Timothy R. Baldwin thrills his audience with another Kahale and Claude Mystery, Shadows of Doubt. Just as Marcus and Alissa adjust to being a couple, a case is thrust at them. This time it is personal to Marcus; their school is missing funds and all fingers point at the athletic director, his father. Adding Nate and Janice to the mix sets this amateur detective team on the road to danger with a blend of outlandish ideas. Each teenager has a skill and personality that keep the reader laughing, though the family drama makes it authentic. As Marcus and Alissa alternate telling their story, the reader grasps the magnitude of the situation. Marcus has to step back and evaluate the authorities in his life. Could everything he knew and valued be a facade?

Shadows of Doubt is a fascinating novel that keeps it real. Timothy R. Baldwin continues The Kahale and Claude Mysteries with some issues that give this book a realistic perspective. Having to solve a mystery so close to home keeps the characters diligent and leery of their leaders. The pace is fast as the crime puts a lot of pressure on Marcus's family and the evidence to clear his father's name is disappearing quickly. The characters have their flaws, but their loyalty and devotion to each other are inspiring. I found it commendable that they weighed the consequences of their actions and pushed forward to help a friend. I would highly recommend this novel to young adults who enjoy a good thriller."

The second book in the series picks up with Marcus, Alissa and friends starting a new school year, engaged in their sports activities. But all is not well with the school’s budget and Marcus’s dad, who is staring at losing his position as the coach.

The book is a good read for teenagers who want to read a slowburn, non-scifi and fantasy mystery. It touches on all the teen drama and different emotional aspects of family life. A touch of romance between the leading characters adds the usual teen dilemmas.

Overall , the book is a good read if you are not someone who likes nonstop action and want to get goosebumps on every second page of the book.
