Ever the consummate professional, Kate soldiers on in what proves to be a very difficult case, that of being on the trail for a vicious serial killer. Not only are bodies dropping, the the killer is leaving clues, clues that are teasing the police. What is more is that Kate begins to see a pattern that things aren't quite the way they should be in another respect. Encouraged the entire way through by her husband Chris, Kate works hard to discover answers. Kate finds that the lies and secrets along the way that prove that the murderer is closer that she could have ever thought.

Kate and her handpicked team of DS Emma Donaldson and DS Morgan Meredith interview a long list of suspects and use whatever means that are available to them to stop the killer before another victim is brutally murdered. Meanwhile, Kate's suspicions begin to grow in a new direction all while she is striving to keep evidence of her anxiety from everyone working around her.

As a stalwart fan of Carol Wyer's writing and having read both her Robyn Carter and Natalie Ward series, it is exciting to meet another character in the first of what most certainly will be another exciting series. I love the fact that Kate has the issues she has yet proves more than adept at her job, thus making her completely relatable. I also enjoyed meeting her team members as well as they worked along with Kate.

One thing that makes a story work for me is character development. The way Kate was written was marvelous and I also loved the supporting characters in this book. To add to this a strong plot with convincing conflicts and this book hit it out of the park. I really loved this book and the twists and turns that kept coming at me. including well-placed red herrings. Then considering the fact that my heart was in my throat more than once, this book captured my attention, and while trying to keep my tears at bay, I powered through this fabulous book.

Lastly, I will mention how invested I was in the Natalie Ward series so for Ms. Wyer to develop a new character was a very nice change. It truly was a chance well played. I am certain that fans of her previous series and standalone novels will feel as I do. The fact that she could weave this wonderful first book in a new series makes me more pleased than words can say. I cannot wait to see more of Kate and hope that she gets stronger and stronger as time goes on.

When this author announces there is a new book coming out, I get excited. When she announces it is the start of a new series, I can barely contain myself! I have read every crime book which this author has written, and all the series are guaranteed to pack a punch every single time!

Our new female lead is Detective Inspector Kate Young. Right from the first page, it’s obvious that she is a tormented woman, and something troubling had happened in her recent past. We aren’t told what this is initially, but we are drip-fed little flashbacks as Kate’s story progresses, which leaves us in no doubt that Kate has been witness to an unspeakable horror and has since been on leave from her job. Being the best detective in the force she is asked to return to work by her Chief Superintendent, John Dickson to help solve the murder of a prominent businessman. Is she ready for the pressures of a high-profile case?

The book was fantastic! To be honest, I had no doubt it wouldn’t be, but I was totally unprepared for just how good it actually was! I loved Kate Young’s character. She begins nervous, edgy and unsure of herself, but despite all the flashbacks and memory triggers she gets back into the swing of her role and begins to show us why she’s considered to be the best in the force! I found myself asking though, through the first half of the book, so many questions about Kate – why is she taking pills? are they really doing her any good? are her team really on her side? and what happened to her so that she’s ended up like she is now? Of course, good things come to those that wait, and all these questions (and more!!) are answered as the book moves on!

The writing was wonderfully descriptive, adding to the tension which is running through every page. I loved how she described her husband Chris and how she ‘loved the very bones of him’, showing how devoted she was to him. But then, seeing how she was obviously a shadow of her former self due to whatever had happened saddened me terribly. Back at work, Kate is tenacious, gritty and determined to get to the truth. When the body count begins to rise, Kate and her team work well together to find a link between the victims, despite her team appearing to show some mistrust in Kate’s abilities. Her two handpicked team members, DS Emma Donaldson and DS Morgan Meredith are interesting characters and I look forward to seeing how they continue to all work as a team.

There is only so much more I can say about how the storyline pans out for fear of giving away any spoilers. The ‘killer’ storyline is fast paced, twisted and keeps you on your toes trying to work out who it may be. There are lots of suspects thrown into the mix, and by the half way point I had a list as long as my arm of who I thought it could be! Of course, this author is far to clever with her writing to give anything away too early into the book, and you are left waiting for when she feels it’s the right time to give you a bit more! There were points in the book where bits of the story slot into place, and I have to admit to giving a silent little cheer every now and then, confirming I’d worked it out right, or a small groan because I’d got it wrong!

The cover of the book portrays perfectly the dark and tense nature of the book. The plot is upsetting at times, but dealt with sensitively. It is heart-breaking and heart-stopping in equal measures, sometimes both together! Emotionally charged and suspense filled, this book ensured that once I’d started it, I wouldn’t be able to put it down until I’d finished. There are only a handful of crime authors whose books leave me feeling this way – Carol Wyer is one of them! A fantastic start to a series with an unbelievably amazing leading character, I am left on tenterhooks now while I wait for the next book in the series to carry on Kate Young’s story. Fab, fab, fab, fab, fab!!

After reading her DI Natalie Ward series, I didn’t think Carol Wyer could surpass herself but with her new heroine DI Kate Young she has reached new heights. For lovers of British detective thrillers this is a must read but it is certainly not for the squeamish. The story line is both clever and intricate, with new threads being woven in as the book progresses. You think you’ve solved it and another twist. One of Carol’s many skills is writing a story within a story and bringing her main characters to life. In this book, aside from finding out who is responsible for the gruesome murders and why, you have the story of Kate. From the beginning you realise that Kate Young has been damaged by a trauma from her past and you are willing her to overcome her demons and succeed. By the end it is as important to find out what happens to Kate as it is to find the killer. And what an ending. It certainly left me wanting more and desperate to read book two in what I hope will be a long series involving Carol’s new heroine. I can’t wait for the next instalment in her life.

Carol Wyer is getting good at writing these thrillers .... An Eye For An Eye is a brilliant blend of just the right amount of drama mixed with the whodunnit /psychopathic angle. The characters are utterly believable - DI Kate Young is brilliant at her job but could her recent trauma cloud her intuition; her supportive colleagues; her bosses, the victims; the suspects. The crimes - detailed and gory and yet intriguing. The suspects - each one had murder possibilities, each alibi was plausible, each had a case for and against. How the case unravelled was very clever, I did not guess the murderer until the very end. Highly recommended. I loved it.

Carol Wyer has done it again!! I love her books and this one does not disappoint.

Unless you have lived under a rock for the last five years, you'll know how much I love Carol Wyer's previous series featuring Robyn Carter and Natalie Ward. An Eye For An Eye is the beginning of a new series with Detective Inspector Kate Young, and to be honest, it's totally on another level. Kate is a very complex character and I loved getting to know her. It's difficult to say much more than that without giving away spoilers, but there are definitely plenty of places that Wyer could go with her development and I'm excited to see what she decides, as Kate is one of those characters I could root for whatever happens. Kate works alongside fellow officers, Morgan and Emma, both of whom I found very likeable and I'm very interested to read more of their personal story as the series continues.

The plot of An Eye For An Eye is complex, and Wyer weaves lots of threads together to make sure it works. It is meticulously planned and I admire the patience this must have taken! I can genuinely say I had absolutely no idea where the investigation was going until the final few chapters, but I was engaged and intrigued from beginning to end. There are several unusual aspects to this case, but I enjoyed learning about objects and ideas I'd never come across before. The twists in An Eye For An Eye are literally jaw dropping, but I'll say no more for fear of spoilers.

An Eye For An Eye ends on a huge cliffhanger, and Wyer is, quite frankly, cruel for making us wait so long for the next one. I want to read it now!

I enjoyed meeting the characters in Carol Wyer's new series. They were well-rounded, some were flawed (and some of those more than others).

It took some time to really get into the book, but once I did, I was loath to put it down.

I'm looking forward to more in this series.

DI Kate Young has been on leave after some sort of traumatic experience. You get to learn about this as the book progresses. Invited back to work Kate is very unsure if she is read for this or even capable. She agrees to go back and start out with a very small team. just three of them, so Along with Kate she has DS Emma Donaldson on DS Morgan Meredith. The team are faced with a murder case. A well known businessman has been murdered and Kate is now the lead on the case.
As this book starts with you knowing something has happened to Kate, you are slowly drip fed information on what happened with her. Kate seems to grow in confidence as we go through the book and you know she is going to be a formidable character as this series grows.
A first class fast paced read that will grab you early on and keep hold of you. This author has the ability to surprise with each and every book she writes. An exceptional writer who scares me sometimes with the ideas she comes up with for a story. lol

I have read and loved every one of Carol Wyer's crime series and I didn't think I could be any more shocked after what happened to DI Natalie Ward. However this is the first of the DI Kate Young series and it started with not just one bang but multiple bangs which shook me to the core.

Kate is a fantastic detective and we meet her as she is trying to solve an unusual but horrendous murder. The trouble is she can't quite concentrate on it because she is suffering from PTSD (Well that's my diagnosis anyway). As usual, with Carol's books I always feel as though I'm part of the investigation and love trying to fit the pieces of the puzzle together. Quite often I also find that I have empathy with the killer and whilst I think they were very wrong to do what they did, the reason why they did it was heart-breaking too.

The author has certainly not shied away from some of the horrific things that go on in this world and has represented them in the book. She has also dealt with the shocking blow that devastated me in a really clever way. I think I can already tell that this is going to be the best series and that's saying alot because I've loved the others.

This book is shocking in many ways but I really don't want to give anything away so I'll leave that there. Suffice to say you will have a major adrenaline hit whilst reading it as the true awfulness unfolds.

I'm already intrigued by Kate's back story with her step sister and am looking forward to seeing a huge helping of revenge on certain people which I'm sure we'll discover as the series progresses.

An Eye For An Eye is gritty, raw and painful and will certainly keep you up at night.

Well Hello, Kate!!! It must always be a bit daunting for an author who introduces a new character into their fold, especially when they already have established characters. Here it is no different, Carol has Robyn and Natalie, so I was nervous to see how Kate would fit. It took me a few chapters to get into the flow of the book, this is because in a way I felt like I might be betraying Robyn and Natalie so a small part of me maybe didn’t want to like the book. However, when it clicked, it clicked, and there is more than enough room for Kate Young in this world. (Plus I loved the book)

Robyn and Natalie are two powerhouse women, they both suffer some big losses, they are conflicted, tenacious but loyal so how would Kate fair up? Well, she slotted in as if she has always been there. Her story, well I won’t talk about her story but you can see throughout how it affects her, it bleeds into her work life. The constant worry of the case with the blurring of lines is a huge factor throughout this book. We have a new team to meet and they have Kate’s back even when you feel like they might not.

We have a whole bunch of new characters to be wary of, no one to hate just yet but we do have a dodgy wotsit that I will be keeping my eye on! But I can sense when the fallout comes it will be a HUGE explosion. I don’t think anyone will be safe and it is quite an exciting thread to carry on in the series. Although, exciting might not be the right word considering how dark this thread is!! Yup, Carol is back darker than before! More ruthless and she makes sure she makes your heart crack a little.

I didn’t play detective, I watched the story, the sad tale (they are always sad) and the reasoning behind it all. However, I love that this story is not wrapped up all neatly there are a few loose threads floundering, ready to take us on to the next phase of the story. One thing to love is when the book title makes sense, here An Eye for An Eye makes perfect sense and it adds to yet another layer to this tale. When everything, and I mean everything, clicks in to place it is an eye-watering OMG moment! One that will make your heart falter as you second-guess what you have read. I had suspicions all along and I really did not want them to be true, the lump in my throat was huge!

You can not help but love Kate. You feel her pain and you can see easily why she loves her bubble and wants to stay there. I bet so many of us would want to do the same!!

So many more words I want to say, but I can’t. But please do take the chance on Kate, you won’t regret it!

Wow, what a brilliant start to a new series. Having been a fan of Carol Wyer’s previous crime novels, I was really looking forward to seeing what she would come up with in, An Eye For An Eye. This is the first novel to feature DI Kate Young, and I can’t wait to see what Carol has install for Kate and the series next.

When we first meet Kate, she is just returning to work having recently gone through a traumatic event. Thoughts about that day still plague her mind, but she is determined to get back to work. And she is thrown headfirst into a gruesome new case. The body of a man, a wealthy businessman, who has also been tortured, has been found by his secretary. The part I found the most gruesome about this case was that the victim’s eye had been removed. This shows that whoever is carrying out the murders is doing this for revenge. This also becomes quickly apparent to Kate and her team.

There were so many intriguing characters and potential suspects in this book. It’s certainly fair to say that the first man to end up dead could have attracted a lot of enemies. Soon Kate finds herself in a race against time as more people are killed. But what is the motive here? When Kate finds a connection between the men who have been targeted, she uncovers an unnerving, dark secret. I really wanted to get to the bottom of what was happening here, and I was invested in the plot.

I really felt for Kate as I was reading this book. I could feel her grief as she attempted to come to terms with what has happened in her recent history. She is trying to push on with things, but she is struggling, and there are some heartbreaking scenes, which I think will make readers really connect with Kate.

Carol Wyer tells a devastating story here. It makes you feel for all of those who are involved, especially the people who are left behind. There is a very powerful scene right towards the end of the book, which even makes Kate stop and think, and I thought it was very well done.

An Eye For An Eye is very well plotted, and the different avenues which Carol explored hid the real motives and the killer really well. Some of the twists which came towards the end of the book knocked me for six.

I was gripped right the way through, and I am eagerly awaiting the next book in the series. DI Kate Young is a character who, I am sure, will become a firm favourite of mine in the crime fiction genre. If you’re a fan of Carol’s books, then you are in for a treat. I can’t wait to read more!

She’s done it again! When one of my favourite crime writers announced a new series I couldn’t contain my excitement and I was thrilled to be one of the lucky people who first received a copy. Expectations were high and, as always, Ms. Wyer did not disappoint. An Eye for an Eye is a gripping, twisty, pacy and gritty thriller that had me hooked from the start. I couldn’t put it down and was up until 5am the first night as I didn’t want to stop reading!

Detective Kate Young is off work after a traumatic incident earlier in the year that led to PTSD. She is still struggling to get through each day when one of her bosses asks her to come back to work on a sensitive case. She isn’t sure she’s ready to go back, but her boss convinces her that he needs his best detective, so she returns.

Supported by her husband, Chris, and her handpicked team, Kate finds returning even more difficult than she imagined. But she’s determined to crack the case, particularly after finding clues that seem to point to the killer being uncomfortably close to home.

This book has everything you expect when you pick up a Carol Wyer book: great writing that is gritty and compelling, grizzly murders, a layered plot full of shocking twists, and interesting characters.

Once again Carol has created a protagonist who is a feisty, flawed and strong-willed woman with an interesting backstory. When we meet Kate she’s on leave from work and struggling with PTSD after a traumatic incident earlier in the year. She is suffering from flashbacks, nightmares and disassociation and using pills to try and cope with her feelings. When she returns to work she must battle against not only her symptoms but the doubts and insecurities of herself and those around her. Everyone is watching and some are counting on her to fail, but Kate is determined to overcome her challenges to bring a killer to justice. As someone with PTSD following trauma I appreciate Carol portraying the condition in such a raw and accurate way. Despite these things I will admit it took me a little while to warm to Kate, though I found her compelling and was rooting for her from start to finish.

As much as I love her Natalie Ward books I am glad that Carol decided to write a new series as I loved this thrilling page-turner. And, after that ending, I can’t wait for book two!

I thoroughly enjoyed this book and look forward to the next in the series. Read in two sittings.

An Eye for an Eye is the first book in a new series by author Carol Wyer. Her Robin Carter's story ended, thus DI Kate Young story begins.

At the beginning of the book, Kate Young is on compassionate leave after having witnessed a PTSD inducing event : A shooter rampage on a train, then demonstrated she couldn't keep working without healing first. We get bit after bit of the train shooting story through Kate Young's flashbacks, when she doesn't take her meds on time. She does use them a lot, tho, sometimes complementing them with wine, in spite of her husband Chris' support.

When a public figure falls victims to a pretty weird act of torture and murder, the Superintendent specifically asks for Kate Young to lead the case with a small team of coppers she trusts : Emma and Morgan, a pair whose interactions through the book will bring out laughs, but sometimes also raise eyebrows.

We also meet the highly regarded head of forensics, Erwin and Faith, a new intern from Africa who did everything in her power to end up in Erwin's lab

So much insistence for Kate to take the case makes her paranoid. Why if the superintendent and the DSI, in spite of being an old family friend, were hoping for her to fail ? And if so, to achieve what ? Her husband isn't helping, buying into the conspiracy theory himself. In any case, Kate is set on avoiding any traps, and proving her worth to get back on the force.

When a grueling scene precedes the murder of another public figure, and a link is found between the two victims and some other people, Kate's paranoia cranks up to eleven. Threats to give the investigation to another detective doesn't help, and Kate is determined to uncover the whole truth herself, even if some powerful people might not want her to.

Or, that's the story we're given as seen by the main protagonist, DI Kate Young. Even if the book is written in the third person, she's the one we're following. She suffers from PTSD after a highly traumatic event. She pops anxiolytics as Max Payne pops painkillers. She has frequent flashbacks and losses of time. She is highly paranoid. Is she really a reliable narrator ?...

That's one of the strenghts of this book. Damaged characters are nothing new. But, a character so damaged her vision of reality might be altered, bringing the reader into the rabbit's hole with her ? That's less common.

Carol Wyer did her research on this kind of mental problems, interviewing afflicted people, and she manages to give the reader a pretty good idea of how they can affect someone like DI Kate Young.

The writing is on par with Carol Wyer's other books. The story is quick paced, but she doesn't forget to give us a good view of the locales. The supporting cast of characters is really fleshed out and, we end up wanting to read more about them all.

You can try and guess the killer and the motive. There are some red herrings here and there but, if you're a seasoned detective, you can guess them a little before they're properly revealed in the final batch of pages.

I can't wait to read more about DI Kate Young, and see how she manages her next assignments, in spite of her mental health problems.

Really good thriller and first book to start a series with.

It gave me many feelings of Midsummer Murders and the suspense was on with each page turned .

Probably the most interesting thing that I enjoyed was that the author managed to keep me invested throughout the book and the secret life that many of the characters/suspects were undergoing was a twist that I haven’t predicted.

A must read story.

Chris is her soul mate and wants her to lay off the pills, the nightmares her mental health is not getting any better after what she has been through, is she ready to go back to work, DS William Chase needs her back on the team. that kicks off with the murder of Alex Corby of Corby's international a big firm owning huge warehouses, a gruesome DIY death the killer is either a chef or got OCD. as we go into the book its is so very dark, I couldn't fault it. it will chill you all over as you read chapter after chapter

This was my first Carol Wyer book and certainly not my last; I just ordered another one.
DI Kate Young is suffering from extreme PTSD, with flashbacks and panic attacks. She is called back from a three-month leave to head a small team investigating a gruesome killing. Despite having hallucinations of the horrific mass shooting that sidelined her, she's determined to solve the case.
It was hard for me to put the book down, it is so intense and riveting - I had to remind myself to breathe. Kate is an interesting character, fighting to keep herself together and do her job as best she can. Can't wait for no. 2 in the series, out later this year. Highly recommended!

What a great start to a new series! DI Kate Young is recovering from a traumatic experience on the job when she's called back from leave to head a small team of two on a local murder case. It turns out that the victim was friends with her Superintendent and he specifically wanted her as the detective in charge. She has some trouble readjusting, as she still experiences flashbacks and relies on medication to get by. But she's determined to work as hard as she needs to so that no one doubts her expertise.

But as hard as she works, she can't help noticing that everyone is surprised that she's back on the job already. Thank goodness for her husband Chris's words of encouragement - he has always told her to listen to her gut and follow the evidence, no matter who it leads to. And there are plenty of people under suspicion on this one who believe they are above the law. As more victims are discovered, it becomes clear that they are connected - if Kate and her team could just put those last few pieces together, they could discover who is at the heart of these ruthless killings. But how is she supposed to do that with only two other detectives assigned to her? If the Superintendent wants this case resolved as soon as possible, why isn't she given more assistance to do so? It's almost like she's being set up to fail...

Not only is this an intriguing mystery, but it's a heartbreaking story, as well. I didn't expect to be brought to tears in the middle of a page-turning thriller, that's for sure. So be ready for an emotional roller coaster and hang on tight, because it's one heck of a ride to the end!

I have been a fan of Carol’s work for a while now. I haven’t quite caught up with everything that she has written to date but I am slowly getting there. I read the synopsis for ‘An Eye For An Eye’ and it certainly sounded like the brilliant action packed, crime thriller that I have to expect from Carol. I absolutely loved reading ‘An Eye For An Eye’ but more about that in a bit.
I loved the character of Detective Inspector Kate Young and I warmed to her from the start. In fact I began to think of her as a friend and I started to feel all protective of her. When we first meet her, we discover that she was on sick leave from the force for reasons which soon become apparent. A new case leads to Kate returning to work after her input is requested. I did wonder about the motives behind her return to work, but I won’t go any further into them as I would hate to give too much away. All I can say is underestimate Kate at your peril. She soon gets back into the swing of things and she soon makes headway into the investigation.
I was hooked on this book from the moment I glimpsed the name ‘Carol Wyer’ on the book page on Amazon. To say that Carol’s books prove to be addictive reading is a huge understatement. As soon as I managed to get hold of a copy of the book, I squirrelled myself away until I had read every single word of the story. For me, ‘An Eye For An Eye’ is the definition of an unputdownable page turner of a read. I couldn’t bear to tear my attention away from the book even for just a nano second. I think I feared missing out on a clue or a vital nugget of information. All too quickly I reached the end of ‘An Eye For An Eye’ and I had to bid farewell to Kate and her little team. It’s only a temporary farewell because the second book in the DI Kate Young series is called ‘A Cut For A Cut’ and it is due for release on 24th June 2021. I can’t flipping wait and I have already pre-ordered it.
‘An Eye For An Eye’ is blooming brilliantly written but then I have come to expect nothing less from Carol Wyer. She certainly knows how to start the story with a bang and what follows proves to be a very tense and dramatic investigation with more twists and turns to it than you would know what to do with. Reading ‘An Eye For An Eye’ felt like being on one hell of a scary and unpredictable rollercoaster ride with no idea of which direction the story was going to go in. For me, the story started with a bang and maintained a fast pace throughout. I found this to be a gripping read, which had me on the edge of my seat throughout and kept my attention from start to finish.
In short, I thoroughly enjoyed reading ‘An Eye For An Eye’ and I would definitely recommend this superb book to other readers. I will certainly be reading more of Carol’s work in the future. The score on the Ginger Book Geek board is a very well deserved 5* out of 5*.

I have previously read and enjoyed the Detective Natalie Ward series by this author, appreciating a competent protagonist whose personal life was sometimes difficult but which she managed to keep from affecting her work. This novel in contrast portrayed a police officer who somehow managed to solve her case while suffering from appalling mental health problems and an addiction to some sort of prescribed medication.

The plot moved along briskly, but included distressing scenes of violence, and the plot was a little unoriginal if you read as much detective fiction as I do. I worked out who the murderer was early on by the time honoured method of wondering why on earth this character had been included in the story. Finally, I think the author uses the word microscopic to mean small, whereas I have always assumed it meant 'only visible with the aid of a microscope', and this caused me confusion early on.

Carol Wyer has come up with yet another fabulous series in An Eye for An Eye featuring Detective Kate Young.

Kate is dealing with some personal trauma but comes back to work and is put on the case of a murdered millionaire.

Alex is the not the only victim to be tortured and left dead .

Kate and her team of only three are scrambling to solve the case as Kate's superiors watch her closely.

I loved Kate, she starts out shaky but she fights back and you can't help but cheer her on.

Carol Wyer always leaves wanting more at the end of the story and this book is no exception.

I look forward to reading the next book in the Kate Young series and watch her grow as a character.

It’s been cleverly written with a complex plot that I found confusing at first, with lots of drama, suspense and twists and turns, the most massive and shocking twist coming three-quarters of the way through the story that explained Kate’s actions making them clear and understandable. I like Kate’s character as she’s tenacious, determined and fair to her colleagues, and I’m looking forward to how she develops in the second of the series. I’ve enjoyed reading this thriller which I can wholeheartedly recommend to anyone who loves an exciting, addictive and action-packed thriller.

The plot-

Detective Kate young who was on leave of absence is suddenly called back to work to investigate🔍 a high profile murder case which is connected to her past...

The author @carolwyer has described the scenes, characters very well..the clues or investigation comes out step by step leading to a perfect mixture of suspense and mystery which keeps us guessing throughout!
The mental dilema which Kate undergoes is also quite palpable..
One wants to read the next one in the series to see how kate will expose her superiors!
Awaiting the next one!!

The prolific Carol Wyer returns with An Eye for an Eye which is the first book in a new series starring DI Kate Young and based on the story I have read this is going to be another winner.

Young is recovering from a work trauma that is revealed throughout the book whilst thrown into a complex and difficult murder investigation upon her return to work.

The story moves along at a good pace and keeps the pages turning as the twists and turns keep coming at you the reader.

Definitely recommended and I look forward to book number two.

An Eye For An Eye is the first in the DI Kate Young series and having read a couple of Carol's other books, I was intrigued to see how Kate measured up to the other detectives.

Kate is a damaged woman. Taking pills to hide from her pain but the trauma still manages to manifest itself with flashbacks that plague her day-to-day life. I really rooted for her through the story, hoping that she'd pull through and catch the bad guy.

As someone who reads a lot of crime fiction, it's difficult to surprise me, but the killing method in this book certainly did! I'm not going to give it away, don't worry, but it is one of the most clever and vindictive that I've come across in a while.

There were a few aspects of the story that weren't a huge shocker for me, but I still enjoyed watching things unfold in front of me.

I think this novel sets up the series nicely, and I think it will only get stronger as the series goes along.

This is a police procedural with a DI that's dealing with a personal tragedy. The reader figures out pretty quickly what's going on with Kate, but she doesn't know. Kate and team move from lead to lead. There are lots of clues and you'll probably guess the killer and why (especially if you read a lot of crime fiction) but Wyer makes it an wild journey to get there. One thing to keep in mind about many of the characters in this book - "Everybody lies!"

There's a bit of set-up for the next book. Looking forward to seeing where Wyer takes this new character. Fans of crime fiction should definitely check out An Eye for an Eye.

I didn’t think I would enjoy this as how could any detective live up to Natalie Ward or Robyn Carter? The author had surpassed herself with the writing of these two characters; how could any new one live up to such high standards?
She does!
At first, I thought there were too many similarities between Kate and Robyn. She has a tragic past and often imagines her partner’s advice. However, as the book progresses, you realise there is something more similar about the two, but at the same time, they couldn’t be further apart. I guessed the main character’s twist at about 30% of the way into the book, but I think by ‘knowing’ it made it more interesting to see if I was right with my guess.
The small tidbits given about the train massacre are real teasers, just when you think you are getting more detail that slight reminiscence is snatched away and you are left wanting more. At first, I couldn’t understand why this one event had such a profound impact on Kate's life. However, as the details emerge, I felt like crying for her. It was beautifully accomplished and written that you really feel for the character after not long knowing her!
The investigation that Kate is involved in was just utterly brilliant. It was so horrific and detailed that it made me start questioning the author’s mentality once again. This is precisely the kind of gruesome horror you want from a crime book. It was just perfect. It was all very intricately woven together as well, even though I did guess who the killer was, I didn’t know why and it was still great being along for the ride.
About 60% of the way into the book, it really picks up speed, and I just couldn’t put it down, I needed to know how everything would unfold and what answers we would get. There is certainly a set up for future books, and a bigger story that I can see is going to be interwoven into the series. I am really looking forward to what else Kate Young has to offer. Despite my reservations, she has overtaken Robyn Carter in my favourite characters of Carol Wyer’s books (Natalie Ward is still at the top, but I think that is all down to ‘The Blossom Twins’, can anything ever top that?!?)

An Eye For An Eye by Carole Wyer is a new series with DI Kate Young. A story that definitely got my heart pumping and my mind working overtime, and this is just the beginning!
Kate's life used to be pretty good. She had sucessfully followed in her late father's footsteps, become a diligent, experienced police officer, trusted by her peers, and her husband was the best thing which had ever happened to her. Then she attended a callout that took her to the brink and we meet her now on medication but back in work due to another high profile murder case and her presence being requested by her bosses with instructions to get the job done quickly and quietly as possible.
The murderer doesn't stop at one victim and soon the clues begin to point in the direction of people that she trusts. The question is, can she find the strength to catch this killer or is she too damaged from the past?
The story is told in present day with us being drip fed the horrific callout that caused Kate so much trauma that it still affects her to this day.
Carole Wyer knows how to spin an excellent story and this new series is no different at all. The reader is kept guessing about the killer until the end, always the best bit if you can't guess who it is so it's a surprise. I am so excited for the next book and what Kate gets up too.

Wow. I think this is a great and promising start to a new series. I loved reading this book and couldn’t help but empathise with and root for Kate, the main character. Following a personal trauma she returns to work to investigate a murder, not knowing who she can trust and her team doubting her ability to lead them. Kate is flawed, troubled, tenacious and strong willed. And determined to find the murderer. I thought this was a fast paced, well written and thrilling read that takes place over a short period of time. I loved the author’s writing style here and guessed the murderer correctly although I didn’t know why. All was revealed towards the end and I look forward to the next book.

Wow what a fabulous start to a new series! This story had me riveted to the page, in particular the second half of the book which was full of action, tension and twists. I read it in one sitting as I had a really hard time putting it down. This is Carol Wyer at her best it was bloody brilliant and totally deserves five stars.

Having enjoyed previous series by this excellent writer, I was looking forward to this new strand and what a start! It features DI Kate Young, a very troubled cop following her involvement in a particularly shocking crime and only just returning to work. The case assigned to her is fascinating and she is tasked with working out what links a series of victims and trying to prevent future atrocities. An engrossing start to this series and I look forward eagerly to number 2.

What a cliff hanger... I’ve literally just finished this book and gasped so so loud! I’ve just started Carol Wyers other series of books so was pleased to try the first one of a new series!

A great story line. I enjoyed Kate and her back story and the other people working with her! I guessed the culprit at 83% but really wasn’t expecting the cliff hanger.... roll on book two... I can’t wait!!!!!!!

There is definitely quite a few twists in this story.

An Eye for and Eye -. A Detective trying to solve a case with a murderer running rings around everyone, while battling her own issues made for a great read. I must admit, I did cotton on to one twist pretty early on,, which made for predictable reading, however the actual murder itself remained unsolved for me up until the very end. I loved (if that is the right way to describe it!) the murder method, something very left field and not like any I have come across before.

The book was real written and fast moving , with the introduction of many characters to throw the reader off the scent and a great marriage of two story lines. I found Kate to be fabulous, and really doing the best she can with her mental state, something that was sympathetically written, without making her out to be achieving more than someone realistically could in her state. I felt for her, trying to keep her head above water and I found her to be relatable.

I look forward to reading more about Detective Kate and would love to see her developed into a TV show.

As a huge Forensic Files fan, I was curious to see if this one would live up to explain and it did not let me down! The murders were told vividly but not so graphic that you can’t keep reading. Well done!
Kate is an investigator in England who was been called back to duty after some family issues have forced her to take leave. She comes back at the request of the Superintendent of Police, who wants her to work the case, but doesn’t want to work with her or give her any more information than he has to. A serial killer is taking down people one by one and unless Kate can put the past behind her and focus on the case at hand, the killer may go free.

This isn’t my first book by this author and I loved her last one so couldn’t resist this one. Great promise in the blurb and I’m a sucker for any police procedural storylines. I also love a strong female character which DI Kate Young is. I also loved the dynamic within the investigative team. I’m fairly good for guessing aspects of a storyline or being able to predict the conclusion but this one was a little different as from a quarter way in I knew what was coming and not in the way of some details but everything. It was such a pity as it really had such potential for the suspense and shock factor but unfortunately it was hard not to predict as it was so obvious. Having said that I continued as I did want to see was I right in my predictions and maybe I was in for a shock. It won’t stop me reading the next in the series as it’s really been left open and has caught my interest but I just hope it won’t be written in the same way. Good read just very predictable.

An Eye for an Eye is the first book in the Detective Kate Young series. Overall I enjoyed the book. The plot itself was compelling and kept my interest throughout. However, I was able to guess the killer early on in the book, and from reading reviews, others did too. I did have a couple of other issues with the book. I did not feel any chemistry between Detective Kate Young and her team members (which was only two other people). Half the time they couldn't even reach each other on the phone or they were talking about another behind their back. But my biggest gripe was the Chris twist. Yeah I was able to figure it out before the reveal but it sure was confusing in the beginning.

I very much enjoyed this book. It has a good story and excellent main characters. I would definately recommend this book.

An interesting premise - a police detective dealing with PTSD while trying to work, but I had too many issues with the book to give it more stars.

The book is supposed to be set in 2021, but the dates don't align. The 2nd of January was not a Tuesday this year and other dates don't work with this year. Also, if it's this year why is there zero mention of Covid?

Kate gets rid of her medication in one scene - she hates her dependency on it, but she has zero withdrawal symptoms and no regrets. Seems unrealistic to me.

But unrealistic is the centerpiece of much of this novel. Two DS who are in their early 20s? Sure it happens, but seems unlikely especially when our DI is also young.

I did get at times get really caught up in the story, but I'd say skip this one. There are others that are far better written and much more realistic.

This was my first time reading one of Carol Wyer’s books which I found on NetGallery. Let me tell you,
I was not disappointed at all. This story had multiple turns and multiple different leads. It kept me guessing throughout and I loved having different parts and flashbacks in it to make you get a real perspective of Kate, the female police officer. This differs from the other crime and mystery books I’ve read as it followers the detectives point and I absolutely loved it!! I can’t wait to for a follow on book from this. Straight up 5/5!!

This is an excellent thriller by Carol Wyer featuring D.I. Kate Young who is investigating the murder of a tortured man. She has been off work following the killing of many people in a carriage on a train when her husband was shot. This put is one that you cannot put down, and I thoroughly enjoyed it and would recommend it to anyone who loves a good thriller that keeps you enthralled until the last pages.

I've read and loved both of this author's other series so was slightly disappointed with this offering. Maybe it's simply due to building new characters but I found the plot rather weak and predictable. The husband storyline was obvious from the outset and the constant flashbacks became quite tedious. I hope to see this new series evolve to be as good as the others

I usually love this author's books but I wasn't able to really get into this one. The pacing is slow and the story often felt disjointed. I figured out the stuff with Chris very early in the book. The case was interesting but it didn't hold my attention. The best part of the book was the very end. I would probably give the next one a try just because I like the author.

This book took me far longer to read than it should have and that to me suggests I didn’t enjoy it as much as I should have.

Plot wise, this book started out with great promise. There’s no denying that Wyer is an impressive wordsmith (I found myself using the dictionary function in practically ever chapter!) but it was questionable at times as to whether these impressive words added anything to the narrative or simply over complicated and restricted the natural flow.

There’s a quite a few twists and turns in this book but sadly I found them a bit too obvious. Firstly through the way in which they were set up and secondly because there are the most common in this genre.

I never felt like I truly connected with Kate. So much of her recent history dictates her current personality and choices that she felt a little diluted.

Overall it’s an enjoyable read but nothing groundbreaking or remarkable. I’d certainly try another of this authors books but this one wasn’t my favourite.

I loved this book! Got me hooked from the beginning and, although I could guess both the killer and the 'husband's thing' quite early, it didn't make the read less enjoyable. The writing is exceptionally good, the plot is very catching, a great read!
The open ending left me eager to read more about DI Young and what is going to happen next and I'll definitely have a look at other Carol Wyer's books in the meantime, since this was my first one.
I need more Carol Wyer in my life!
