Raven awakens from death. Her family is dead. She is hurled into a world of vampires and hunters.

Raven’s family was celebrating her birthday. A bittersweet night as her father was soon to join the fight for the American Revolution. A knock at the door changed everything.

This is book 1 in this series.

Raven is the main female character and she's written very well throughout the whole story. Her character develops from a human into a week vampire then into a strong vampire. It kept me interested in the story.

The side characters also bring intrigue into the storyline.

For a vampire book its written really well and its not cliche like normal stories in this genre.

Birth into darkness by W.J.R. Parks.

BIRTH INTO DARKNESS by WJR Parks is an interesting read. I really liked Raven’s story of becoming a vampire and the adventures that happen in the short time after. She goes from enjoying her 13th birthday with family, to being turned into a vampire, to being caged and trained to hunt vampires. She tries to make friends and hold onto her humanity, which is at odds with the monster she is to become.

The vampire myth is a little different in how they’re made and what their powers can be. Also, they call themselves Lilin, not vampires. The mythology has links to Lilith and Dracula. There are also Angels and chiriphim (warriors of God).

The majority of the book is a flashback. The prequel and last chapter are set in the present time. The last chapter does have me asking a couple of questions that will probably be answered in the next book, but I think the book would have had the same positive impact on me without the present-day excerpts.
I only had one small issue with the book. The people in 1776 use a lot of current speak (ie: Nathaniel asking Raven, “Are you good?”) Then Elspet uses (I believe) a Celtic accent. I think her background could’ve been explained a little more and then some of the vernacular could have been dropped for easier reading.

I am looking forward to seeing how Raven continues to grow, how she and her new little family survive after the huge battle that was waged, and if she gets to tell James what she really thinks of him. She’s a smart girl. We know she’s lived through a lot and still thrives today thanks to the beginning and end of the book.

WJR Parks has more books set in this world, and I’m looking forward to reading more.

I received a copy of this book for a fair and honest review. I am always up for a good vampire book and this one a little different then some. They are called Lilin instead. The main character is Raven who is a human girl celebrating with family before she is turned into a vampire. She taken way and caged and trained to hunt Lilin by warriors for God. She is doing her best to hold on to her humanity and survive but she struggles with what she is becoming. She starts out weak but grows in strength. I was left with a few questions but this is only the first book.

I enjoyed this paranormal story. This is a new author for me and I look forward to reading more in the future. This is a well develop story that has characters that bring the story to life. The author's attention to details made the story feel realistic as if I was right there with the characters. I really enjoyed the characters and what they bring to the story. This is an engaging story that I read in one sitting. The characters are connectable and made the story fun to read. This is a story about Raven and her fight between humanity and immorality. She is left with questions, I highly recommend reading this book to find out what happens to her.

This was a pretty good book. I really liked Raven. I don’t get many books, especially paranormal, that start in the Revolutionary War era. I appreciated that change. I enjoyed the book from start to finish. I really liked following Raven on her journey, adjusting to being a vampire and being trained to hunt vampires and beyond. I can’t wait to read the next book. I recommend.
