Description

An inspiring guide to creating stylish and livable outdoor spaces

An outdoor room is an extension of the home—a space that can used for entertaining, relaxing, cooking, playing, swimming, and more. In spaces large and small, outdoor rooms offer a retreat from daily life and a connection to nature. In Inside Outside, Linda O’Keeffe—former creative director of Metropolitan Home—will inspire you to create an outdoor living space that offers an oasis of comfort and style. O’Keeffe uses the language of interior design to inform her approach to exterior design, focusing on space, structure, movement, mood, and furniture.

Inside Outside is filled with private gardens from North America and Europe that are inspiring and illustrative examples. From dramatic topiaries and black tulips in Massachusetts to the living wall in the courtyard of a Paris penthouse, fresh ideas permeate both the gardens found within this book and the design thinking behind them.

What a stunning book. Full page photographs of dreamy, big-scale, aspirational gardens.
Just as interior designers plan the details, textures and contrasts of rooms, so garden designers do, too. This collection shows examples of styles which
I picked this up for a browse, and found myself absorbed in the introduction. Not just a love of gardens is described here, but a love of life - a love of resting, watching, socialising, eating, of privacy and of openness. A love of the scents, colours and changes that an 'outdoor room' brings.
I came for the photos, stayed for the text, and found inspiration that will make me refer to this again and again.

This landscaping picture book includes a lot of practical suggests as it explores structure and beauty through text and pictures.

There are enough photos to inspire you and enough white space for notes - I recommend circling what catches your eye and making it a workbook, beyond the coffee table.

Recommended.

Beautifully presented and photographed book of very large, very green garden, mainly in American and some in England. This is a great coffee table book to picked up and gain inspiration from for your garden - the gardens are amazing, as are the interiors of some of the houses as they flow into the outdoor space.

Bursting with beautiful and inspiring gardens, Linda O’Keeffe’s Inside Outside easily delivers on it’s promise on being a sourcebook. Highlighting the way the garden mirrors the design put into interior design, each garden featured speaks to a particular element within an overarching concept such as symmetry within space.

Depending on your own taste, each of the gardens will appeal more or less but each has it’s purpose and I found the accompanying text insightful and informative. Most of the designs are far too elaborate to be implemented in my own garden. This didn’t detract from my enjoyment of the book as the principles most certainly can be applied!

If you are looking to understand better the structure behind gorgeous gardens and be inspired by the innovations of other gardeners, this book is for you! It’s a five out of five on the en-JOY-meant scale!
