I loved how this book intertwined witchcraft and the craft of Cocktail making, while focusing on the history that intertwine both.
As someone who is a newbie in cocktail making, I found it very easy to follow the explanations and instructions.
Besides that, there are also many topics of witchcraft that are mentioned, like tarot, chakras, astrological bodies, edible elements and their powers and much more. This overall had the potential to be overbearing, since it's so much information in such a tight bundle, but surprisingly it did not do that.
The recipes are divided between the seasons, and you can bet I'll try every single one of the summer concoctions!
Overall the coktail recipes sounded very interesting, looked absolutely fantastic and did keep up to their namesakes, like the Dreamwork aviation riff or the playful fairy.
Can't wait to try them out!

This is the best cocktail book I've ever seen! It's gorgeous, the pictures are very pretty and there are so many unique and great cocktail's recipes! The part 1 is all about the ingredients, alcohol, drinkware, tools, and some syrup recipes that will be using in the cocktail's recipes. Then the part 2 has all the recipes divided by season. It's a great and pretty book! I received a free digital copy of this book from NetGalley in exchange for my honest review.

This is everything I could ever want in a cocktail book. This book is filled with absolutely magical and bewitching recipes! I can't wait to try each and every single one of them. The instructions are easy to follow and it has a guide on the tools, herbs, and other useful information for a fun witchy cocktail drink. I found the drinks to be whimsical and the names to be perfect. This is an absolute gem of a cocktail recipe book!

Such a fun book for anyone into witchcraft/witchcraft-y things. The recipes are easy to follow with detailed information for newbies! I love that the cocktail recipes are split up into seasonal drinks, making it easier for you to find an appropriate recipe for when you're looking. the pictures included are gorgeous and helpful to know what the drink should look like - and it adds wonderfully to the general aesthetic of the book.

Those who practice infuse magic into everything they do and this book is a great way to infuse your magic into libations. Whether you are crafting a cocktail for yourself, friends, family or a dinner party, this book has you covered.

The book is ambitious in that it covers so many topics in addition to crafting cocktails. it ties it back into the Wheel of the Year, Tarot, Seasons, astrological signs etc. Normally I would be hesitant as that’s a lot of ground to cover, but the author delivers extremely well. The best part is that not only do you get recipes for cocktails, there is so much information in the book that you can craft your own with intent and purpose based upon your ingredients. A FABULOUS way to infuse magic into all aspects of your life.

I recommend this book for the practitioner that wants to infuse magic in new ways. A book to add to your library for sure.

WitchCraft Cocktails is a fun cookbook combining witchcraft and cocktails. The recipes are divided in terms of seasons, so it's easy enough to find a cocktail suitable for an autumn night in front of the fireplace or whatever your need is.

A lot of great recipes in here to add a little magick to any holiday. My favorite, that I have tired so far, is the Yule Mule (yes, I know it isn't the right time of the year). However, I think the best thing about this book is that even if you find the drink isn't exactly to your taste, you can use the drinks as a base and doctor them up to create the perfect cocktails for you and any occasion. The author gives you correspondences and a lot of inspiration to assist in making beverages that are right to you.

No better time for a book of cocktails, especially witchy ones. I've made one of the drinks so far and it was grand. Enjoy!

This is a beautiful book that explores the connection between alcohol, concoctions and witchcraft. The historical context is provided in an engaging way and the photos within the book are stunning. I made one recipe which tasted great, but have to slowly build up my ingredients to make the others as some ingredients are a little harder to get. If you are interested in witchcraft and cocktails you will love this.

This was such a fun cocktail book, especially if you are into witchcraft! I loved how the recipes were broken down into seasons, and that there were lots of beautiful photos to show what the cocktails would look like. The instructions were easy to follow, and the author did a wonderful job of intertwining different witchcraft topics (i.e. chakras, tarot, edible elements like flowers, etc.) in a seamless way to where it never felt overwhelming.

Overall, this was a really nice and unique cocktail book that any level can easily use! I will definitely be buying this as a gift for some of my friends when it is released!

Disclosure: I received a complimentary eARC at no cost from the author/publisher for review purposes. I'd like to thank NetGalley and the publisher for providing me this opportunity!

Witchcraft Cocktails starts off as any good witchy cookbook should, by regaling the reader with the history of how these ingredients relate to our craft and the purposes they can serve; in this case, a quick glimpse at the history of ancient witches utilizing spirits in their craft and a short explanation of why alcohol can be such a valuable part of spellwork. It then launches into a chapter of definitions and correlations that I thought were so interesting (such as using rum for neutralizing negativity), so this book really lays down a solid guideline before getting down to the recipes. Also, the tip about using moon water for your ice cubes to imbue lunar magic into your drinks? Brilliant. This is the kind of stuff I'm here for.

Side note: the aforementioned basics chapter also describes many bartending techniques that have nothing to do with magic, such as how to express a peel, double straining, etc. — which leads me to believe even non-witches could learn a lot from this one!

Then, the author moves on to more craft-specific needs, such as attuning drinks to astrological bodies during retrogrades, and even basic information that I think will be especially helpful for new witches — quick notes on astrological phases, sabbats, and more. While this section doesn't attribute strictly to the drink recipes, the author explains that it's good information to know as you can attune specific spellwork types to certain times of year.

Finally, we get to the recipe section of the book, where the author's attention to detail continues by kicking off with recipes for bitters, simple syrups, and more. Most (though not all) of the recipes come with pictures, and each one is absolutely gorgeous! My favorite part, aside from how freaking delicious these drinks sound, is the "advanced magic" section at the bottom of each recipe, where advice is given for a tarot card or crystal pairing.

As far as the drink recipes themselves go, these were right up my alley for the most part. There are a lot of fairly sweet cocktails here, but I think even people who don't enjoy sweet drinks will find plenty to love. As someone who doesn't drink very often, I especially appreciated how many of these drinks could very easily be made alcohol-free (like The Prosperous Pumpkin, which I can't wait to try out this fall).

Overall, I think this is an absolutely fantastic recipe book that will be a great addition to the shelf of any alcohol-drinking witch, and even many non-witches. The recipes are well-crafted (which makes sense after learning the author is a long-practicing bartender!) and unique, the information on magic is informative yet brief and intriguing, and the layout of the whole thing is stunning. I definitely plan on picking up a finished copy for my shelf.

Thank you so much to the publisher for providing me with this review copy in exchange for an honest review!

WOW! I hardly ever give 5 stars, I reserve that distinction for books that are for some reason beloved, that I cherish, books that are like precious treasures that you take out and polish for when the days are dark, or you are in need of comfort or a walk down memory lane... or whatever.

There are many reasons why a book can be considered exceptional to someone, and this one has a bunch of them. It is so absolutely my cup of tea (or cup of Persephone's Descent, if you will). Here you will find information on crystals, a bit about the tarot, tips on various types of alcohol and why you would use them with specific herbs, and how to charge water with moonlight. Or ice, because who wants a 'stale' drink?

You'll discover edible elements and why you need them, rubbing shoulders with aligning your intentions and the reasons you would (or should) add bitters. Herbal infusions, syrups, and handcrafted extracts will make your fingers tingle, and the photography is something to see, each drink is as pretty, bewitching or exquisite as the last!

You will be dipping into this pretty little chest of wonders many times, and even if your inclinations do not lean towards the magical, the cocktail recipes are seriously out of this world. If the Night Circus came to life, they'd be drinking these drinks. It is the perfect gift for witchy souls. And then some.

Many (many) thanks to Net Galley, Adams Media, and Julia Halina Hadas for this spellbinding collection of enchanting concotions.

*I received a copy of this book for free from the publisher in exchange for an honest review*

I really love reading cookbooks, but to be honest, I'm a harder sell for mixology books because I'm pretty clueless about alcohol. Basically, I know it gets you drunk and sometimes it tastes better than other times! I usually only go for themed mixology books, like Tequila Mockingbird and Gone With the Gin. So taking a mixology book and fusing it with elements of witchcraft and paired crystal magic -- that part was actually an easy sell for me.

The book provides a brief, but comprehensive, introduction to how alcohol and magic have historically been interwined, follows up with modern attitudes toward both witchcraft and alcohol consumption, as well as a word about responsible alcohol consumption. Then, it provides the same sort of introduction to mixology, from tools of the trade to techniques. Next, it brings together the sacred elements of ritual and intention with technical elements of preparation, as well as making sure your prep area is clean psychically and for the best results.

The book contains recipes for syrups, bitters, and "shrubs" (a new one for me!) that are used throughout the book's recipes, but that an adventurous mixologist (or someone feeling fancy in quarantine!) can experiment with to create their own signature drink.

Part 2 of the book is the recipes themselves, which are categorized into seasons. If gin's not your jam, don't worry -- whatever your drink of choice, it's represented in the recipes. Even better -- there's a recipe in here that will make that one drink you don't like (for me, that's scotch) and make you think, "Well, that actually sounds pretty good."

First set of drinks I plan on making:
(Your mileage may vary)

Fall - Stinging Scorpion, Witch's Cauldron
Winter - Golden Ram, Imbolc Cleansing Lemon Drop
Spring - The Green Man (bonus, if you're a Type O Negative fan!!), Love's Lucky Potion
Summer - Lavender Sazerac, Siren's Song

I would say that I've got over half the book tagged with recipes I want to try, and quarantine is the ideal time to try it out. I am excited especially to test out some of these drinks for summer holidays and full moons.

I never really gave a thought to using alcohol along with spells; how novel! Of course, not being a drinker of alcohol it would never have occurred to me to add libations of any sort to my collection of spells! Nevertheless, I still enjoy reading about various alcoholic beverages to keep up with the times (Beer brewing, distillation, cordial making, etc...). Craft beers being all the rage and lately distillation of whisky has led to many new cocktails being created and I like to read about them. So, cocktail innovations regarding spellwork caught my eye and I had to take a peek at the book to see how it works!
Julia Halina Hada has certainly done a credible job of creating this book. Her book contains info on alcohol in history used not only in religion, but in healing and food preservation. Duh! It should have come to my mind! How did I not connect these? I like that she introduces, briefly, astrology, gems, tarot cards, herbs Wheel of the Wiccan year info for beginners , which may lead to other readers looking into those areas for study. There is also a chapter on bartending which may be of use.
The recipes themselves include syrups to mix in drinks (which I will immediately add to my growing collection syrups!) She arranges the cocktail by season, which makes sense. They are all intersting to read about and as a bonus can be made non-alcoholic! So there are some I can try! I enjoyed reading about how Ms. Hadas uses the drinks in her divinations, but I won't be using them,. All magic is unique to the individual so whatever works for the user is good. The Celebratory Sangria sounds fabulous for the current heat wave we're having here
This book would make a nice addition to a bar or drink book collection, bartenders may well enjoy passing on tidbits of info along with drinks! I think anyone interested in trying new cocktails will enjoy this book, pagan or not!

I am very excited to try these out! I love that these are broken into season, it makes finding what I am looking for easy. The images are bright and very detailed. The recipes are simple and easy to follow. This is ,a great book for those looking to celebrate their pagan pride with a little fun twist. Many of these recipes are easily made without alcohol as well.

I would buy this book just for the gorgeous photos! But the book is also informative and packed with tantalizing cocktail recipes that are divided by season. The book contains basic bartending skills as well as a history of how alcohol and magic have been intertwined, followed by a discussion of "Witchcraft Basics."

There are so many great cocktail recipes in this book, and I can't wait to try some of them out!

Witchcraft Cocktails is available from booksellers on 8 September 2020. Thanks to Julia Halina Hadas, Adams Media, and Net Galley for providing a review copy of this book.

I really enjoyed these recipes. As someone who spent years as a bartender I thought the creativity in these drinks are steller. The pictures are also gorgeous and perfect for the witch aesthetic. I think if you are new to mixology this can be a little intimidating as most of the drinks have many steps. However they are written clear and concise with instructions for syrups as well. My only concern is because they have many ingredients these drinks probably won't be the cheapest. Most people don't have a lot of the ingredients just on hand. That said if you are a passionate mixologist or throwing a party and want something of a twist I think this is one of the best drink recipe books I've seen yet.

A real enjoyable book. I enjoyed it for a number of reasons; the background of witchcraft, the history & origins of herbs and spices with alcohol and of course the great selection of recipes for cocktails. A really interesting read and a book I'll continue to delve in and out of.

This cookbook is a great title for those interested in witchy/magical cooking. The book provides a detailed introduction for those new to the craft, as well as a complete dictionary of terms, gemstones, and other important details a reader might need to understand. The authors give great descriptions of meanings and reasons why certain aspects are done for each cocktail. The drinks themselves are well-thought out, with easy-to-follow instructions and ingredients that are easily obtained/created through instructions provided. I love the separation of recipes through seasons of the year, giving this book a great flow for any reader to easily follow. Additionally, the photography is eye-catching and well-edited.

This is the type of book you really ought to have friends over and experiment with the potions together. I had fun learning about the vibes of certain alcohols and there are a few recipes that look delicious. I also appreciate that the author has an index of ingredients and what they are good for so that the reader can concoct their own drinks and spells. Plus it has pretty pictures!

Witchcraft Cocktails is an ideal book to begin learning about both witchcraft and cocktails. I can see myself dipping into this gorgeous book daily. For the seasoned pro, the recipes will be sure to impress, along with magic imbued in each cocktail.

The book itself is stunning, with enchanting photography and design. But that isn't the only reason I'm excited to buy WitchCraft Cocktails when it comes out this September. The information and writing is top notch. Hadas is a expert in both fields, and it shows throughout the pages.

Divided into two sections, the first is about herbs, crystals, tarot, and other good witchy stuff. I especially enjoyed reading about the intertwined history of alcohol and witchcraft. The second section is filled with 70 tantalizing cocktail recipes, organized by season.

As a novice witch, and a very basic cocktail drinker (vodka tonics with fresh lime are as complicated as I get!), I feel like this book was written just for me. There is a world of fascinating information in Witchcraft Cocktails; learning is going to be magical and delicious!

Thank you NetGalley and Adams Media!

This book is beautiful and lovely to look through. There are a wide variety of cocktails suggested here, all tied in with the witchcraft theme. I really enjoyed looking through this and can’t wait to try some of the recipes.

Disclaimer: I received an advanced reader’s copy of this book for review.

Witchcraft Cocktails by Julia Halina Hadas is a collection of cocktail recipes - some familiar and some new - with special attention to how these drinks can aid and uplift one’s magical practice. This is largely achieved through an exploration of the correspondences between ingredients and the elements, the seasons, astrological signs, crystals, and the tarot.

The recipes are preceded by a brief primer on cocktail making (tools, tips, etc.) and a quick description of some of the tools and observances of the contemporary witch. This is largely focused on astrology, crystals, the tarot, and the seasons or wheel of the year. For those who have spent a great deal of time developing their practice with these modalities, this is more of a brief summary than a full exploration. If anything, the author is laying the ground-work to reference these tools and techniques in the cocktail recipes that follow.

Cocktail recipes are divided by season, which makes it easy to find drinks that work well for seasonal holidays. There are also clear instructions on how to craft your own shrubs, bitters, and syrups which feature prominently in the recipes. The strength of the book is really the collection of recipes. There is something for almost any kind of mood or purpose. Julia Halina Hadas provides enough guidance on her process that a reader could gain enough knowledge to experiment beyond the 70 recipes in the book.

This book is an excellent resource for anyone looking to add something extra to their cocktail-making. For the experienced magical practitioner, the real value lies in the recipes themselves and the inspiration to work with these ingredients in new and productive ways. For the new (or simply curious) practitioner, I would take advantage of the bibliography to discover more foundational texts on astrology, herbalism, and tarot, as these are discussed in general terms. A very fun read, and a great addition to a kitchen witch’s bag of tricks.

Witchcraft Cocktails is such a well-balanced book. You can really tell the author has knowledge in both her craft and bartending.

This book is BEAUTIFUL. Not only are the pictures lovely, but the author provides so much background information and so many interesting factoids (both historical and otherwise). I don't think of myself as very witchy, but the author incorporates herbs/spices, stones, astrology, and more to make this an extremely informative as well as a visually stunning read. The recipes were also a good mix of creative new ideas and twists on old classics. I'm not sure how likely it is that I start making my own syrups, but I enjoyed reading about the process in case I ever decide I'm bougie enough to do that sort of thing (anything can happen while in quarantine, right?! What else do I have to do?!).

Overall, 4/5. Thank you to NetGalley and Adams Media for the eARC in exchange for my honest review!

I want to thank NetGalley, the publisher, and author Julia Halina Hadas for providing me with an ARC of this novel.

WitchCraft Cocktails is the perfect addition to my witchy book collection! I absolutely love this and it is now a staple on my bar cart. The photos throughout are incredibly gorgeous and I enjoyed all the facts sprinkled throughout. You can tell this author is incredibly knowledgeable about everything found within these pages. Definitely pick this up; the perfect blend between the craft and cocktails!

This a gorgeously laid-out book and I’ve really enjoyed learning the deeper meanings behind every ingredient that can comprise a cocktail! Each chapter is divided by season and each cocktail features either a crystal or a tarot card pairing. I also appreciate how easy it is to adapt these cocktails into non-alcoholic drinks.

I received a free e-ARC of this book from the publisher through Netgalley in exchange for an honest review.

This is a gorgeous book - the pictures are beautiful and engaging and absolutely make me want to make every single one of these recipes. Every cocktail looks like a potion straight out of a witch's cauldron and I wish each image also included a detailed list of where I can get some witchy glassware with the decor to match.

This book is immensely educational - it blends fun, stylish imagery with really interesting details on the basics of both bartending and witchcraft. This isn't a shallow pop culture version of Wiccan aesthetic for the sake of appropriating a vibe. There's real information here about Wicca practices and the importance of each individual ingredient and how they can be used to create your own concoctions. There's even a section on the history of alcohol in witchcraft. The explanations for the actual recipes are very simple and easy to follow, even for a beginner in cocktail-making. I was very happy to see that each recipe included info on how the ingredients of each drink could be used for affecting mood or energies. There's also info on each recipe about a tarot relevant to each drink.

My favorite part of every cookbook is always the pictures, and that's no different in this case. The drinks shown look so enticing - even the drinks that are more familiar (tequila sunrise, cosmo, etc.) have some fun twists on them and look absolutely beautiful in this book. My only slight criticism is that not every drink has a picture, and the pictures are not labeled so I had to take my best guess a couple of times about which picture went with which drink.

All in all, I think this book would be a perfect addition to the bookcase of any witchy gal with a love of libations. I've had a love for and obsession with witchcraft ever since I watched The Craft as a preteen and there's nothing I love more than a good, well-crafted drink. I can't wait to run out and get a physical copy of this book because I know it will look great on my coffee table and I've got at least a dozen of these drinks I can't wait to make.

This book was received as an ARC from Adams Media in exchange for an honest review. Opinions and thoughts expressed in this review are completely my own.

I did not know what to expect from this book but I can happily say that I was pleasantly surprised. I was fascinated not only by the ingredients but the methods and instructions of crafting these recipes. My favorite was the focus of breathing and taking in the aromas before you add them to the drinks for deeper effects. All of the recipes looked and sounded amazing and I can't wait to try them.

We will consider adding this title to our cookbook collection at our library. That is why we give this book 5 stars.

I never thought one could fill an entire book full of witchy cocktails but this book manages to pull it off! Full of fantastic recipes, stunning photos, and a lot of great information regarding both the witchcraft element but also the cocktail making element, this book manages to cover everything in a meaningful way! The book is organized in a really logical way and my favorite was that all the drink recipes are arranged by season, which works well for both shifting seasonal taste but also for the season-oriented nature of much witchcraft and ritual. A lot of thought, care and knowledge went into the making of WitchCraft Cocktails and that effort shines in the final product. I really enjoyed reading through this book and I'm so excited to try each and every one of these cocktails! This will be something I expect to go back to often! I highly recommend!

Witchcraft Cocktails earns 5+/5 Sips of Magic...Aaaah!

I have been exploring many facets of witchcraft lore and history along with Wicca beliefs and rituals, and as part of that journey, I have found Julia Halina Hadas, “practicing witch, bartender, and craft cocktail fanatic.” “Witchcraft Cocktails,” a gorgeous book with lovely photos (my favorite element of any recipe book), is a delightfully entertaining and informational guide. Across the ages infusing potent potables with magic and ritual has been an integral part of the culture and lifestyle, and in this book, I am eager to see how I might be able to incorporate such practices to expand my experiences along with improving and enriching my life...and maybe having a little fun, too.

Don’t just go straight to any of the seventy enticing recipes; start with the well-written and informative Part 1: The World of Witchcraft and Alcohol, a reference I will reread often. I was fascinated by the historical connections between alcohol and witchcraft: spiritual practices of the ancient Sumerians, offerings to deities, and brewing as a magical act using all four elements. The next chapter, “Bartender Basics,” is a mini, easy to understand lesson on alcohol types, tools, drinkware, and terminology. I spent a lot of time on “Witchcraft Basics” that provided a comprehensive review on witchcraft elements, some items of which I had little knowledge: astrological bodies and signs, Wiccan key seasonal celebrations, moon phases, chakras, crystals, tarot, and edible elements. Last, is “Witchcraft Ingredients” that provided further explanation into witchcraft connections and simple recipes for “bitters, shrubs, and syrups” to enhance and elevate one’s concoctions.

Part 2: Magical Cocktails is the frosting on this cake! The seventy cocktails are organized into the four seasonal groups, starting with Fall, to take advantage of the inherent magical elements. The sections introduce the season with some insights and purposes. Each recipe is easy to-follow, but be prepared to use an infusion, bitter, shrub, or syrup found in the “Witchcraft Ingredients.” Each recipe, delightfully named (ex. Persephone’s Decent), begins with a brief introduction of the background (Do you know the story of Persephone?) and information about connections (explore and embrace a shadowy side), the ingredients (pomegranates), and maybe a suggestion for an alternate ingredient (replace tequila with mezcal). The recipe lists the reflective and celebratory “Energies” invoked (ie. Strength), serving size (1), ingredient list (I found a pre-made agave syrup), and easy-to-follow directions (shaken, not stirred). The recipe concludes with “Advanced Magic” (“The High Priestess” in tarot) which holds further insights, queries to consider, and suggestions. This cocktail was delicious; a perfect toast for the Autumn Equinox. But, tradition is not overlooked, as an A to Z list of “Classic Cocktails” are included for the purist along with a chart on “Herbal Intentions.”

I love this book! It is much more than a clever and creative bartender’s guide and recipe book perfect for fans of crafted cocktails. I didn’t know what to expect, and was pleasantly surprised with the depth of knowledge, beautiful photographs, and variety of libations. I have gained once again a valuable and unique reference on my spiritual journey.

WitchCraft Cocktails is a really cool book and great reference for some interesting cocktails and awesome shrubs. The basics of cocktail making are included and the cocktails are organized by season, starting with fall. But my favorite portion of the book is the recipes for shrubs and syrups - those are so expensive purchase and having the reference for those makes the book worth the purchase! I have only tried a couple recipes so far but those have all worked great. The images and graphics of the book are cool and look natural without being fussy. Highly recommend!

Thank you Netgalley for an ARC of WitchCraft Cocktails.

First off let me admit that when I saw this title I thought it would just be inspiration for a Halloween party, I was surprised and cringed a bit when I realized that it really does focus a lot on real witchcraft, astrology, crystals and the like. That is not where my interests lie, however, when I read through the recipes there is truly some amazing interesting and unique cocktails included in here. The concoctions of creative simple syrups and peculiar ingredients made me want to try almost all of the recipes. The instructions are easy to follow and for the most part have a limited amount of ingredients. The photographs are dazzling. I am not sure that they will bring me love, money or psychic powers but I will say it cast its spell on me.

I am both a practicing pagan and a devotee of fancy drinks so I knew this book was for me. What I didn't know was that I'd like it so much that I'm already bookmarking recipes and pre-ordering a hardcover copy for my home. The book includes both bartending and witchcraft basics plus appendices of basic cocktail recipes and intentional correspondences for the herbs you might want to include when designing your own drinks. The photographs are stunning and atmospheric. The true star of this book are the the cocktail recipes themselves, indexed by season and accompanied by a suggested magical object or brief ritual. I think I'm going to get a lot of use out of this book.

Witchcraft Cocktails is easily the best cocktail book I have ever and will ever look at. The formatting itself is just gorgeous. As someone who is more spiritual and grew up with tarot cards, I appreciated the add-ins in the beginning with a tarot guide, astrology, and crystal information.

It's truly hard to find which drink to start with. They are all magical and thankfully easy to mix together. This cocktail book will be a staple for me going forward. It may even be a Christmas gift to a few friends!

very very insightful and informative. so much more info than i expected with zodiacs, tarots, crystals, etc. included. read it in one sitting and went straight to the liquor and metaphysical stores. perfect for "baby witches" or anyone wanting a compact reference guide.

Thank you to NetGalley and Adams Media for providing me with an e-arc of the book in exchange for an honest review.

5/5 Stars!

Holy Moly! I'm not sure I knew what I was getting when I first opened this book- in the best way possible. For someone who does not follow witchcraft practices, this was all very new to me and Hadas made it so easy to understand and follow along with. The book starts by providing a history of alcohol and witchcraft and how they've intersected over time. Then, there is a very comprehensive explanation of cocktail making. For me, the book really took off in Chapter 3, where Hadas provides the reader with witchcraft basics including all of the magical elements, gemstones, astrology, tarot, and the rationale behind the flavors used in the cocktails.

Even though I'm a lover of cocktails I've never created my own bitters or shrubs, although I've purchased them pre-made countless times. WitchCraft Cocktails provides these recipes while allowing you to customize each one with its own sweeteners as well. It's really interesting to see what goes into each element of the cocktail in addition to trying the final drink.

I think my absolute favorite part is that the cocktails aren't broken down by spirit, but by season! As we're finishing summer and entering fall I was so excited to see the cocktails embrace the flavors and feelings of the seasons. The standout for me was The Stinging Scorpion, a twist on the traditional Manhattan, which is both delicious and seasonal. Whether you're a practitioner of WitchCraft or not, this cocktail book is fantastic!

What an amazingly fun and unique cookbook! I am not a wiccan, or follow any of these rituals religiously, but I found all the information fascinating. A bit of background on crystals and chakras and how to utilize these for a whole body/life enhancer. Plenty of fun recipes for unique and quality drinks. The pictures are gorgeous and enticing.

Recipes are separated into seasons. This makes it easy to find something fun for a holiday party or in alignment of a solstice. Recipes include advanced magic using tarot cards and also which energies a drink focuses on.

I really loved everything about this book. I can't wait to order a physical copy to display. It's so fun.

Increase Your Kitchen Witch Cred

What a fun book of cocktails meant for those who consider themselves witches or who practice pagan magic. The book starts much like any other cocktail book, describing barkeeping basics like different types of alcohol and tools of the trade. Then it gets more interesting. There's also an introductory section about what the authors call “Witchcraft Basics.” In this section, she talks about various magical associations like planets, sun signs, tarot major arcana, and crystals and gemstones. The final introductory chapter provides recipes for infused syrups that can be made ahead for use in the cocktails. After all this preparation, we finally get to the cocktails, which are divided by season starting with fall. Each drink has a photograph—which I always appreciate—though some drinks are obscured in the winter section because they are in mugs, not cocktail glasses. The cocktail combinations sound yummy and look very inviting. Some colors achieved are stunning, like a light purple or deep red. For each recipe, the author provides the drink’s seasonal context, whether it's a holiday, a named moon (e.g., Snow Moon Psychic cocktail), a new astrological sign, or something else associated with the season (e.g., The Prosperous Pumpkin cocktail). At the bottom of each page, the author also shares an “advanced” magic strategy that involves a tarot card or crystal. Fun stuff! If you enjoy cocktails and find the idea of making magical ones intriguing, you may very well find this book a treasure trove of tasty delights.

This book had fun recipes with a witchy kick. WitchCraft Cocktails is perfect book to buy for your fall gatherings or as a hostess gift at those Halloween parties.

This is a gorgeous and incredibly well done book of witchy cocktails. While I am not Wiccan, I can appreciate the book for the wealth of information that author Julia Halina Hadas passes on about everything from Tarot cards to crystals to chakras along with really thorough bartending information and then a wonderful array of Wiccan cocktails for each season of the year. Beautiful photos show more than half of the cocktails (I wish it was all) and each one has an intro about its purpose. Spells and rituals are given in the directions to impart purposes like fertility, reversing bad luck and so on.

Hadas provides some recipes for syrups and other ingredients at the start, and many of the recipes require these master recipes. You'll need to source ingredients like elderberries, elderflowers, rose petals, hibiscus flowers, hyssop, nettles, etc. for these, so most of the recipes are not something many readers can instantly just whip up. I have two china cabinets full of dried herbs but I don't happen to have some of the herbal ingredients called for and some recipes call for fresh ones. Like most cocktail collections, it also calls for a wide range of spirits, so it can be a bit costly to compile the ingredients to make up a big selection of them. Hadas suggests buying small sample bottles of new-to-you liquor to see if you like it and then investing in larger sizes to save money. An end section contains simple recipes for a big selection of standard cocktails, too. The styling of the drinks in the photos is over the top phenomenal, and will have you wanting to make every one of them.

This will make a fantastic gift for Wiccan friends and family (I'm considering buying a copy for my fabulous goddaughter who is Wiccan and is turning 21 next month), or a treat for yourself. Recommended.

I read a temporary digital ARC of this book for review.

When I saw this book, I knew I had to check it out because it seemed like an interesting take on cocktails. I knew it was inspired by witchcraft, but I was still pleasantly surprised by how the author combined cocktails and witchcraft. I could tell that she is a practicing witch as well as a well-versed bartender right away.

The book starts out with a bit of history on alcohol, witchcraft, and general herb preservation. She also goes through the basics of bartending, which includes tools and techniques, as well as getting into the ingredients and how to combine witchcraft with drink making. It was a very interesting read and I rather enjoyed the opening.

Once I got to the drinks, I was amazed by the wide range of drinks and the information she includes with each one. Other than the delightful pictures, there is a bit of information on what inspired each drink and what properties the drinks have. While majority of the drinks are alcoholic beverages, there are some non-alcoholic drinks mixed in. I also like that the end of the book includes a list of classic cocktails and an herbal intentions list to encourage readers to try their hand at creating their own drinks based on tastes and what they hope to invoke.

Whether or not witchcraft or general herbal properties and what they can do for you is something you’re interested in, I think this is a great book. There’s a wide variety of delicious looking and sounding drinks along with detailed bartending tips and recipes on how to make some ingredients from scratch. I think that it’s a great book for anyone interested in expanding their cocktail recipes.

This book is so much more than I expected! I thought it would be just a book of witchcraft cocktails but this had quite a lot of useful information. I had no bartender knowledge but this book gives you that in a concise, easy to understand way. It had enough information on astrology, tarot, and herbs to satisfy curious minds, and provides that information in a way that is helpful to understand why different cocktails have certain ingredients. I'm quite impressed with this book and can't wait to try many of these drinks!

WitchCraft Cocktails

YUM, okay yes just yum! These are some of the most delicious sounding cocktails, as well as some of the prettiest. Made extra tasty with the addition of some gorgeous syrups and sparkly adornments, the concoctions in WitchCraft Cocktails are an inspiration!

Cleverly organized by season, this recipe book is just plain fun to read. Starting with Fall, of course, we’re encouraged to stir up a witch’s brew, or a pumpkin martini. And plenty of unique drinks for the other seasons as well.

I can’t resist commenting on the absolutely stunning photos included in WitchCraft Cocktails. Each concoction is artfully displayed in an appropriate glass, beautifully garnished, and surrounded by items to compliment it.

Most of the recipes require specially made syrups, but most look easy to make and can be stored in the fridge for awhile.

This is one beautifully designed cookbook. Cleverly written and gorgeous to look at, WitchCraft Cocktails would make the perfect gift. And kudos to the authors whose knowledge of mixology is equaled by their knowledge of mystical stuff, and definitely has my taste buds craving 5pm!

LOVED this one! It's incredibly well done. Full of history and useful information. Visually pleasing. Organized by the seasons. This is definitely not a book you want to miss.

A great reference book to have in your witchy kitchen. It contains the basic to witchcraft as to not simply give the riruals/recipes and leave beginners confused, giving information on moon phases, chakras, tarot, elements etc. And of course, a huge list of mystical recipes to try.

Loved this one! With the recipes divided into seasons its so fun to get excited about autumn and look forward to winter! I have a habit of trying a cocktail recipe I randomly find online one time and then forgetting it or not being able to find it again, with this book having all these fun cocktails at my fingertips is divine!

This book is SO AWESOME. I absolutely was not expecting the depth of research in what I thought was going to be a small book of spooky-themed cocktail recipes. The author actually takes time to explain both bartending AND witchcraft basics before leading you on a spiritual journey that really makes you think about what you are imbibing. Even if you don't drink, I think this a fascinating book to read for the witchcraft lore alone.

Such a fun book for anyone who likes witching and cocktails!

The first part of the book goes into short descriptions of the significance of some of the elements of the cocktails, such as the connotations of certain herbs and alcohols, as well as tarot cards which can be used to increase the power of the cocktail, and not least of all, the meaning behind holidays and times of the year for which certain cocktails are more suitable.

The second part jumps in the sea of colorful drinks (in beautiful glasses! I honestly love glasses of all kinds) which can both assist your practice and just provide a nice, refreshing beverage.

I don't know if I'll make many of these for real, as some require too many fancy alcohols and other ingredients, but it was enjoyable to read about them anyway!

I received an ARC of WitchCraft Cocktails by Julia Halina Hadas in exchange for the following review.

Magic and cocktails? Yes, please! Though not a Wiccan, I had so much fun reading this book. Not only are there inventive recipes and new twists on old classics, but there was a significant exploration of unique elements of bar-tending, Witchcraft, and herbalism. The recipes are more involved than just throwing some hard liquor in a glass with a mixer, but overall are fairly simple, though some may require prep time to brew the ingredients.

The growing season is now over, but I look forward to growing an extensive herb garden next summer with plans of making several of Hadas' shrubs, infusions, syrups, etc. I highly recommend this book to anyone who loves a good cocktail and finds Witchcraft intriguing.

This is an absolutely stunning book. As a bartender and practicing witch, this is an essential for my bar cart! There was a wonderful mix of actual cocktail making info and adding in witchcraft. I would buy this for any witchy friends in a heartbeat!

I LOVE this book!! It is so great for the soul! Empowering & filled with great tidbits for wellness. Each recipe is connected to the moon phases, making the drinking of these creative cocktails even more powerful with the inclusion of bitters. I’ve already tried a few and it is true that used properly, these really do bring various energies. I also enjoyed the connection to Tarot cards with each recipe. Thanks to NetGalley for the advanced digital copy. This is definitely one I’ll be picking up in published form for consistent reference.

As a kitchen witch and self proclaimed libation queen, I found myself intrigued at the latest offering by Julia Halina Hadas, WitchCraft Cocktails. What I found inside was a collection of perfectly named drinks (The Reaper, Ace of Swords, etc.,) that contain elements of ritual and incorporate astrology, crystals, herbs and seasons (among other tools) into potions that promote manifestations. Most of the recipes require some prep work such as making the infused ingredients or shopping for the botanicals required (many of which a practicing witch will have on hand). The author demonstrates her vast knowledge consistently throughout the book and the cocktail pictures scattered throughout are gorgeous!
I found that some of the cocktail recipes are a bit too involved for me to want to try my hand at due to requiring prep work and ingredients that are not easily sourced (think orange blossom water, jasmine flowers, saffron strings and activated charcoal to name a few). Instead, these are exactly the concoctions I would gladly pay top dollar for at a craft cocktail establishment where presentation also accounts for the experience. Someone please open a WitchCraft bar near me!
This is a gorgeous reference book filled to the brim with information to help the alchemist in all of us. I will certainly visit it again and consider it for gifting options for my witchy friends as well.
Many thanks to Adams Media and NetGalley for the opportunity to review this digital ARC in exchange for an honest and authentic review.

I thought this would just be a cocktail recipe book with unique names but I was wrong, it is so much more than that. Aside from just the recipes, we learn about the history of alcohol and witchcraft, bartending basics, alcohol varieties, tools, techniques and so much more. The recipes start with fall cocktails and I cannot wait to try them, perfect for this time of year.

This book has such an attention-grabbing tile I just had to read it. For someone who's friends with a witch and loves cocktails, I'm embarrassed by how much I didn't know. This book fixed that. It's a good beginner's guide. It explains everything from the types of glasés to the cards in a tarot set. It's really good that you first understand the basics of magi before attempting a magic coattail. The cocktails are tasty and alcoholic the way I like them(non-alcoholic available). I think it's worth reading.

‘Tis the season for witchcraft, which means all manner of witch-themed releases are hitting the shelves. WitchCraft Cocktails by Julia Halina Hadas captured my attention by combining two of my greatest loves—magic and booze. The first part of the book begins with a brief intro on the intersectional history of witches and alcohol before devoting a chapter to the basics of both bartending and magic craft. Having never been a bartender, I appreciated the short section of tips, tricks, and tools, and I also appreciated the emphasis on personal style in approaching spiritualism and spellcrafting, which leaves room for witches from all walks of life. Finally, there’s a chapter on magical (cocktail) ingredients and the spiritual energies and types of spell work associated with each based on their (generally botanical) components. Which brings us to the second part of the book . . . the cocktails! Four chapters of seasonally appropriate adult beverages to get you in the festive spirit and help you celebrate your sabbats in style. Each recipe is clearly outlined with an ingredients list and easy-to-follow steps. Photographs, where included, are sharp and stunning, somehow managing to be merry and moody all at once . . . kinda like most of the witches I know! A great addition to any collection of craft books, or to that little shelf on the liquor cabinet.

Thank you to the publisher and NetGalley for providing an eARC for review.

This is a great, comprehensive book based on mixed drinks and cocktails and teaches how to create these drinks at an almost basic level because of the recipes and discussions it includes, as well as how it seeks to teach readers how to whip up some magical and tasty drinks. I love how in depth this book went in terms of mixers and add ins and really seeks to teach.

If ever there were a bar tending class and it encompasses the content of Witchcraft Cocktails I’d be there with arsenal of essentials noted in this text. How fun! What an absolute escapist and sensorial experience this work centers for readers to become participants. Imagination and sense are loaded with alchemical ingredients to be crafted and savored by intimate or large scale groups (when possible of course). An absolute how to course that invites and inspires people to forage, hunt and craft beautiful cocktails or mock tails. Wondering the sticker price on this one and hoping to land it on my shelf some time soon. Buy it for your fantasy, magical realism lovers as an accoutrement and extension of what they love about genre. Just gorgeous! Thank you Netgalley!!!

This is a fun interesting take on alcoholic beverages. Although I don't believe in the the power of witches, this is still a very useful guide with recipes to make your own syrups and shrubs for flavoring in addition to full cocktail recipes.

This is no simple cocktail book, but one to use when you want to up your game and bring complex flavors together.

Recipes are grouped by season, and the photos are very well done, I jist wish there were more.

Thank you Adam's Media and NetGalley for this ARC in exchange for an honest review.

Such a cute cocktail cookbook! The recipes in this book sound delicious, and it is the perfect blend of bartending tips and witchcraft rules of thumb.

I loved everything about WitchCraft Cocktails! The descriptions, the pictures, the recipes, and the detail put into every recipe was just amazing.

First and foremost, WitchCraft Cocktails would be a wonderful addition to anyone's cocktail repertoire even if only for the drink recipes themselves. But beyond that, for it's true and intended purpose, this book is just a stunning compilation of well thought out and witchy recipes to stand alone or compliment any and all 'workings'.

I honestly picked up this book because I was getting into the Halloween, spooky season and thought a book on drink recipes would be fun for my friends and me to try. This book was so much more than what I expected and I am so here for all that it offers.

We not only get beautiful looking cocktail recipes but stunning photography, a brief primer or history of the drink, what it could be used for, and any "witchy enhancements" that could compliment them. There are also additional recipes of the non-witchy variety and recipes for drink components.

WitchCraft Cocktails would be a great gift for anyone but especially for those that are of a witchy or natural-earthy inclination.

Julia Halina Hadas’ WitchCraft Cocktails is a fun, well-written, and unique collection of magical drink recipes. I love the stunning pictures but I really wish that book had included much more pictures of the finished drinks as well as the various magical elements.

This is a fairly lengthy book that is packed with fascinating information and great recipes. However, I never feel overwhelmed because of Hadas’ approachable and easy-to-read language. This book is so fun and interesting that you’ll breeze through it!

The book’s first section features brief but thorough chapters on Alcohol and Witchcraft Intertwined, Bartending Basics, Witchcraft Basics, and Magical Ingredients. Hadas gives a brief overview of the long history between alcohol and magic. We also learn about different types of alcohols and the tools you will need to craft these drinks. There are also recipes for essential simple syrups and infusions. We also learn about magical properties like astrological bodies and signs as well as information on the tarot, chakras, and crystals. There’s also a fascinating subsection on edible elements which will help in making powerful magical beverages. Did you know that almond is associated with money? Did you also know that cardamom is associated with lust? I also learned that chili pepper can help break spells and that raspberry invokes happiness and love in spellwork.

The second part of the book is dedicated to a wide range of fascinating and unique cocktails. The drinks are mostly alcoholic but there are a few non-alcoholic options. This section is divided according to the four seasons and each seasonal section has a great little write-up. Each drink also has a short but interesting introduction as well as a list of the drink’s energies and an advanced magic section listing a tarot card or crystal to use in drink-making adventures.

The recipes are clear and well-written. I absolutely love the fun and topical names! Fall cocktails include the pomegranate-based Persephone’s Descent and the Prosperous Pumpkin while Winter offers the coffee-based Love Witch’s Brew and the fruity non-alcoholic The Witch’s Offering. Usher in Spring with lavender-flavored Milk Moon Beautifier as well as the flowery and spicy Beltane Bee’s Knees. Frolic into Summer with the floral and absinthe based Playful Fairy and the fresh Purifying Vodka Collins.

There are several lovely full-colour pictures of some of the drinks. I love the appropriate props. However, I really wish there were much more pictures of the cocktails as well as some photos of the magical items like the crystals.

WitchCraft Cocktails is an excellent and informative cocktail recipe book that will be perfect for any alcohol enthusiast, magical practitioner, or anyone looking to spice up the offerings at a party.
