Description

From bestselling mystery author David Rosenfelt comes a new series – a spinoff of the much beloved Andy Carpenter mysteries – about a dynamic new investigative team featuring a determined former cop and his loyal German Shepherd.

Corey Douglas and his K-9 partner, Simon Garfunkel, have recently retired from the police force. Not ready to give up the life yet, they come up with a proposal for fellow former cop, Laurie Carpenter, and her investigating partner, Marcus. Laurie and Marcus – who help out Laurie’s lawyer husband Andy on cases – have been chafing to jump back into investigating on their own, so they are in.

They call themselves the K Team, in honor of Simon. Their first job as private investigators comes to them from Judge Henry Henderson, who's known as a very tough but fair judge, and they've all come up against him in court at one time or another. Though it's hard to believe, Judge Henderson is being blackmailed and extorted, and he doesn't want to involve the police--he needs the K Team to figure out why.

As Andy Carpenter's number one fan I was immediately interested in meeting the K Team and I have to say that I am now a huge Corey Douglas fan as well. This new series continues with the same wry sense of humor that makes me love Andy, and it is also a big treat to reconnect with Laurie, Marcus and the rest of the gang. When Andy's nemesis, Judge "Hatchet" Henderson is being blackmailed with false evidence, he calls in the team and, as with all of David Rosenfelt's books, they manage to peel back all the layers of seemingly disparate occurrences until they whole pattern emerges. This is a wonderful book - once I started I could not put it down and stayed up until I had gotten to the end. I highly recommend it.

I love this new series by Rosenfelt. It contains all the humor of his Andy Carpenter series just with new characters. I have loved everything that he has written and I highly recommend his books

ex-cop, K-9, law-enforcement, murder, extortion, greed, snark-fest, friendship, assassins, private-investigators,*****,

It really doesn't matter if you've read any of the Andy Carpenter books, this stands alone as a winner! Corey Douglas and his K-9 partner, Simon Garfunkel, have recently retired from the police force only to join up with a former colleague, the ex-cop wife of early retired lawyer Andy Carpenter. Together they and some other consultants take on a case for a highly respected judge who is being blackmailed by an unknown entity for unknown purposes. The body count almost reaches the snark count, and the plot is devilishly twisty, full of misdirection and red herrings. LOVED IT! It's clear that this is the start of an active, fun series.

This book was received as an ARC from St. Martin's Press - Minotaur Books in exchange for an honest review. Opinions and thoughts expressed in this review are completely my own.

I am always a fan of dog stories and the impact they have on our lives. I am always on the lookout for more books on the K-9 unit and their impact for not only serving the community but for the bonds they form with their human companions just like Corey and Simon Garfunkle The K Team! Corey retires from the force and catches up with former cop and friend Laurie and her friend Marcus and they form The K Team! They are tasked to assist Laurie's husband Andy who is a lawyer with solving the case so he can defend his clients. Their first case involves judge Henderson involved with a blackmail case that could end his career. The K team is on it having worked with him before as police officers and the case takes a new turn that no one is prepared for and the job they once loved is in question. I could not stop being fascinated by the bond of Corey and Simon and how they stuck by eachother every step of the way. I know a lot of our readers will enjoy this book very much.

We will consider adding this title to our Adult Fiction collection at our library. That is why we give this book 5 stars.

The novel is advertised as a spinoff of the very popular Andy Carpenter stories. It is but not much changes. Andy's wife Laurie, a former policewoman, the very vocal Marcus and Corey Douglas a retired policeman form an investigatory company and decide to take on cases in order to make money. Corey was introduced in one of the latest Andy Carpenter books when he filed suit against the department he worked for demanding that they retire into his care the K9 that he had worked with. The lawsuit prevailed and the dog named Simon Garfunkel also becomes a member of the team. The group takes the name the K team thanks to Simon and their first job is to investigate a blackmail campaign against a judge with a reputation of being tough but fair. They must find out why he is being blackmailed, put a stop to it and get evidence against the blackmailers.
Corey is the only character that is not a regular in the Andy Carpenter series but takes Andy's place as the source of wisecracks for the group. Using some personnel from the regular Carpenter family as well as an appearance by Andy himself the writing is reminiscent of the story lines of the Carpenter series. For fans of those books the reward is that additional plots not necessarily revolving around court trials can be utilized and still maintain the delightful styling that the reader looks for in a David Rosenfelt book. A welcome addition to the author's long list of entertaining fiction and also keeping in the practice of featuring beloved dogs that move in and out of the stories. And of yes the ending is the satisfying one we are accustomed to.

Corey, an ex-cop with his K-9 partner, GSD Simon Garfunkel, has teamed with Laurie, Andy Carpenter's wife, and Marcus (also of Carpenter fame), along with occasional Super-Hacker Sam.

Corey is not your average vision of a tough guy--and he has woman issues. He knows there's bound to be a problem with Dani--he just hasn't found it yet. He is less sarcastic than Andy. Dani is a great support character and fits in beautifully with Laurie. And Marcus--you don't mess with Marcus. The Seal Team wouldn't mess with Marcus. Book 1 doesn't include Simon so much and I hope we'll see his as a slightly stronger role going forward.

There is going to be some time spent in "getting to know" the new guy and a bit of redux for Laurie and Marcus. Once past the preliminaries, the novel begins to gather speed and has the reader burning through the remaining chapters. The team's first client, a judge known as "Hatchet" has them looking into a possible blackmail/extortion attempt. The case quickly escalates. The well-plotted action becomes complex and it might help to possess some slight knowledge of the stock market. Even if you don't, this becomes a good primer.

While Corey doesn't have the biting wit of Andy Carpenter (and really, how could he?), it still moves at a fast pace, keeping the characters involved, dodging red herrings, kicking ass and taking names. Okay, maybe the former part is more Marcus' domain, while the taking names part is Corey's.

I was thrilled to receive this digital ARC from the publisher and NetGalley in exchange for a review. This is a great start to the new series and I'm already looking forward to Book 2. Recommended for any who enjoy an action and crime thriller, animal fiction, mystery. Great characters, complex plots, well-written and entertaining.

Two new characters, Corey and his dog Sam, join Andy's crew to make up the K Team for another GREAT who-dunit!

There's a new dog in town and he's Simon! More seriously, fans of Rosenfelt might remember that Andy Carpenter's last case involved Simon the police K-9 and his handler Corey. Both Corey and Simon are retired now and they've joined forces with Andy's wife Laurie (a force in her own right) and Marcus (would love to meet him) as well as Andy to form the K-team. Their first case is Judge Henry Hatchet Hendeson who is being blackmailed and then is shamed for what he does not know. This one gets a little complicated in the solution (follow closely near the end) but it's terrific with all the charm of the Carpenter novels. Andy's in the back seat here, with Corey in the front. Corey's got a great distinct voice and a sensibility that differs a tad from the rest of the team. This one kept me guessing- I could see the answer out there somewhere but couldn't put my finger on it, which is always the mark of a good read. Thanks to the publisher for the ARC. This is a great start to a new series and I look forward to spending more time with this cast of characters.

I enjoyed this story and following the step by step process of the K Team. Retired cops turned private investigators. This happens all the time. Who better to do the job? It was interesting trying to figure out who was doing what. Just who are the bad guys? This story will keep you guessing. I enjoyed getting to know Laurie, Andy, Marcus, Corey, Simon and friends. I can’t wait to see what their next case will be. I received this book from NetGalley, but my opinion is my own.
