Description

Wild, Wild Rake, the next sweeping, emotional, witty, and sharp romance in the Cavensham Heiresses series from beloved author Janna MacGregor.

Her first marriage was an epic fail.

Lady Avalon Warwyk never did love her husband. Arrogant, selfish, and cruel, it’s a blessing when she’s widowed and left to raise her son all by herself. Finally, Avalon can live freely and do the work she loves: helping fallen women become businesswomen. She’s lived these past ten years with no desire to remarry—that is, until Mr. Devan Farris comes to town.

Can he convince her to take another chance at happily ever after?

Devan Farris—charming vicar, reputed rake, and the brother of Avalon’s son’s guardian—is reluctantly sent to town to keep tabs on Avalon and her son. Devan wishes he didn’t have to meddle in her affairs; he’s not one to trod on a woman’s independent nature and keen sense of convictions. But she’ll have nothing to do with a vicar with a wild reputation—even though he’s never given his heart and body to another. If only he could find a way to show Avalon who he really is on the inside—a good, true soul looking for its other half. But how can prove that he wants to love and care for her. . .until death do they part?

I have become a huge fan of Janna MacGregor over the last couple of years. She writes some of the most romantic, sensual and sweet romance around! Wild, Wild Rake doesn't disappoint. Its a charming and emotional story. Devan and Avalon have appeared in other books...but this book is all theirs! We find out the truth of Avalon's first marriage. What turned her into Lady Warlock, as Devan likes to call her. We learn why he cultivates the title of rake.
Devan becomes the Parish Vicar when his brother Lord Larkton sends him to spy on Avalon. He's suspicious of where she's getting the money to support the charity she has formed to house former prostitutes and their children. The last thing he wants to do is get involved in the business of this prickly woman. But as he gets to know her he sees her for the caring and loving woman that she is. Avalon thinks Devan is a flirt and a rake of the worst kind, that he only cares about himself and having fun. She's hurt that all those years ago he nicknamed her Lady Warlock. She likes her life now and objects to having him in her life. But the chemistry between them grows as they get to know each other better. And believe me the chemistry is HOT! Wild, Wild Rake is a delightful regency romance that's not to be missed!

Wild, Wild Rake is the story of a beautiful, kind marchioness who is neglect and constantly berated by her husband. She wasn’t his choice, and neither was he gets. Her parents concocted the match and she’s been paying ever since. The marquess is gone to his reward now, but he still haunts her as he named one of friends, an Earl, as their son’s guardian. The marchoniess has tried to move on, creating a robust community of misfits and other forgotten individuals in a parish she treasures. Then enters Vicar Devan Farris, brother to the Earl. He’s been sent to spy on the marchioness and get her son ready to head off to Eton. It’s a tangle, complicated by the fact that Devon and Avalon think they know exactly who the other person is, though they couldn’t be more wrong. Before the tale is done, there are three proposals, one marriage, one scandal and a dead peer. It’s worth a read, for sure.

I voluntarily read and reviewed an advanced copy of this book. All thoughts and opinions are my own.

Wild, Wild Rake is Jana MacGregor’s sixth installment in her Cavensham Heiresses series and I believe it is the best. Avalon Warwyk is a woman who has faced many difficulties in her life, from her parents who sold her into marriage to the husband who treated her with utter contempt. She has worked hard to build a wall around her heart, but she has allowed the women she has saved from a bad life into her heart as well as her beautiful young son. Devan Farris has known Avalon for a while and he never formed a good opinion of her until he was sent by his brother and his bishop to check up on Avalon’s son. Devan begins to see the true Avalon and the more he sees the more he loves. This is a heartfelt love story with many twists and turn that will keep the reader engaged until the very end. . I was given an advanced copy of this book, and all of the opinions expressed in this review are my own.

“I will always…always be with you through the brightest days and the darkest hours.”

Lady Avalon Warwyck has taken the lemons life has tossed at her and made lemonade. Set aside and banished to Warwyck Hall by her husband, Lady Avalon has done everything in her power to transform the lives of those misfortunate. After the untimely death of her husband, Avalon becomes a widow that refuses to answer to any man. So, when her son’s guardian sends his brother, a vicar, to spy on her charitable activities, she is beyond incensed, and determined to get ride of him…if only he didn’t look like a fallen angel sent to lead her astray…

Devan Farris is the fourth son of an Earl and as such led to a life in the church. Over time he has garnered the title of a vicar with a wild rakish reputation. His brother sends him to the parish at Warwyck Hall to oversee how Lady Warwyck has been handling the estate’s funds over the past 10 years, as well as seeing to the proper schooling of her son. It had been years since Devan had seen his “Lady Warlock”, and nothing could have prepared him for the whirlwind that he encounters…. especially when she manages to steal his virgin heart…

Avalon and Devan start their unholy alliance as frenemies that climaxes towards a heartwarming happily ever after. If they can manage to gain each other’s trust and get over the misconstrued perceptions of their character, it will be so worth all the heartache that brought them together… “I’ve waited my whole life for you. I promise, starting right this minute and all the others that follow, I’ll do everything in my power to protect you and make you happy.”

*Stands up and cheers* Oh, how I’ve been awaiting Devan’s story! Get ready to meet your next book boyfriend in the talented Mr. Farris! *Swoon* Dear Reader, this was an up past my bedtime page turner that I did not want to end! I’m over the moon in luv with Devan! Highly recommend!
5+++ stars!

Sweet and Sensual Historical
Janna MacGregor's 'Wild, Wild Rake is a feast for the senses. She gives us an innocent woman, forced into an unwanted marriage to a man who wanted it even less than she did. She would have tried, but he had no interest in simply even being kind. He tossed her out of his townhouse, leaving her to raise his heir in the country. Mary, his mistress, and his son by her, lived with him in the townhouse.
Avalon Warwyck raised her son in the small village of Thistledown and was loved by the local community. She created a haven for a few soiled doves as a favor to one who had saved her from harm...and planned to do much more.
Interference by her son's guardian brought a new vicar to town. The new vicar, Mr Devan Farris didn't like Avalon, but he didn't know her. He only knew what he thought was the truth...and was ill informed. Becoming acquainted with the real Avalon sets him back on his heels.
This romance has humor, intrigue, angst, strong family and good people. The characters are multilevel and interesting. I recommend it for historical romance fans.
I requested and received a NetGalley ARC to peruse and offer my own opinion.

Wild, Wild Rake
The Cavensham Heiresses #6
Janna MacGregor
⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

Lady Avalon Warwyck never really loved her husband and he was not her choice at all. Her parents made her marry him. He’s arrogant, selfish, cruel, and it’s nothing short of a blessing when she is widowed and left to raise her son Thane all by herself. She can finally live freely and do the work that she loves to do which is helping women become businesswomen that would not normally have that chance in life. She has lived her life in peace with no desire to marry for the last ten years until Mr. Devan Farris comes to town.

Devan Farris is a charming vicar, reputed rake, and the brother of Avalon’s son’s guardian. He has been sent to town to keep tabs on Avalon and her son, something he seems reluctant to do. He wishes he didn’t have to meddle in her affairs; he doesn’t like to interfere with a woman’s independence. But she seems to want nothing to do with a vicar with a wild reputation even though he has never given his heart or body to another. All he wants is to find a way to show Avalon who he really is on the inside. He wants to show her that he is a good soul who is just looking for his other half to complete him. But how can he prove this to her. How can he prove that he wants her like he has never wanted another soul before? That he will love her until death do them part.

Janna MacGregor brings us a lovely tale of love that comes to two deserving people. These two main characters were just meant to be together. They have been through so much. Avalon had such a cold mean husband who seemed to delight in tormenting her. He hurt her in public in front of their peers and the ton without batting an eyelash. She in turn took it and held her head high even though it was killing her inside. Devan also comes from a well to do family, but as he is not the oldest he has become a vicar and his brother pushes him around and tells him what he will do and to what parish he will go. He goes because that is his only means of making money. So now he finds himself in love with Avalon and will do anything to win her love. This is where the story becomes sweet and you can only hope that Avalon will give him a chance. This is what makes the perfect enjoyable story in my book and I give this book a big thumbs up. Ms. MacGreggor you did a wonderful job and I really enjoyed this book.

Oh what a wonderful heart jerking read. This two have everything fighting them but a determined man and a forgiving woman finally make this work. A wonderful love story about two hearts that had given up on finding true love. Very enjoyable.

I have read all the previous books in this series and fell in love with the Cavensham family from the start. This is the last book I believe and I am super sad about it! Im not ready to say goodbye these characters! Avalon and Devan have spent so much of their past hating each other that when fate throws them together and they realize how much in common they have... well... they cant seem to remember why they didn't like each other to begin with! I loved reading this one! Not everyone is as they seem, or what the gossip rags claims they are. Can they trust themselves and each other to find a happy ending?

This is a wonderful historical romance between a tragic widow and a innocent vicar. Avalon was in a cruel marriage when her husband died, leaving her alone with their son. As a marchioness, she finds her calling in helping young women in unfortunate circumstances. Devon is an innocent vicar sent to spy on her.

I loved how the sparks flew when Avalon and Devon were thrown together. They had a sweet romance develop, with neither knowing what to do or how to interact with the other. Additionally, the sub-plots were interesting and added depth to the story.

If you are a fan of the genre, you will love this book. Historical romance is not one of my favorite genres, however, the author is so talented that I have her on my must read authors' list. Her words seem to come alive on the page in a way that makes me feel like I am a part of the story rather than just words on a page.

Another great book!!! I love anything Janna MacGregor writes! She never disappoints me. Her storytelling astounds me!! Can't wait for her next book!!

I enjoyed these characters very much! Both Avalon and Devan are beneficiaries of gossip and misinformation. Avalon has the reputation of a heartbreaker who married for title and money. That suits her widowhood as she never wants to risk her heart again to a man. Devan is a fourth son who wanted to go into the military but was steered to the Church instead. To his credit he is a caring minister who loves to flirt when he is not ministering. He relishes the exaggerated and flat-out invented stories of his wild rakish ways. His reputation and his declaration that only an heiress will do for a wife enables him to hold out for a marriage based on love like his parents had. This story is the sweet "rake" and the caring "ice queen" discarding their reputations to connect as themselves.

What a delightful book!! I really enjoyed the main male character to be different from the usual hero. I have always enjoyed this author's books!!

Lady Avalon was secretly relieved when her cruel husband died nine years ago, not long after the birth of their son. Since then, she’s spent her time and funds helping women in need. When the new vicar in town turns out to be Devan Ferris, brother of her son’s guardian and notorious rake, she wants nothing to do with him. But when Devan’s kindness and generosity don’t match his reputation, Avalon isn’t sure what to think. Plus he’s inconveniently handsome. And he seems to like her, with his gentle teasing and smoldering looks. Too bad she’s vowed never to marry again.

This was a mostly charming entry in MacGregor’s series. I found the main characters’ chemistry quite swoony, and they had a genuine rapport that made me want to be friends with both of them. Avalon’s son is a delight, too. Some of the secondary characters were a bit irritating, but eventually we find out why. A fun read!

What a wonderful romance. I’m in love again. I was gifted this book and I’m so glad I was able to read it. I am not going to re-write the book. The author has done a fabulous job. I am going to tell you about the emotions emotions that I want you to read this book. We have villains. And we have heroes. We have strong characters. We have a woman who is so horribly treated. We are the hero who is allowed people to believe he had a tattered reputation. We’re finally together. However the past has made them Especially the woman afraid to trust. Even when they get together she still afraid. There are other victims in the book. Thank goodness this is a Bromance with a happy ending. You don’t want to miss the ending

This is by far the most romantic book in the Cavensham series. The deep love and affection that develops between Avalon and Devan was a joy to read. The words and phrases they use to express their feelings are exquisitely beautiful.

Years ago Avalon Warwyk abruptly jilted William Cavensham. Devan Farris, close friend of William’s, has been assigned as the vicar in Avalon’s village and to keep tabs on her since his brother is Avalon’s son’s guardian. The guardian thinks her recent spending is questionable and wants Devan to investigate.

Avalon and Devan were mentioned in the previous book, Rogue Most Wanted. I didn’t take much notice of them, then Janna MacGregor makes them main characters and through her writing creates these multidimensional characters I begin to care about. She did the same thing with Paul, Duke of Southart, in The Good, the Bad, and the Duke. Took someone I didn’t like and made him very likable.

Lush, romantic stories with intelligent heroines and dashing heroes -- just what you expect from Janna MacGregor.

Thank you NetGalley and St. Martin’s Press for the ARC

As aside. I had the pleasure of meeting Janna MacGregor at RWA NYC 2019 this past July. At a St. Martin’s Press event, she was so kind and generous with her time. As always, I look forward to her next book.

Wild,Wild Rake is book 6 in the Cavensham Heiresses series by Janna MacGregor. I have to say I adored the characters in this book. Vicar Devan Farris is a wonderfully delicious hero. It is rare to find a romance that portrays a man of integrity and honor. Devan is all that and more. But his romance has anything but an easy start. In fact, this is more of an enemies to lovers trope. I struggled at first with Devan’s teasing manner towards the heroine- Avalon Warwyk. But as the story progressed, I began to see his caring nature. Devan has portrayed himself as a selfish rake. But he has a secret that proves him otherwise. Will Avalon believe him when she discovers the truth or will she forever see him as a lying rake? Bravo Ms MacGregor! I thought this story had an emotional depth that pulled me into its waves and threatened to drown me in its’ steamy scenes. I was given a copy of the book.

I loved the depth of Avalon, to others she just seemed cold, but it was her way of protecting herself. She cares so deeply and wants the best for those around her. Devon’s loyal and cares deeply for the people in his parish and his family. The chemistry between them was immediate. I loved the care given to their relationship, and how Devon was so understanding about Avalon’s first marriage and the till it had taken on her. I really enjoyed this book.

Wild, Wild Rake is a phenomenal historical romance by Janna MacGregor. Ms. MacGregor has provided readers with a well-written book and filled it with a spectacular cast of characters. The Marquess of Warwyk was forced into marriage and hated his wife, not for anything she did, but it didn't stop him from beating her down with lies to anyone that would listen. Avalon is sent to live in a village with her son and has raised him without a father. She's not heartbroken when she becomes a widow. Devan was there to witness one of Avalon's worst moments and had coined the name Lady Warlock for her. Devan and Avalon's story is packed with drama, humor, angst, sizzle, action and suspense. I loved this 6 star book from cover to cover and look forward to my next book by Janna MacGregor. Wild, Wild Rake is book 6 of The Cavensham Heiresses but can be read as a standalone. This is a complete book, not a cliff-hanger.

I voluntarily read and reviewed an advanced copy of this book that I received from NetGalley. All thoughts and opinions are my own.

This is the first book that I've read by Ms. MacGregor and I was not disappointed.
Lady Avalon, having been forced into marriage with a Lord that was in love with someone else and also forced by her parents. This caused resentment and made for a very unhappy marriage.
Now a widow, Avalon creates a haven for ex-prostitutes while raising her young son. This is how Devan finds her, after being assigned as Vicar for her lands and tasked with spying for his brother, who is the guardian of her young son. Having a negative history with Gavin, Avalon is not happy to have him there.
Through many negative confrontations Avalon and Devan fight their attraction to each other.
I highly recommend this story and look forward to reading more of Janna's books.
Thank you Janna MacGregor, St. Martin's Press and NetGalley for allowing me this advance copy in exchange for my honest review.

Kindly provided with an ARC via Netgalley in exchange for an honest review....

I truly went i to this read with an open mind and I absolutely loved every minute of it !!!
This was Avalon and Devan's tale. Life really is not being good to Avalon, yet right from the out stead despite the crappy hand she is dealt she shows amazing resilience and kindness. She eventually gets the opportunity to change her circumstances and boy does she take control from there !!

Enter Devan.....at first I was not a fan, he for me was the same ilk as Avalon's looser hubby. But wow I judged him wrong. I adored how Janna brought these two unlikely characters together and created a love of the ages.

Quite the steamy read and Avaoln very much for a lady of her times is quite the rebel with a heart !!!.

It's a MUST read for lovers of not only great historical dramas but of swoon worthy romances !!

5 "what a tangled web we weave with our hearts" Stars from me x

Many thanks Janna and Netgalley. Top Read

Later peeps xxx

This is book 6 in Janna MacGregors Cavensham heiresses series. I have waited for this one and it did not disappoint. Lady Avalon Warwyk is a widowed young woman raising her son in the Warwyk country estate. Having weathered her marriage to a cruel, selfish man, his untimely death was a relief to her. It meant freedom to do raise her son and be content with her work. Enter Devan Farris, brother to her sons guardian, sent to spy on Avalon as the new Vicar, a breathtaking Vicar at that. For years they have harbored animosity to one another for mistaken or misunderstood reasons. As they begin to know each other, their feelings and trust grow. This a wonderful story of learning to trust and opening your heart to love again. The characters were alive in my mind and very well developed. I loved Avalon’s kindness and spunk. And, Devan...what’s not to love about a hunky, caring, and kind Vicar! I can’t wait to see what Ms. MacGregor has for us next. This delicious romance had me captivated from page 1 to the last. I received this copy from NetGalley and the publisher and am voluntarily reviewing. Five glorious stars.

Oh this one just sizzles! I was slow to like the main characters. Avalon has been mistreated by those that should have loved her the most. The vicar has a wicked sense of humor that bites. But both characters are hiding their true selves. But has they show their hidden side they become people we cheer for. Both of them have so much to give to the world. And they just sizzle when around each other. Be sure to read this one! It is a delight.

This is my first in this series but stood alone nicely. Having her parents arrange a marriage for her Avalon Warwyk suffered the worst kind of abuse from a husband that fronted his mistress under her nose. After his death Avalon spends her time in good works and taking care of her son. Interesting setting and plot. "A copy of this book was provided by St. Martin's Press via Netgalley with no requirements for a review. Comments here are my honest opinion." Look forward to reading another in this series.
