THE ACCIDENT occurred on the wet and slick Ohio Turnpike after a morning rain. Forty-five year old Adanya Moore, a very dedicated second generation police officer, arrives on a horrific scene of mangled vehicles, some overturned, at least two motorcycles, medical personnel and equipment, and hovering news station helicopters, with at least ten individuals injured and two deceased. The injured were transported to either Edon or Franklin hospital.

As Officer Moore makes one final assessment before the State Police takes over, she hears someone calling for help and discovers a trapped man with blood covering half his face from a possible head trauma; he is unable to give them his name. After rescuers remove him from the burning truck and medical personnel whisk him away to the hospital in Edon, Moore discovers a wallet on the ground that contains a picture driver’s license that looks like that injured man
.
One of the injured men was taken to Franklin, and a CT scan determined that not only was he brain dead, but he had a pre-existing brain tumor that was going to kill him sooner or later anyway. Since he couldn’t be identified nor his next of kin notified, he was placed on life support until a family member could be found and a decision could be made. At the risk of losing her job, Nurse Leah takes it upon herself to help find John Doe’s family.

In addition to Officer Moore and Nurse Leah, the narrative, which skips back and forth in time, also covers the back stories of other individuals who were affected by the accident. Ben, a traveling bank employee, is a physically and mentally abusive husband to his wife Kaitlyn, who is employed as a teacher. Army veteran Adam, a ninth-grade schoolteacher, had previously dated Kaitlyn in college.

As I reflect back on this story, I realize that although the writing could be more polished, the premise of the book is brilliant—how one incident—in this case, an automotive accident—had an impact and domino effect on the lives of many—the investigating officers, the medical personnel, spouses, family, to name a few. Once you get used to the time skips, you will not want to put this book down. The future career of this author looks very promising.

When Officer Adanya Moore saves a man after a horrific accident, she is drawn into his story. Another man is brain dead and is a John Doe, but a more than dedicated nurse, Leah, goes above and beyond to find his family. Both women will cross paths accidentally with the help of Adanya’s partner. Kaitlyn Gordon is not pleased to hear her husband may be alive, not with the past of abuse. Yet, Kaitlyn will find out about someone from her past who she thought she lost, Adam.
This story is a thriller in that Kaitlyn’s efforts to escape her husband come close to happening. Romance may come around for Adanya who doesn’t think it will ever happen as stubborn as she is. Leah could finally find a woman from her past, one that she’s not sure she wants to know.
There are twists and turns in identities even to the very end. Life changes in an instant. What would you do in each of these character’s shoes? Is there truly a second chance for anyone? I did get chills when I read the very last chapter. You will too.

A quirky tale of the aftermath of a multi-vehicle accident where the lives of five people become intertwined. What are the chances something like this would happen? Regardless, it held my interest throughout, even in the parts that described horrible domestic violence.

Police officer Adayna Moore receives a call out for a horrific accident. When she arrives on the scene, she is stunned by the carnage. She faintly hears someone calling for help. Alerting the firemen and paramedics, they rescue the man. Little does Adayna know that this meeting will alter her life.

Kaitlyn is married to Ben. He is abusive in the extreme and very concerned with his own life and not anyone else’s. While in the beginning of the story, the reader has no idea what Kaitlyn’s story has to do with Adayna’s story, the link will become clear.

This is an interesting and intriguing story. I like the way the author ties it all together. There are some surprises in this book. In some ways, it is rather predictable, however. It is a well written tome, and I enjoyed reading about Kaitlyn and Adayna. I will certainly look into other books by Ms. Zadunajsky.

I want to thank NetGalley and Donna Zadunajsky for forwarding to me a copy of this good book for me to read, enjoy and review.

I was excited to try The Accident as it had a different premise from most other books. It is always nice to try something new. I really enjoyed this book. I was engaged right from the start and it definitely held my interest all the way through.

There are several stories here and although initially I thought it was going to be too much, it somehow blended in well.

We have Adanya an officer of the law. Her story is separate. We have Kaitlyn whose story is quite separate. Kaitlyn is married and on the surface everything seems fine. Her husband is a twisted abusive who has no qualms about hitting her at every turn, even in the past to force a miscarriage.

Adanya has a heavy secret. When she was a teenager she had a baby, she gave the baby away for adoption, a decision tinged with deep regret and sadness.

Kaitlyn had a great love in Adam who went to Afghanistan and then she got involved with her husband to her deep regret. Now that she has conceived again, she is determined to run away, create a new identity and bring up this baby alone. All that changes when a grievous accident affects the lives of all of the above.

In twists and turns, some plausible, some slightly not we are taken into the next step of both Adanya and Kaitlyn's lives - thank goodness for the better and happier.

This story has good bones, but a lot of repetitions and too many coincidences. It was a quick read, and involved several viewpoints and premises, so I gave it three and a half stars. I was very much interested in the authors' information at the end of the book concerning her work with and for the matter of teen suicides and bullying. I will be reading and reviewing Help Me! and Talk to Me in the near future.

I received a free electronic copy of The Accident from Netgalley, Donna M. Zadunajsky and self published through Mystery and Thrillers, Women's Fiction in exchange for an honest review. Thank you all for sharing your hard work with me.

One tragic accident on the turnpike, two injured, and three others-- all whose lives will be changed forever as a consequence of this event. Leah is a nurse, Adayna the cop, and Kaitlyn the battered wife. These three women's lives converge and are altered irrevocably by circumstances that evolve when two injured men are hospitalized. While some of it may seem contrived and too co-incidental, it's a sweet story. I was a bit confused at first as it jumps back and forth from the day of the accident to two weeks before, to nine years before, to present, etc. But once I caught on, I just let the novel unfold. And even though I had guessed one of the secrets, it was still a satisfying and solid read.

The Accident by Donna M. Zadunajsky – 4 Stars
Publisher: Donna M. Zadunajsky
ISBN: 9781724019165

The Accident is a character-driven novel about a group of people brought together by a tragic multi-vehicle accident. Each of the characters has a complex, tragic, and compelling life story. Their lives intertwine in ways that sometimes may lack believability, but the overall story is quite enjoyable. Topics include spousal abuse and adoption which are handled with empathy and understanding. Like most lives, the elements in this novel work together to yield some happy endings.

This book had a premise that differs from many of the everyday storylines. The Accident had me glued to the story from the start. An accident with many people involved! What was going to happen? (Somehow I felt a touch of Tim Kizer in the mix?) As "mismatched" people arrived at two hospitals the interesting read began to fade a little. A bit predictable yet able to still pull off a decent read. Strong, likeable characters (for the most part) contributed to a quick read. All loose ends were tied up - no one was kept guessing by the ending. All in all a very interesting read !
