lot of tips, recipes, new ideas for the most important occasions of your life.
This book is an update of what previously lived and shared and experienced by grand-mothers and mothers of the South, precise the author with strength, focusing in particular in the great hospitality of Southerners.
Chapters are: Teas, Coffees and Reception, Brunches and Lunches, Come By for a Drink Y'all, Cookouts, Celebrations and Dinners.
Elizabeth remembers in this book the old times and how in their family, feasts, weddings and other important remarkable events were celebrated also thanks to the help of her grand-mother and mother. They are captivating stories of the past and the reflection of the present.

Extremely elegant, I immediately fell in love for this book because of it's wonderful pictures, tales; because it is in grade to speak at the heart and appetite of everyone! with delicious recipes, great desserts and dishes. I would classify The Southern Living Party as a good manners cookbook.

Highly recommended.

I thank Meredith and NetGalley for this ebook.

I've never read the original Southern Living Party Cookbook, but I have to say that Elizabeth Heiskell has done a fantastic job with this new updated version. From the cover to every picture-perfect table setting, the book is visually stunning and the recipes quintessentially Southern--but now with a little update. If this book is a snapshot of the work she does with her own parties, I want to be invited to her next one! She inspires you to be a better cook and a better hostess, and she all makes it sound so easy.

The book is split into little digestible sections with each section representing a different excuse for a party. While some of them are kind of flimsy excuses to feed people, I do admire the sentiment. I too like to host and will find every reason to get people together. Rather than divide the book by course, as cookbooks often do, each section provides its own menu, from hors d'oeuvres to mains to side dishes and dessert. I don't have a preference for any particular way of organizing recipes so I enjoyed this.

The recipes themselves all sound both delicious and elegant. They're all doable, but they're also dishes that wouldn't be out of place on a catering menu, which is not surprising as Elizabeth Heiskell is a caterer herself. Some of the recipes are from the original cookbook, and those are denoted at the bottom of the page. Recipes like beef bourguignon and peach Melba never go out of style. Others are her own, yet they fit in so well with the original recipes. Stuffed endive leaves with goat cheese are modern and elegant, as are prosciutto-wrapped asparagus with citrus drizzle. The recipes are, for the most part, very doable for the average home cook. She doesn't shy away from telling you to use store-bought, ready-made ingredients when she feels it wouldn't make a substantial difference. This is a book with the cook in mind, and I appreciated that.

It was really hard to find anything wrong with this book, and I have to say, the attention to detail is so great that I don't think I ever found one. I found myself bookmarking almost every recipe, as they all sounded absolutely delicious, and this is a book that would make an excellent bridal shower gift. Elizabeth Heiskell should be proud of herself for producing a book that not only honors the legacy of the original, but also carves out its own unique niche.

Perusing the pages of The Southern Living Party Cookbook makes you want to plan a gathering. This cookbook is an update to Southern Living's 1972 best-selling cookbook. There are so many ideas from summer fetes like fish frys and picnics to other seasonal gatherings and fancy dinner parties. Before the recipes start, though there is a hosting handbook complete with buffet feng shui, glass types, how to set the table, etc. The cookbook is divided into party types and each a has a menu or grouping of recipes (food and drink). The recipes are accompanied by photos and tips for setting a festive tone. The food in this cookbook is approachable and complementary to the type of function is planned for. The only drawback is that this book is not vegetarian-friendly.
