Description

In a brutal and lonely world, how do you get the human connection that you NEED from the person that you CRAVE but cannot TRUST? A deceiver like you. As ruthless as you. The ENEMY.

On an alternative Earth called Terra, the empire of Basur calls the shots, and everybody falls into line. Almost everybody…

Kendra Veiss is a young woman, but one to be reckoned with. She is as complicated as her life has always been. After a difficult childhood and a turbulent coming of age, she has found purpose in the ranks of the DSS, the Basuri secret service.

Times are complicated too. The rebellious, belligerent Askar were crushed by the Basur in a vicious internecine war nearly a century ago. They have picked themselves up off the ground and are making trouble again. Trouble that comes knocking on Kendra’s door. For one night, the unprecedented, the unthinkable happens. Kendra is abducted for interrogation by Askari intelligence from the streets of the Basuri capital.

She should be dead. But Kendra walks out of an Askari black site without a scratch on her. A modern-day miracle, some might say. Not Kendra. She knows her guardian angels are all too human. One of them is Aran Reiner: six-foot-four-inches of arresting good looks and bad, bad news. He seemed determined to ensure her release. Now he is hanging around her like a hungry stray. What does Reiner want?

Kendra knows what she wants, and she wants it bad. But she knows better than to play with fire. He is untrustworthy, manipulative. Dangerous to herself and a crucial DSS asset she must protect at all costs. So, naturally, she resolves to stay away from him. But in the tumultuous world of espionage, things don’t always go according to plan.

In a brutal and lonely world, how do you get the human connection that you NEED from the person that you CRAVE but cannot TRUST? A deceiver like you. As ruthless as you. The ENEMY.

Advance Praise

"This steamy science fiction romance is equals parts sizzle and speculative, setting a dangerous liaison in the midst of a clever espionage tale from the near future. Author D. E. Knightley crafts the central pair of characters well, allowing readers a close narration to get to Kendra's inner thoughts, and those temptations which are building the more time she spends with Aran. This tension is matched by the political and social tensions of the DSS and their enemies, and the new wars that seem to be verging in the wider world. Here, the narration takes sharp turns with excellent action description, juxtaposed but complementary to the love scenes that are interspersed with them. Overall, Strategic Entanglements is a 'badly behaved' romp for those who want sharp action sequences and powerful romance in one well-formed package."

"This was a fast-paced and action-packed science fiction novel that shows great potential. I enjoyed how the story seemed to flow effortlessly, the narrative was exceptionally crafted and I loved how the characters had minds of their own ... I was invested in Kendra and Aran, I wanted to see more of them and where their story went. Their chemistry was very exciting, it was almost alive. I also enjoyed the flow of the story, the thrill, the mystery and how the author brought everything to life. The descriptions were perfect, the imagery was vivid and the dialogues were crisp. I cannot wait for the next novel in the series. Simply amazing. It really has the potential to become a long and popular series."

"D. E. Knightly has written an interesting and entertaining book... I have not seen many romantic science fiction books about, but it is a good combination This alternative world is well developed and the author made good use of the descriptions so that I could picture it clearly. The characters are well written and the dialogue is natural. The action kicks off fairly quickly and it kept me reading as I wanted to know what would happen next. It does have a kind of spy/ espionage feel to it and the characters were very believable. I would recommend it to sci-fi and romance fans. I also think it will appeal to thriller fans too."

"Strategic Entanglements blends the components of usual spy fiction with other elements that are a lot more original... They find their place next to the spy story, which is well developed with many turns of events. I like that Strategic Entanglements focuses both on Kendra's personal life and her work. The reader understands her, and her involvement with Reiner spices up the story. Even though other books hint at the attraction between enemies, the present novel explores it thoroughly and makes it one of the main themes. I consider this one of its strongest points."

this is the first in a series and normally i hate series that feature the same character (Only one series is the Exception) but this was a intriguing read.
An original story that kept me on the edge of my seat, a page-turner that you wont be able to put down. i can not wait to see what this author creates next. i will definitely reading the rest in this series. i think it could go a long way and please many different types of people.

I received a complimentary copy of Strategic Entanglements from NetGalley. Opinions expressed in this review are completely my own.

Set in a semi-dytopian future, this was a unique and interesting book. I believed the characters and was immersed in the storyline. I really enjoyed the suspense and tension build-up, which the author created. Some of the excitement that I was anticipating will be in the follow-up novel as it ended on a cliffhanger.

Thank you to NetGalley for the ARC.
