Description

Frank Walsh is just twelve when he enters a Roman Catholic seminary to fulfil his dream of becoming a missionary priest in Africa.

Nine years later, having lost his faith, he makes an unsuccessful attempt to commit suicide, leaves the seminary and returns home.

With the help of Sally, the girl next door, he recovers from depression and starts to feel ‘normal’ again, especially sexually. After university, he leaves home – and Sally – to live in London.

There he tries to escape the ghosts of his past and fulfil his dream of being a writer. He meets Marina, a vibrant young Yugoslav girl at the school in Soho where he teaches English, and they fall in love. They plan to marry, but a chance meeting with a ghost from the past threatens to destroy this dream too.

Yet Frank refuses to be beaten, because he still has one dream left …

Advance Praise

"I like it … imaginatively strong … I was riveted … sensitively worked out … intelligently written … powerfully presented … this heart-felt, painful re-creation of a central hidden part of our culture.

Kate Cruise O’Brien, Poolbeg Press Ltd.

An impressive and skilfully crafted novel by an author with an equally impressive flair for originality and narrative-driven storytelling, Eugene Vesey's ""Ghosters"" is an inherently compelling read from beginning to end. Especially and unreservedly recommended for community library Contemporary General Fiction collections.

Midwest Book Review

I have just finished reading Eugene Vesey’s trilogy of novels, Ghosters, Opposite Worlds and Italian Girls, and have been thoroughly moved by their content. The three books are exceptionally well written, as you would expect from a scholar of English, and I would advise any reader with an interest in the problem of clerical abuse and the detritus it leaves behind to get the three.

This is a keeper. I've ordered a paper copy and am unlikely to risk lending it out. Honest, compelling, eye-opening, well written and well worth the reading. I know I will return to it. That's how much it impressed me.

I found this an unusual and intriguing book. The amount of detail regarding Catholicism was incredible, but not surprising when one considered the authors experience. It is hard hitting at covering the practices that young boys experienced at this religious institution. I found it incredible that more whistleblowing did not occur given that 80 boys shared a dormitory. It raises many issues which stay with you long after you finish reading. It is very well written and despite its subject matter makes for a riveting read.
I will definitely follow up more titles from this author.
