I have no experience of rock painting so I came to this book as a complete novice but I needn't have worried because it really does guide you through every stage of the process from having the correct tools and materials to selecting and preparing your rocks before looking at a wide variety of techniques and different designs to try. This book is an utter delight. The photography is bold, fun, engaging and beautiful. It is a truly fabulous book for all abilities and all ages.

I've seen rock painting become increasingly popular over the years, especially where my brother lives. There's a tradition of finding and hiding painted stones.
This book helps to take this quirky hide and seek to the professional level. With details on what's needed, to techniques that can be used. There's even tips on how to weatherproof your creation. This just might be the book I get my brother for Christmas x

A nice book for getting started in rock painting. It covers a little of everything including where to get rocks, what types of supplies work best, There are more than a few projects here. The best part is that for those who are more crafty than they are artsy, you won’t be too overwhelmed as there templates for the projects, so you could trace the basic outlines and then just paint them yourselves without worrying about whether or not you can draw them. They thought of everything for this book.

Fantastic little book! East to follow instructions - I will definitely be creating several of these projects!

Thanks to NetGalley and publishers for the advanced reader’s copy in exchange for my honest review.

The Little Book of Rock Painting is a new tutorial guide to designing and creating art on stone surfaces. Expected release date 30th April 2019 from Quarto on their Walter Foster imprint. It's 128 pages and available in paperback format.

This is a really well photographed book and the tutorials are clearly written and illustrated. I am by no means an accomplished artist and the instructions were well within my confidence level as a beginning 'doodler'. The resulting projects are attractive (see cover). The mandala and petroglyph paintings were especially appealing to me.

There's an introduction with materials and how-to's as well as a short section on sourcing and choosing rocks for projects. The author covers preparation and several different prepping methods for making a good and durable base for painting. There's a good chapter section on different paints, inks, and other media as well as tips for different shading and surface effects.

The intro is followed by large tutorial chapters roughly grouped by theme: patterns (mandalas and petroglyphs), animals (including a ton of beautiful stylized owls which I will be doing), and monochrome designs which remind me a lot of 'tribal' tattoos which are very popular.

The book does include templates for the projects as well as some inspiration photos and a short author bio.

There is no resource/link list or index. Neither of these detracts from the value of the material in my opinion, since a simple Google search can give you links and the table of contents is very detailed (and it's a short book).

Five stars. This would make a lovely weekend family project or a really cool 'tie-in' hobby for gardeners, rockhounds, collectors, etc.

This is a great book to gather inspiration for rock painting. I gained so much knowledge from cleaning the rocks to ideas for painting he rocks. It is a very resource for new to more advanced painters.

This book is delightful and fun to look at and get ideas and techniques from. I likely could do quite a few projects except maybe for the last couple with animals. I think a certain degree of skill and foreknowledge is required with that one. I have painted wooden peg dolls of my family and I did pick up some pointers in this book on technique, but I am not so sure a beginning artist would be able to do it. The rest of the designs, probably. I would say if you haven’t done a paint project like this to stick with the front of the book.

I have several creative friends in my life, and as an excuse to gather us together, I scheduled a rock painting night. Had I ever done so before? Nope. But it seemed a perfect activity to relax us while we socialized and decompressed at what is a busy time of year for all of us.

I was searching websites for advice, and only after I'd picked up some rocks and some oil-based paint pens did I stumble upon The Little Book of Rock Painting. I couldn't resist looking into this title to learn about basics of rock painting. This book focuses more on using acrylic paints, but as I already had paint pens on hand, I was most interested in the delightful tutorials that were offered.

I am in awe of what this book allowed me to create. I was intimidated at the skill level of some of the projects, but I boldly jumped in and, due to the clear instructions and pictures, I was able to follow along and end up with beautiful rock art.

At my blog I share a photo of my creations. I heartily recommend this book to offer basics on how to begin, but especially for the quality of the instructions, tutorials, and templates. I enjoy creative ventures but don't feel that I have innate drawing ability; however, this book taught me how to make it look like I am more skilled than I am! The spectrum of complexity is also welcome - I suspect my eight-year-old daughter, who is adept at art, could tackle the more detailed projects, whereas my five-year-old daughter would stick with some of the more basic ideas.

(I received a digital ARC from Quarto Publishing Group via NetGalley in exchange for my honest review.)

I have been interested in rock painting for awhile, but was never sure on how to commence this new hobby, This book has some wonderful instruction and information, as well as some fun designs. A great book to start your rock painting journey, great for a beginner and someone with some experience alike.
Something to liven up the larger pebbles in the garden by adding a painted stone or two amongst the plain ones.
Great start

by F. Sehnaz Bac, Marisa Redondo, Margaret Vance is a book I requested from NetGalley and the review is voluntary.
This gorgeous book starts out showing the reader what tools they will need, techniques to use, how to collect the right rocks and prep them, and it even has templates of art used in book in the back! It is filled with different styles of art work and how to put it on your rock. Lots and lots of photos! Great for beginners or intermediate artists!

The Little Book of Rock Painting
More than 50 tips and techniques for learning to paint colorful designs and patterns on rocks and stones
by F. Sehnaz Bac, Marisa Redondo, Margaret Vance

Having done a bit of rock painting at summer camp I long ago I thought this book might be interesting to look through for ideas and perhaps purchase as a gift in the future. I can see it used by art teachers, camp craft counselors and those looking for a new craft to pursue.

The book begins with an introduction that includes tools to use, what rocks to use, tips and tricks then moves on to colorful patterns, animals, monochrome designs and provides templates for those who would like to try what is shown in the book.

The examples included many with strips and dots that filled in patterns or created patterns. I found one idea intriguing of a rock painted like Noah’s Ark with animals to put up next to the ark that are painted like animals. With the ideas in this book I can see those with ideas of their own using some of the techniques to create a plethora of wonderful stone paintings.

Thank you to NetGalley and Quarto Publishing Group – Walter Foster for the ARC – This is my honest review.

4 Stars

In my humble opinion, Quarto - Walter Foster publishes the best how-to books for arts and crafts out there. Having read at least ten now, I have never been disappointed, and The Little Book of Rock Painting is a fine example of the quality I have come to expect from them.

The book is visually beautiful and covers everything you need to know to complete several impressive projects. From how to choose and prepare the rocks, to what types of paints/pens to use, step-by-step instructions for each project (including templates of the designs and photographs of each step), and how to protect your finished effort, you will no doubt be eager to get started!

Many thanks to NetGalley and Walter Foster for allowing me to read an e-copy of this book in exchange for an unbiased review. All opinions stated are my own.

Amazing designs and step by step guides to how to do them. Making the most beautiful and detailed rocks look possible by anyone (going to follow them and see!). Good guide to types of tools, paints..etc needed to get started. A great guide for anyone wanting to try the rock painting and hiding trend.

Great book for those who want to bring different things into your art - nature.rocks. Does give a few templates for some designs. Gives some simple and some detailed designs to paint onto rocks. does show images with the steps on how to paint the images. Really nice ideas from the artists who put the book together.

Good materials resource and some cool projects/guides...I am admittedly starting to be a little burnt out on painted rock books, though. The market is definitely becoming saturated.

Delicate and stunning results, this book offers over 50 techniques on how to create professional results. My favorite one is the endless Mandala.

Great range of different styles and techniques. I found the level of detail more than sufficient, but those without any prior crafting experience might need more guidance on some of the specific techniques. The inclusion of templates and practice pages is a nice touch, although not really functional in ebook format, which is what I reviewed.

If you are looking for great beginner instructions on rock painting this is a good one. It looks like a great family activity for summer, the book has instructions for very simple (lines and patterns) to a gorgeously detailed noah’s Arc set.

It covers how to select, and prepare your rocks for optimal painting which is great, some steps I never would have considered and might have disappointed me in my final results. The book also covers materials, step by step on some of the more intricate designs. In the back there are templates for a few of the designs to trace and use for your projects.

I didn’t have the materials listed, but the tips in the book led me to experiment with what I had. The picture is of my first creation, I used landscaping pebble (too small really, but already in my yard), some watercolors, a sharpie paint pen and gel pens. Note, this is not the right paint, but I am pretty pleased with the results anyway.

Thanks to the publisher and netgalley for the digital advanced review copy!

Painting rocks allows me to decorate and destress at the same time. Once you start, you will never look at rocks the same way. The authors of this book have given us many helpful tips and some beautiful examples to follow. We spent an afternoon "hunting" then painting rocks and built some beautiful memories. 5 stars seems too little for this book, but there you are.

This is a fun book to guide you in all the steps needed to be a successful rock artist. I feel like it would be best for adults or talented older children, rather than elementary students. The designs are cute and intricate.

Great book about rock painting and wonderful with instructions too! My 5 year old wanted me to give him other ideas on how to paint rocks. He really liked the templates of art in the back. Two thumbs up!

I received a copy of The Little Book of Rock Painting by F. Sehnaz Bac, Marisa Redondo and Margaret Vance from NetGalley in exchange for an honest review. I’ve always wanted to try rock painting having seen so many beautiful examples on Pinterest, but never knew how to go about it. When I spotted this book on NetGalley I jumped at the chance to read and review it. The Little Book of Rock Painting was published by Walter Forest Publishing in April in ebook and paperback.

This is a fantastic little book for all budding rock painters! The book is beautifully presented, it has clear instructions and is richly illustrated. It’s split into five different sections: getting started, colourful patterns, animals, monochrome designs and project templates. There is also a page at the end about the artists. In the first section (getting started) the authors explain what sorts of tools and materials are needed, how to source stones for painting, how to prepare the surfaces of the stones prior to painting, tips on different painting techniques, and importantly how to protect your stone from damage once it’s finished.

There are some pages with practise spaces so your can try out your techniques and then the project pages begin. There are several different projects in each of the sections, “colourful designs” has projects including sunset, mandalas, lines and dots, garden inspired, hearts, petroglyph Each project takes you step-by-step through how to prepare the surface and apply the design. I particularly liked how detailed and clear the instructions were, especially as mandalas are quite intricate and it can be easy to see afterwards if the design went wrong. Each step is clearly explained and accompanied by a colour photograph which makes it so easy to follow. There are also practise pages, so you can have a go at the trickier parts before you paint them on your stone. The final section contains templates for some of the projects in the book.

The suggested projects represent a range of styles and techniques, so they will cater to a wide variety of tastes. I found that there were quite a few I really want to try, as well as providing me with inspiration for my own original ideas. There are also suggestions for what the stones in each project section could be used for and some beautiful illustrations of finished projects together.

If you’ve never tried rock painting and would like to, or you’re an established rock painter seeking inspiration then this book is for you! It’s packed with stunning project ideas and all the tips and knowledge you need. Highly recommended!

This is such a great little book! I would never have looked for a book on this subject but the cover caught my eye and I'm glad it did. This is a great activity that can be done with little cost, especially if you combine it with a trip to the seashore. It covers everything from different ways of decorating, what you need and some design inspiration. The mandala designs are stunning and while I'm not convinced my artistic skills will get me that far they are inspiring. This book will definitely be getting used during the school summer holidays this year.

Delightful book, full of beautiful photographs and illustrations. The projects are excellent and clear step by step instructions are given throughout. Suitable for all levels including a complete beginner. It is a craft that is accessible to everyone. The book does a brilliant job of inspiring you to rush out and find your own rocks and pebbles and give it go.

This book is so fun and so accessible! Painting rocks for decorating, gardening, or kindness rocks has become very popular. This book gives you so much advice about what materials you'll need, how to create or find designs, and how to execute. I work in a public library and people can't get enough rock painting! This will be very helpful in instructing patrons and running library programs, as well as supplementing the library's collection. I would highly recommend this book to librarians, parents, and hobbyists.

Thank you NetGalley for my complimentary copy in return for my honest review.

This book is awesome. I love to paint and painting rocks is all the rage at the moment. This book is filled with tips, tricks, and step by step instruction for creating beautiful painted rocks. It also has templates at the back of the book and practice pages after each section. The book is more of geometric designs and dots but the pictures look stunning. The book is filled with step by step brightly colored photos as well as the instructions. This really is a great book if you are interested in learning to paint rocks or really anything for that matter, just because it is a rock painting book does not mean the designs can only be painted on rocks. It's also a great book to give you fresh ideas to paint.

I received this book from the Author or Publisher via Netgalley.com and chose to leave this review.
