My Body, My Suffering: When She was Destroyed by Perfection is written by indie author Ama Desiree, and she aims to help you connect with the beauty that lies within you.

The author describes how beauty standards have changed over time, but what has been consistent is that the beauty industry is driven by the male gaze and objectification of women.

She identifies the "Perfect Monster," the unattainable dream woman that has been created by the beauty industry, and discusses the pressure on women to live up to this impossible standard.

Another archetype she describes is the Mr. Everyone, who is heavily influenced by current trends, and the Perfect Monster is his ideal mate.

The book also talks about the risks that women take trying to live up to unreasonable beauty standards, including plastic surgery.

The author then went on to say that "our souls are in desperate need of surgery because they are infected with this tumor called society."  I thought this was a very interesting way of conceptualizing it.

I liked that the author talked about the importance of taking care of your health as part of embracing your natural beauty.  Near the end of the book she addresses the reader as "my beauty queen," and says the book is her love letter to you.

What I liked most about the book was the author's obvious passion for the topic.  The more voices that are speaking up about women embracing ourselves just as we are, the better.
