But it also embraces a design spirit that is daring and innovative. Every year brings changes to Wave Hill: new combinations of colors, textures, and forms, along with creative themes and constant experimentation. Nature into Art brings this splendid, sensory experience home by honoring the unsurpassed beauty of Wave Hill. It explores the different areas of the garden—the flower garden, the shade border, the wild garden, the conservatory, and more—and gives gardeners helpful information on the plants, techniques, and design choices that define this iconic space. Filled with stunning, ethereal photography by Ngoc Minh Ngo, Nature into Art will enchant and inspire you to practice the Wave Hill way of gardening.

This is a great book for a gardener or a landscaper. It could be used in a horticulture class. Older students might enjoy this and it could be used as a reference book.

I don’t know what drew me to this book. I had never heard of WaveHill before, but after reading this book, I definitely would love to see it next time I am in New York if I am in that area. This is such a great combination of pictures and gardening design.

I had no idea that a unique garden like this existed in New York! This is a book well worth owning just for the photographs alone which are stunning. A must-read book for anyone who loves gardens and enjoys reading the history of various gardens, just because the histories are fascinating.
I voluntarily read and reviewed an advanced copy of this book. All thoughts and opinions are my own.

Wave Hill is a hidden gem in New York, and I loved how beautifully this book captured it. In addition to the stunning photos and descriptions, the book includes how-to tips like a recipe for potting mix and how to build an alpine trough for gardeners feeling inspired by this book.

Nature into Art follows the well-documented history of the Gardens at Wave Hill in the Bronx. Thomas Christopher sets this book apart from other gardening books by using Wave Hill as the one ultimate example of what a garden can be. It is contrived and natural, soft and harsh, planned and accidental. He explains the way that Wave Hill is set apart from other gardens because they made the decision to break gardening's conventional beauty rules, but in every photo, you can see how stunningly beautiful the outcome was. This is a great book for anyone looking to learn more about Wave Hill, some fundamental ideas about gardening, or just to gain inspiration!

This book fills the void of content that inspires readers to look at nature as a work of art. It also expresses the opportunity that we often miss in finding art within our natural surroundings.

Nature into Art: The Gardens of Wave Hill is a coffee table art/gardening book documenting the gardens at Wave Hill in the Bronx, NY. Due out 17th Sept. 2019 from Timber Press, it's 288 pages and will be available in hardcover format.

This is a stunning book. The photography is exquisite. Paging through the photos had me itching to get out in my own (very modest) garden. The text accompanying the photographs is interesting, well and simply written, and provides a glimpse of the historical development of the gardens and estate. There are also numerous archival photos of the site and Perkins family, who donated the property to the City of New York in 1960.

I'm reminded of the famous Gertrude Jekyll quote: "In garden arrangement, as in all other kinds of decorative work, one has not only to acquire a knowledge of what to do, but also to gain some wisdom in perceiving what it is well to let alone.". The gardeners who keep Wave Hill going are masters of restraint and discernment.

A beautiful book. This would make a superlative gift or library book. It wouldn't be remiss in the library of any gardening club, and will provide many hours of inspiration

Five stars.

This is a beautiful book with amazing pictures to inspire any gardener! I would have given the book five stars, but as a novice gardener, I would have loved more details and how-to's. I have definitely added Wave Hill as a place to go see if I'm ever visiting New York.

A beautifully put together historical and seasonal book that teaches us the special history of New York’s Wave Hill public garden. Once a sprawling estate, that fell to sad times, only to be reborn as one of America’s most beautiful public parks. Put together with wonderful photographs by Ngoc Minh Ngo, who has brought out the eye of not only a photographer, but a passionate gardener. I would like to thank NetGalley for the eARC for my honest review.

To begin with, history and art are draws to me. High interest! But I have to say that I could get lost in the pictures—the happy place of all happy places! And I took away a little inspiration of my own to try to capture small pieces of that “heaven” in my own back yard.

When words and photography and passion come together, you may grow a garden like this one - and a book as beautiful as it is instructive.

The photography captured my eyes first. Then came the chapters on how and why the garden exists, its borders and specialty areas - and the seasons as they progress through the plantings and backdrop of Wave Hill.

The book is descriptive, with a manual of gardening basics on every page. I delighted in it. And though my garden is now tropical, I loved the beds and borders and intentionality - and the wildness that nature insists on.

Well worth a space on your gardening bookshelf as well as on your coffee table for guests to ooh and aah over.

A truly lovely exploration of one particular public garden, as well as a broader exploration of what a public garden can be.

I had no idea a garden like this existed in New York, and wow, what a garden! This book will delight anyone with even a passing interest in gardening; the photos are just beautiful, the history is so interesting, and there is so much information on gardening, landscaping, and the different types of gardens found within Wave Hill, that pretty much everyone will find something to entertain them.

I have to confess that before reading this book I had no idea such a beautiful garden existed in the Bronx.
The book is fantastic and with beautiful photography and very helpful information on the plants used to design this stunning garden.

This is a book that is mostly composed of pictures of a garden. There are wonderful shots of flowers, grasses, the garden layout, etc. The unique thing is that this garden is a public one in the Bronx, which you wouldn't expect! Is it the most beautiful garden? No, but it is a necessary garden, and a great example of how urban spaces can be reclaimed for nature and humans to enjoy.

A Gardening Book to Keep Close By

"Nature into Art: The Gardens of Wave Hill", written by the professionally trained gardener and blogger Thomas Christopher, is not to my thinking a "how-to-do-it" book but rather a "how-to-dream-it" book. This is a large, photographic-heavy book, perhaps more at home on the coffee table than on a desk or next to a drawing board.

The book does allow a whirlwind tour from the comfortableness of a favorite chair of this 28-acre public gardens which was formerly an estate, in the Bronx, New York City. Christopher states in his blog that the book "is a tour of the lessons to be learned from that great public garden." However, this is the sort of book which I like to keep close with other books of this sort where I do most of my work.

This book is a mine of garden ideas, but it may also be an anecdote to a dreary day. The trick for designers or undaunted amateur gardeners in using this stimulating book as idea starters is condensing them into proportion for the 21st century residential or commercial garden.

The gardens are planned for the slopes overlooking the Hudson River and have views across the river to the New Jersey Palisades. They are exquisitely planned and well crafted. The book may easily engage readers who want tips on how certain aspects of the garden are put into practice.

These gardens in the Hudson Hill section of Riverdale are easily accessible to visitors who want to leave books for a while and step into the real experience. Gardening visitors should plan on spending a day, preferably by themselves, with a camera, sketchbook, or notebook to that will make the transition easier when returning to garden plans and this book.
