Description

Sometimes, a girl’s gotta do what a girl’s gotta do….

It’s the sixties, but London isn’t swinging for our girl Edith, whose life seems to offer so little hope. Trapped in a home full of anger and hate, with a father determined to destroy her, she is desperate to escape. So, when her gay cousin, Ronnie, comes to her rescue she seizes the opportunity and life, it seems, will never be the same again. Ronnie’s single-minded determination to transform her introduces her to a whole new unconventional world, full of quirky characters and new ideas that, for Edith, finally get the sixties swinging.

Free of her abusive father and her weak, defenseless mother, the changes are swift and dramatic as Edith’s coming of age becomes an adventure-filled, roller-coaster ride until her father comes back to haunt her and threatens to ruin everything. Where will it take her and how will it end? Who will win and who will lose? And just what does a girl ‘gotta’ do when a girl’s just ‘gotta’ do it, as she chooses between love and money?

This ‘Can’t Buy Me Love’ SPECIAL EDITION offers the first two of six volumes in the ‘The Cost of Loving’ Series. A well written and engrossing book told as a memoir.
This is how I imagine the 60s were and I liked the style of writing and the characters.
I'd like to read other work by this author.
Recommended!

This book was a fun read with emotions that lingered with me long after I finished the book. The author did a great job of aging the characters well, but keeping them youthful in their hopes and dreams — and love.

It’s true, as the Beatles sang, you can’t buy love. But you can find a way to cherish love.

I totally requested Can't Buy Me Love because of the cover, but then I read the synopsis and I was hooked!

This is the first book in a six book series. In this installment, we get to see the main character Edith leave her parents and become e thriving, fun, adventures person. I am really looking forward to reading the other books and watching Edith grow through the next three decades!

The writing in Can't Buy Me Love was really good. I loved how the story and plot flowed. Again, I can't wait to read the next book in the series!

Who wouldn't love this book!? The characters make you feel you are part of their lives, you experience their highs and lows just as you would in your own lives with the hope that the ending would turn out well for them, after all a fairy tale always does doesn't it? Set in the swinging sixties in London this is a fabulous book, humorous, poignant and a true reflection of modern life. A great read - highly recommended.
