Description

This omnibus edition includes Books 1 – 3 in the Spellcrest Academy series and is nearly 1,000 pages of adventure, mystery, romance, and twists you’ll never see coming.

Maeve Rhodes is not your typical Good Samaritan. However, when she stumbles upon a fallen, elderly woman, she stops and tries to do the right thing. Little does she know that this chance encounter will forever change the direction of her life.

Marked with a new tattoo emblazoned across her chest and struggling to control a whole host of new powers, Maeve finds her life spiraling out of control. That is, until one more chance encounter offers an explanation… and a privileged opportunity to attend Spellcrest Academy.

Paired with a shy elf and a moody Nephilim, Maeve quickly takes to her new home at the premier magical institution, not to mention the dreamy senior advisor whom, for some idiotic reason, she can’t stop thinking about. Love at first sight is sappy sh—crap for fairy tales, not real life. However, she can’t deny the instant connection.

As the school year progresses, Maeve discovers her invitation to the Academy might not have been so innocent after all. Sinister forces want her unique abilities and are willing to kill for them.

Maeve doesn’t just need to survive her classes, she must survive the plots against her, a decades-old magical war, and following her own capricious heart. She’s never been averse to diving into danger, but this time, she might be in over her head.

If you’re a fan of Bella Forrest or Leia Stone, then this will be one hell of a ride you won’t want to miss.

I absolutely loved the plot of this book, I liked very much the style of writing of this author and thought the story was very interesting unfortunately I didn't like there was a lot of cursing and sometimes the attitude of the protagonist but otherwise, I thought it was a very well written book, the world-building was simply great I didn't feel like there was something left unexplained, I loved the friendship between Maeve, Nym, and Razielle but overall it was a great book with a great plot.

Overall I enjoyed this book. I enjoyed Maeve’s story, she is a fighter and learned that she could do anything once she put her mind to it. I think a storyline of Nym and Razielle would be awesome. Maybe even Devon. I look forward to reading the next set of books.

Great book. I wasn't too sure in the beginning, but this series just keeps getting better. It is very different from other fantasy series that I have read, even mixing in a little bit of science fiction.

Maeve is a strong lead character that just keeps getting stronger. Unlike many female protagonists, Maeve is never portrayed as weak or wanting, and never relies on any one other than herself. This strength helps the story remain strong and interesting.

I just got the next part of the series and can't wait to get started.

I received this book from NetGalley as an ARC in return for an honest review.

When I first started reading The SpellCrest Academy Year One I had no idea I’d signed up to read 3 books. But, it turned out to be a blessing. The first book of the three wasn’t great. I had a hard time liking the main character Maeve, and I felt the whole magical school a little been there done that. I’ve read Harry Potter and found a few too many similarities, and because of this I couldn’t really embrace the book. Had it not been a 3 part book I probably would have stopped at book one and never picked up book two. But, I pushed on, and I’m so glad I did. The plot evolved wonderfully and the characters, including Maeve really started to grow on me. By the third book I was hooked, I finished it in an evening. The story line and world that Michael Pierce created became more original and highly entertaining. Maeve mostly stopped being a bratty teenager, and I kind of grew to enjoy her attitude and sharp wit.

I’ll definitely be buying the next in this series because there’s so much more to this story that I can’t wait to read.

Thank you NetGalley and Michael Pierce for sharing this series with me.

I loved this book series! Yes, it is like Hogwarts I suppose, but with a strong, kick-ass female lead. Nicely done intrigue and questions about who to trust exactly. When Maeve suddenly gets a magical needle inserted she finds out about a whole magical world next to the "normal" world. She gets into to an elite school to hone her powers and manages to get her little brother Finley in there too. Then the action really starts to kick off with making new friends, learning about magic, falling in love, getting betrayed and fighting for your life and your friends.
Maeve isn't your typical heroine, she's sarcastic and usually doesn't make the best decisions, but at her core she's also loyal to her friends and wants to do the right thing. I flew through this book set and understand there will be another trilogy covering the second year with a whole new plot. Can't wait to see what happens next!

I must say that “Spellcrest Academy” was one of the most exciting books that I have read in quite some time.

Each of the three books left me wanting more after completion. Overall the series is written well and it is easy to follow no matter your vocabulary range.

I am looking forward to reading more of Michael Pierce’s works.

A great trilogy full of twists and turns.
When stopping to help an old lady in distress orphan Maeve discovers a world of magic she never knew she existed. Finding a way to bring her younger brother with her to Spellcrest academy this trilogy follows the first year of their lives in this new magical world.

Discovering truth, betrayal and most of all friendship and family anything can happen when you find yourself at a school of magic rooming with an elf and an angel! But life is definitely not simple and Spellcrest is definitely not Hogwarts.

If you are a fan of Vampire academy or the shadowhunters series of books you will enjoy this spellbinding saga. Now I just need to read the next trilogy taking in Year 2

What a wonderfully fresh and creative take on the boom of Academy based stories, especially magical ones! I loved the main character especially, and I was completely and utterly enchanted by the plot, and world building from start to finish!

Before I begin my review for Spellcrest Academy: Year One by Michael Pierce, I would personally like to thank the author, the publishers and Netgalley for the opportunity to read this ARC and I have reviewed it honestly.

An imaginative and ignitable world of magic, multiverses and mind-bending tales, Spellcrest Academy: Year One is your one stop shop for all your supernatural Academy needs. Spellcrest Academy doesn't know what hit them when snarky, sassy and short-tempered Maeve barges head first into their world. Prepare to laugh out loud at the high level of sass, smile at the unbreakable friendships formed and gasp at the brutal betrayals. This combination of the first 3 Spellcrest Academy novels is a bombshell boxset that will keep you entranced right through night.

Spellcrest Academy: Year One features, but is not limited to, the following themes:
○ Magic
○ YA fantasy
○ YA romance
○ Magic/supernatural Academy
○ Friendships
○ Family
○ Betrayals
○ Multiverse
○ Fight scenes

My overall rating for Spellcrest Academy: Year One is…

4.5 Stars!

Wow oh wow did this series get better and better with each cliffhanger ending! Michael Pierce has created such a whimsical world with attractive characters and a storyline with thorns to drag you under. Though its a mountain to get through, with the 3 books in 1, I found myself enchanted by the magic of the stories. I can't wait to attend year 2 of Spellcrest!

This was a compilation of the first 3 books in the series which covered approximately 1 year in time. It was an interesting start to the story with Maeve and her brother. The writing was good and really put you into the story while she adapts to her once again new home and her powers. I didn't expect the twists and turns with the other worlds and all the secrets being kept past and present. Each book in this compilation ends with a cliffhanger and then picks right back up where it started in the next one.

Michael Pierce is a hell of a writer. He's able to make a chronicle of a year in the life of a pain-in-the-ass 17 year old Maeve Rhodes, a kid stuck in the foster system along with her younger brother, not only interesting but downright compelling. Of course Maeve's meeting with a dying wizard (Seamstress, to be accurate) and gaining her powers does add a lot of zest to the tale.

There are innumerable twists and turns in these three books and they're almost always plausible given the context of the plot. We ride along with Maeve and her friends, all students at Spellcrest Academy, a magic school of the first caliber, as they careen from crisis to disaster and back to crisis again. It's a real adventure and Pierce's writing chops make it well worthwhile tagging along. As interesting as the magic is--the complex interplay of changing relationships is even more compelling. Almost all the characters in the books evolve and often have hidden motives that really add to the unpredictable plot line.

Spellcrest Academy is an amazing book. It’s writing is descriptive without becoming repetitive or boring. On the contrary, I was actually laughing at how Maeve felt and dealt with different situations. She is everything I ever wanted to be as a 17 year old. She is brave, strong and doesn’t hesitate to help the people she loves, even if they’re not willing to do the same for her.
As for the story, it contains suspense, action and many shocking plot twists. Not only is your attention caught by the unseen magical “land” she is thrown into, but the mysteries and secrets she is determined to uncover.
In conclusion I loved every part of the experience and can barely wait to read what else the author, Michael Pierce, has in store.

In helping an elderly woman, Maeve Rhodes receives a tattoo across her chest and a host of powers she can't control. She has the opportunity to attend Spellcraft Academy, a prestigious place to learn where she is partnered with characters and crushes on her senior advisor. Aside from this, she soon discovers there are plots against her to get those powers she received, as well as a magical war she had no idea about.

This omnibus is a collection of books one through three of the Spellcrest Academy series, covering the first year of the academy: Spellcrest Academy, Crestfallen, and Crystallize. Maeve is the classic character that is suddenly thrust into a new world she knows nothing about, then is sent off to a magical school to learn about new powers dumped into her lap. There's a whole genre of academy books in urban fantasy, and this slots neatly into that collection. I'm glad I read this as the omnibus; books build on information from the prior ones, so you can't skip straight into the story without being really confused, and book one is so much worldbuilding that I didn't feel the same level of threat that the characters did.

Growing up in the foster care system, Maeve is firmly attached to her younger brother Finley and won't attend school without him, so she transfers magical ability to him so they both can attend the Academy. Because they're both first years, we get an introduction into the magical world, the creatures that live in it, the kinds of magic, and even the structure of the school. The danger shows up pretty rapidly in the first book, and I raced through the book until the end. This is where having an omnibus is a good thing because I could go straight to book two after the devastating ending for Maeve.

Book Two, Crestfallen, picks up soon after the first book ends. Instead of rooming with Nym and Razielle for the second trimester of the year, she's given her own room. Maeve doesn't think she can actively participate in classes after the end of book one, but she remains very intense and often angry. This fuels her ability to summon magic for spells; it definitely gets her into trouble and makes me sigh and roll my eyes at her a lot. Yes, she's seventeen and has no formal training prior to this, but she has such a chip on her shoulder that she can't appreciate help or even keep her head down to avoid attracting further notice of bullies when she knows there's a war. There are more revelations, which are expounded further in Book Three; it calls into question a lot of things that Maeve knew about herself, her family, and the people around her. I feel it also paints the Headmistress in an even worse light.

Maeve remains brash and likely to throw a punch more often than she is to sit still and think, but she does grow and change over the course of this arc of books. She still isn't quite eighteen at the end of this series, so keep that in mind if you get twitchy about teenagers getting frisky. Nothing is detailed, but it's mentioned. Overall, this omnibus is a solid start, and I like that she actually has training and attends her classes to improve her skill and fight for the friends and family that she makes.

I am so glad I got to read this book! I love the trope of the "school setting" I didn't know that it wasn't one book but THREE! So we got to see Maeve grow through her struggles. I also feel that Michael Pierce's writing improved from book one to the third. He is a great writer and I say this because he kept me engaged in the story and that is what counts at the end of the day. I look forward to reading book four in the series.

Good book overall. Some parts are slow and dragged on but it makes for good character development and deepens the storyline. It's not a fast paced read but worth picking up and finishing. Looking forward to the next volume.

This is a compendium of three books set over one school year. They all have their own individual plots but follow one larger story arc. I would highly recommend reading them one after another, as I felt it was more of one book with three parts than three books.

The books follow the tale of Maeve and her brother Finley, who get unexpectedly caught up in a magical world, and enrol in Spellcrest Academy. Unlike so many books set in magical schools, which seem to be based on the Harry Potter world, I thought these novels were unique, and I enjoyed them even more because of this.

I would recommend these three books, and I look forward to following Maeve's adventures in her second year.

I almost cried when this book ended, I want more! I have too many books on my TBR at the moment and need to get through them first.

This was such a cozy, comfy, and exciting read. The perfect amount of romance, action, and magic. This book isn't going to become a classic but it made me feel better on the hard days and was so satisfying to read on the good days. I would recommend this book!

This omnibus of 3 of spellcrest was amazing!! It was such a thrilling read and the storyline was just phenomenal... I really love the character of Maeve and the way she just does anything that she sets her mind to and makes sure that she and her friends do what is right. I do like the character of Devon.. he is always there for Maeve not matter what and always has her best interests at heart even though he does some stupid things... also, the way they work together at the end to stop tarquin is very inspiring and I'm so glad that maeve was able to kill him as she was the one who seemed to be most affected by him. Overall, this was an incredible book and I highly enjoyed reading it... cant wait to read year 2 !!
Thanks to netgalley for this early read.

Guys This is a 3 book boxset and I devoured it in like 3 days. I am on an academy kick and this completely fit the bill. Michael is a wordsmith in this genre and I am officially hooked.

The first book in the set took a little while for me to get into but once I did I was hooked. It had the typical Magical Academy setup and a cast that you decide you absolutely love. The book had some great twists and after I got hooked it really kept my attentions, especially in book 2 and 3.

I love the twists that completely catch you off guard because you don’t eee them often in this genre and the author did a great job of that which is one of the reasons I loved the book. I can’t wait to read more.

This is the first book I have read by this author and I was very pleasantly surprised at how well written it was and how much I enjoyed the story. The characters are well rounded and the description of the Spellcrest Academy is vivid and helps the reader picture the magical lessons.
As a Harry Potter fan I tend to stay away from this type of book but I am glad that I read it and would definitely read more of the series and from this author.
Thanks to Netgalley, the publisher and the author for the opportunity to read this book in exchange for an honest review.

A academy paranormal story a little slow in parts.
Like Maeve and her friends how they are there for each others.
Some angst,mystery,intrigue,drama and romance.
Voluntarily reviewed.

Maeve is a young woman who is kicking ass and taking names. Her growth throughout the books is tangible and honestly surprisingly refreshing. For once we see a character who reacts to their circumstances, not with meek acceptance, but with righteous anger. This is a character that I'd love to follow for several more books!

Thank you to Netgalley and BooksGoSocial for letting me read this book in exchange for an honest review!

Maeve is a girl who lost her parents when she was a child, since then she and her brother only have each other. So, when a strange woman attacks her and she wakes up with powers and having to go to a special school, she doesn't think it twice, gives some of her powers to her brother and they both go together to that school.

"Year one" is a compilation of the first three books of the saga Spellcrest Academy, which happens on Maeve's first year on the school, so I got the opportunity to read the first three books of an amazing and magical saga. I have to say that I was grateful for having all three books because I was able to finish Maeve's first year all at ones and the beginning and endings of the books were kind of linked, it was like reading one big book instead of a single one.

Maeve has to face lots of obstacles in this first year because Spellcrest Academy can be lots of things but easy is not one of them, lots of difficulties will appear in Maeve's way and she will have to solve them choosing carefully whom she can trust because not everything is what it seems. There are twists on every corner and treasons from the least expected characters. You can put your guard down any moment with this book because even the less expected can happen.

If there is something in this book it is action, you don't have any down or quiet part, the events are going from one to the next one, although there are some scenes of simply class I would have loved to see more about what classes Maeve is in and the interactions with her classmates, which I felt that, except the important ones, it is always the same with the other. Although I feel like there are some characters that don't have an important paper in the book and don't get much of a background, there are others with an amazing evolution (for good or bad) that made my feeling change a lot through the reading. I hope in the next book ("Year two", which I will obviously read) we get the opportunity to know more about those secondary characters and how the others grow even more in their next year.

To sum up, I could feel this was a good book from the first pages, the writing is easy to read and gets you into the book from the first words until the last one. I am sure Maeve's future is full of new surprises and adventures I can't wait to read.

Highly imaginative, with a cast of magical characters who are engaging and likeable. A spellbinding and twisty tale, with plenty of surprises along the way.

Wow - I tore through this 3 book collection in a couple days and I am torn between wanting to dive back in to the next collection right away or sit with this nice resolution at the end of this story arc.

3 books in one is a bit of a heavy lift, and when you load this set it shows it will take forever to finish, but that didn't deter me from diving in and learning about the wonderful world of Spellcrest Academy. I had never heard of the series before and read limited summaries, so was along for the ride 100%. The story revolves around Maeve. She's tough and was raised in the foster care system with her brother, Finley. Together, they take on the good and the bad, while trying to find their individuality, too.

What starts as a simple tale ends up taking a sharp turn when Maeve ends up being bestowed some magical seamstress powers by a dying woman. This is what ultimately leads her, and her brother (who they essentially need to sneak in) to the Spellcrest Academy. This is an elite magical school, complete with rich students, lots of hazing and bullying, and high pressure academics. I've got to say, Maeve's roommates and lunch friends are a definite highlight of these books. Finley, however, is not. While at first I thought Maeve may have been too paranoid or controlled, she ends up proving me wrong when she gets betrayed by just about... everybody! Jeez.

Book 1 show Maeve grow into a magical powerhouse, only to get thrown on her butt at the end. Book 2 picks up with Maeve in the "real world," but again, life has some surprises in store for her. A part I didn't mention from book 1 is Maeve's sort-of kind-of boyfriend, Devon, who is just... a problem. By book 2, I was pretty much done with him, but Maeve ends up taking him back when she returns to school. Book 2 is pretty much a build up to Maeve getting stronger and believing in herself. By Book 3, Maeve is a powerhouse with oodles of entanglements, which ends up making her easier to manipulate, but also so much stronger.

By the end of this crazy sprint through "year one" we ended in a place I never expected us to. This 3 book collection gives you a great rollercoaster ride through Maeve's first year at school. I'm 100% in, but also so exhausted! I think I'm going to take a quick break and then dive into box set 2 - where I hope we finally get to see Maeve punch youknowwho.

4 solid stars for the trilogy.

Book 1:
This was a quick read and I definitely enjoyed it enough to want to move forward in the series. Still, this book ended rather abruptly, and I'm not sure if it's because it's part of the omnibus year one collection and they edited it so that it would read more like a single book, but this first book really does just stop and the next book (I've started book 2) picks up immediately where the first book leaves off. So if you're going to read this, I would recommend you just read the year one omnibus edition rather than the individual books and just think of it as a single book.

So on to the story itself. In some ways, it reminds me of Harry Potter (they even have references to the book in a few of the places), except Harry Potter WAS born as a wizard, but he was raised ignorant of that fact. In this one, the magical world exists, and Maeve is ignorant of it, but she is not pulled in until she meets a mysterious woman at the beginning that starts her journey in the magical world. She goes to Spellcrest Academy with her brother as a first-year student.

Overall, I enjoyed this story, and I really liked some of the other characters, but I was iffy on Maeve, the main character. She is quick to anger, especially when it comes to her little brother (both at him and at anyone who she perceives as a threat to his well-being), but she is also funny (well, snarky) and there are definitely times when I like her. Still, time will tell how she turns out. I'm hoping the continuing story will find her growing and learning and being a bit more likable!

Book 2:
Overall I enjoyed this second book more than the first--the action was non-stop and I definitely wanted to find out what was next. I still don't love Maeve, but she's starting to grow on me. And I really like her best friends Nym and Razielle. As was the case in the first book, it's hard to tell who are the bad guys and good guys, although some of the characters are pretty nasty. I think part of what annoys me about Maeve is that she often acts like she is 14 rather than 18, maybe because she is a neophyte, but I think it's been part of her survival mode that makes her lash out as the first instinct. She does mature a little bit more in this one, although her anger still gets the best of her. But she's learning to channel that anger in a more productive way and for me, that's a sign of maturity. There were a number of surprises in this book, but the ending is not quite as abrupt as in the first book. It feels more wrapped up than the first book. I'll be continuing the series to find out what happens. One good thing about this series is that it moves so quickly!

Book 3:
Of the three books, this was my favorite of the books, partly because Maeve has definitely matured, and while she still has her faults, she acknowledges them and tries to work on them. This third book was definitely non-stop action and I ended up reading it in one sitting. I won't include any spoilers, but I do like how it ended. While this 3-book ARC ends nicely and I could totally stop right here and not feel like I'm missing anything, I plan on reading year 2 next. So overall I would say it was a slow start for me, but then the characters started growing on me and by the end, I loved it.

If I were to score the books individually, the first two books would get 4 stars and the third book would get 5 stars.

I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.

Well written collection of books, a bit slow in places and the main character likes to punch her way through a lot of situations, but the books kept me well captivated and I want to read the next collection now!

As I began this book it made me start to wonder and question what would happen next which for an avid reader is a good thing! The main character, Maeve, is fiesty and independent but shows her vulnerability while protecting her brother. The needle idea is inspired and brings a different scope to the purpose of magic between worlds. While the premise of a new magician learning her trade is a bit jaded the details and rollercoaster of how she progresses from having lots of power to little and back again keeps the reader interested. I feel there is some confusion over the war element as some characters swapped sides with no clear explanation, however thus does not detract from the overall plot. I was pleased there was no explicit scenes on character relationships as they are not needed to advance character development and there were several humourous scenes which were very believable. Each book is self contained but continues the overarching story line for the set. A good read. Definitely recommended!

The book is full of suspense and excitement, Maeve finds her life is at risk as her powers are very unusual, her room mates are a shy elf and a moody nephilim and she has a crush on her senior adviser. Michael Pierce writes well and the characters are well drawn, my only criticism is that the book ends on a cliffhanger, I don't usually bother to continue with series where the author does this but have made an exception in this case. Frankly, the book is good enough not to need this tactic, most people who enjoy a novel will buy at least one sequel. Spellcrest Academy is not Hogwarts and this is not Harry Potter fanfiction, that being said fans of Harry will enjoy these books.

I was granted complimentary access to Spellcrest Academy Year One via NetGalley. Thank you to all involved in affording me this opportunity! My thoughts are my own and my review is honest.

This is a bind-up of books 1-3 in the Spellcrest Academy series by Michael Pierce and covers Maeve's first year at the academy. Part paranormal mystery, part dark academia, this is a female protagonist alternative to the Harry Potter franchise for today's teens and teens at heart. Full of magic, lots of action, and a generous dose of teen angst, these books are easy reads that will keep you turning page after page without any desire to put it down!

I very much appreciate an academic series that devotes more than a single book to each school year, as that really is such a large chunk of time in a young person's life and the sheer number of notable events big and small in a teen's life that happen in the span of one year really could fill multiple novels. This series gets that!

My favourite book within this book was the third, and I hope that means the rest of the series just keeps getting stronger! Perhaps I would rate a year 2 bind-up at a full 5?

Check out this series if you love YA fantasy, mysteries, or dark academia.

WOW!

Ladies, gentlemen and all other, we finally have a YA heroine who has a family she risks it all for.

I feel like one of the best, and most underrated parts of at least the first book (there are three in this set), was Maeve's relationship with her little brother Finley. Not to spoil too much- I'll give a little more info on what I think really sold me on this story.

Maeve's parents are dead. She lives in the care system with her younger brother Finley, and looking after him is all she lives for. Whether its confronting high school bullies or risking her life to bring him into a life of magic and wonder.

A really quick paced read that is actually, stunningly original and fresh. It's fun, it's quick and it's heartwarming.

Why are you waiting to pick it up?
