Description

“If you could stop all of this, would you?” the hero asked.

Randrum knelt before the hero, who was adorned in his bloodstained armor. That armor had once been bright and gleaming, but no longer. Randrum only lifted his eyes, too weak to stand. He hardly noticed the blood red snow, or the still bodies around them, which he himself would soon join.

“Of course I would… but it’s too late,” Randrum said before going into a fit of coughing. Once he recovered somewhat he raised his eyes to meet the hero’s gaze. “No one can turn back the hands of time….”

The hero crouched down before Randrum, still holding his gaze. “But what if one could?”

Randrum licked his lips. The blood loss must have been getting to him. He actually considered the question, even though it was impossible. “If it were… possible… I would sacrifice anything to change this.”

The hero smiled and held out his hand. “'That’ is the right answer.”

Randrum hesitated, then reached for that hand.

If a murderer was given the choice between death and becoming a hero, something so contrary to everything they know, would they? Even if they did, could they actually change? Could they fight their nature and become a true hero?

“If you could stop all of this, would you?” the hero asked.

Randrum knelt before the hero, who was adorned in his bloodstained armor. That armor had once been bright and gleaming, but no longer...

This book is definitely a promising start to what could be an amazing series. While the plot is somewhat stereotypical, and very common in fantasy books, the characters really save the book. Every one reads differently, and I'm interested in learning more about all of them. This book also has some super unique concepts that I'm excited to see expanded.

Omeron follows Jaron, a man tasked with fulfilling the prophecies regarding the Hero of Time. These prophecies seem to contradict his very nature, and the fate of the world rests upon his shoulders. Can a murderer change his ways and become the hero the world needs?

One of the things that made me enjoy this book so much has to be the uniqueness of some of the ideas it includes, the most important being the naming system. I love the idea of the first letter of a character's name reflecting their personality, it added a super neat element. It made it much easier to separate the characters, and gave us early insight into their personality. I'd never seen this idea before, so I really loved it.

Another thing I have to compliment the author on is his amazing battle scenes. These would often last several pages, but they were super enjoyable. I felt like I was at the battle, fighting right beside the characters. Each character had a unique fighting style, so it was super entertaining to learn more about the character through the battles.

Finally, although it played a very small part, I loved the relationship between Lon and Cawreen. Ever since she was introduced, I was super interested in Cawreen, but that interest only grew as we learned more about her. I'm hoping that her and Lon get closer in the net book, because there's definite potential between them.

I do have to sa that the ending of this felt a bit abrupt and rushed, so I do wish this book was a bit longer. Despite that, I really enjoyed the book, and am excited to see where the series is going to go!

Note: I received a free prepublication ARC of Omeron by Alexander Davis to read and review.

Omeron is subtitled “ The Hero’s Chronicle. Each chapter’s heading is presented as an entry in this Chronicle, acting as continuity for the tale.. The book flows nicely along, with the plot advancing and further illuminating the two primary characters, Jarod, a mercenary and REN, , a bit of a scholar. Both young men are fascinated by the hero myth of a man-god who will save the world from the forces of destruction . Unfortunately, the Hero stories also vaguely hint that the Hero may also be the cause of that destruction.
At the beginning of the novel, the two men are racing to join the fight against the Zveron, a animalistic, violent race of near demons, who are besieging the city of Noctine. What happens there , without getting too deeply into the fascinating details, is the impetus for all that follows. A figure named Randrum, who may be the “ Hero of the Legends” is confronted by the Queen of the dark forces, and killed in an epic battle. Enigmatically, she confronts a badly wounded Jarod and sends him two years back in time with a clean slate to begin the fight all over, perhaps as the new Hero of The Legends.
That is what the remainder of the novel is about: Jerod’s journey to find if the Hero myth is true or not and if he is that man. The author does not spend much time on world building description, rather he lets the reader see the landscape and cities as Jerod sees them on his Travels. In the different cities of this world, we encounter different customs and traditions that affect the story line. We also meet new characters along the way, some important to the tale and learn about them as he meets them. I felt that this wayside a good way to keep the reader’s attention from wandering on long paragraphs of exposition .
I thought the book was enjoyable and well- written it is certainly earns a four star rating and my recommendation as a good read in the fantasy genre. I like my fantasy novels without fey elves, grumpy dwarves, or teen age heroes and princesses, and none of them are present. So far...the book has a more to come in the next book ending. This was a bit of a disappointment, but I liked the book enough to get the next book by Mr. Davis to find out who the Hero of myth turns out to be.
This was a pre-pub reader copy. There were some spelling errors ( your for you’re,e.g., ) and syntax errors, both of which may have been autocorrect problems
Cautions: no bad language, no sex, but not really young adult, either.

Omeron is the first book in a new series that showcases a wonderful set of characters that will keep readers coming back for more. The idea of the 'Hero Legend' is intriguing and the created epigraphs show a well-thought-out concept that draws readers into the world of Omeron. The main character fits the profile of an anti-hero more than a hero but becomes linked to the Hero Legend through his love for his best friend. The smaller supporting characters being built up to play a (presumably larger) role later on in the continuum are delightful and will definitely have you coming back for Book 2.

This is a pre-publication edition, and so there are many errors in this version that should hopefully be cleared up before publication. They are distracting, but can't even pull this English teacher away from the story!
