Medicinal Herbs for Immune Defense: 104 Trusted Recipes for Fighting Colds, Flus, Fevers, and More by JJ Pursell
Publisher: Timber Press
Genre: Health, Mind & Body
Release Date: 02 Feb 2021

Medicinal Herbs for Immune Defense by JJ Pursell is a great resource for identifying herbs to boost your immune system naturally.

There are instructions of how to make your own capsules, essential oil blends, fomentations, liniments, medicinal teas and more.

Each herb described includes a picture, as well the benefits and which parts are used.

The recipes are broken into different topics, such as Allergies, Chest Colds, Coughs, Cuts & Scrapes, Earaches, Fevers, Immune Boost, Laryngitis, Sinus Relief, Sore Throat and so much more.

I found this book to be fascinating and I look forward to trying some of the recipes. If I could relieve my allergies without the need of 3 prescription medications I would be so happy!

This is a great resource and I recommend it to anyone looking for information on natural remedies and immune support.

I'm so grateful to JJ Pursell, Timber Press, and NetGalley for providing me with a free copy of this ARC ebook in exchange for my honest review.

I think this is a resource that I will dip into many times. No time like the present with Covid 19 here to learn more about ways to boost our immune system and fight pathogens. The book is well organised with recipes and illustrations covering many ailments.

This book is a great resource for identifying herbs to boost your immune system naturally. It would be a helpful research book for your bookshelf.

There are instructions of how to make your own capsules, essential oil blends, medicinal teas and more. I personally would probably not try the recipes myself as I am not sure I would get all the information correct. I guess I would rely on a real herbalist.

There are great pictures of the herbs and descriptions of them. They are helpful to anyone who grows herbs or is researching information.

This is a great resource and I recommend it to anyone looking for information on herbs and using them to benefit your health.

Thanks to JJ Pursell, Timber Press, and NetGalley for providing me with a free copy of this ARC ebook in exchange for my honest review

f you’ve ever thought about creating your own medicinal items in your kitchen but didn’t know where to begin, then this book is just what you need.

Medicinal Herbs for Immune Defense has 104 recipes for all sorts of ailments that you can create at home using things you can grow in your garden. Pursell talks in detail about 60 essential herbs and plants that go into the many recipes, but she also states that if you concentrate on say 20, really get to know them then you’ll have the information you need to really create a preparation unique to your circumstance – if you know how an herb performs and what it can do you’re equipped to make something useful.

The 60 herbs and plants have pictures, the common and scientific names, and what parts of the plant is used in medicine (like the flowers, petals, rhizomes or roots, leaves, stems, bark, seeds, berries, the whole plant, the fruit, etc.)

What do you do with the plants? You make the preparations. I loved how the author describes each and details how they are prepared. This is a highly useful book for taking care of ailments and sickness using things you have in the garden or can get in nature. I think it should be in everyone’s library.

A very complete guide for boosting the immune system with herbs by a herborist. I really liked how the book was divided first into the type of ways the herbs can be used, ie capsules, tea, poultice, salves, oils... Then we have a long list of plants and their properties. I am a rather rational person, so I had mixed feelings for that section which mixed together physical effects, like liver cleanser, with emotional ones, like keeping someone always in the clouds grounded. And then we get the recipes in function of the symptoms. They usually take quite a lot of different herbs and an elaborate process, so be prepared to be very dedicated. I think a home "cook" would have trouble to have at hand all the needed ingredients. I think some of the recipes are a little too complicated (for example, I know a simple sea salt and water solution works wonders for conjunctivitis rather than a 4 herb bland). But I haven't tried any of the recipes, so it is impossible for me to say how effective I find them. They sound carefully thought out and trialed, but too complicated for me.

Move through March with medicinal herbs

Posted on March 18, 2021 by michellelovatosbookreviews, world's first book color commentator, book reviews with a twist

Winter isn’t fun, even here in the sunny Southern California desert. Wind. It is an ice-cold, slicing mirage fooling experienced desert rats like me to walk out the door without a parka and into a sunny heatless atmospheric blast of reality. It’s a trickster that convinces my sense of logic to present me coatless and practically naked to its fierce raping assault. By the end of the season, I feel like a ham steak, and a body-builder made strong by opening my car door and dashing across the Walmart parking lot, all the while knowing it’s easier to run fast than prepare ahead of time and wear my coat. Especially since it was warm moments ago in the car.
Oh, boo hoo to me. My friends in Montana endured below-freezing air, ice, snow, and dagger-wind for days that kept them from opening their doors and crossing their patios.
Regardless, Medicinal Herbs for Immune Defense: 104 Trusted Recipes for Fighting Colds, Flus, Fevers, and more is one of those books that falls into the “Better Late Than Never” category in my assessment of titles that could have made the difference during winter.
The good news is, however, that next winter looms three seasons into the future and we’ll face the same challenges again, with bodies another year older, wiser, and in my case, perhaps weaker.
I consider Medicinal Herbs for Immune Defense a cookbook as valuable as any other on my shelf. Its concoctions can save me a trip out the door, into traffic, and through a waiting-room experience watching nasal plumbing issues and questionable internal disorders.
Author JJ Pursell, and Timber Press, introduce this holistic health title with the reminder that COVID 19 brought the clear need for additional education in this ancient health healing system. Let’s take a look.
Step one: Learn the basics. The fastest-acting medicinal herb remedy exists in the form of a liquid tincture. Ingesting a concoction in the form of warm tea will soothe a completely different area of disturbance. Rubbing herbs on an affected wound is appropriate for its own set of issues. And on, and on we go.
Pursell introduces how to make master mixtures, how to create customized recipes for customized problems, and how to stock your shelves with items that are ready and waiting to heal your ailing body.
I wish this title was not electronic and expiring in six days. This is one of those titles I need on my shelf … at the ready, all the time – like stocking the cupboard with sugar, flour, rice, and beans.
I am an enormous fan of aromatherapy, which is a great excuse to buy candles – SOY WAX PLEASE – as well as essential oils. I have my favorite high-end brand I won’t name for fear of alienating lovers of competing brands. But in my opinion, pure essential oils are priceless in the effort to combat the ails that push all of our health cycles downward.
As far as herbs go, however, Medicinal Herbs for Immune Defense, its master recipes, and listed remedy concoctions make this book another foundational title for my shelves.
Like other cookbooks on the market, Medicinal Herbs goes through the standard routine of stocking shelves with proper ingredients and tools, herbs, and other miscellaneous items needed to succeed. It explains the more intricate delicacies of creation methods and ingestion. It offers a mini-Bible of recommended herbs, and frankly, a lot of these plants are commonly available, and likely wandering around in your garden.
Who knew roses were considered herbal medicine? I know it’s one of my favorite scents. It inspires my smile when it wafts into my nose since it reminds me of my youngest daughter who says rose smell means “old lady.” Ok. I’ll accept that.
Medicinal Herbs for Immune Defense will forever mark this COVID-19 ground-zero period in history, as its author directly addresses this deadly, invisible assassin’s effect on humanity.
Allergy treatments, anti-viral treatments, breathing treatments, all headline this essential health book. I suspect an herbal medicine fan could likely find many of these recipes in a variety of sources other than between these two covers, considering the age of this successful treatment method, but why? This title covers almost everything that’s ailed me through the years.
Get this Bible and let it decorate your shelves. When you get sick, grab it, use it and get well. You will do yourself a favor – and you might just teach your children that ancient medicine is often just as good, or better than the latest hot pink pill they are about to pop.

A fabulous book to learn from in order to help your immune system. It’s nicely illustrated with the plants used in the recipes which include syrups, tinctures and salves. It’s the kind of book you’d keep on your shelf for future reference as it’s far to extensive to remember all the content.

This book is absolute GOLD for self healing and for natural safe remedies at home. I absolutely loved the outline where the author begins by listing and describing each type of remedy first, then herbs/plants and their functionality, and finishing off with all of the amazing recipes for different ailments. I especially loved the section on remedies for children as it is so important to be able to treat minor things at home instead of unnecessary prescription drugs that doctors tend to so easily dispense merely for a runny nose. I also find this resource invaluable for myself as a health coach who is often asked about natural easy home remedies for stomachaches or rashes and such. I can't wait to go purchase this in print!

Medicinal Herbs for Immune Defense. By J.J. Pursell. 2021. Timber Press (ARC eBook).

I solid reference for beginners. Brief descriptions and pictures of herbs and their uses make up the first half of the book. And the remaining part provides recipes for conditions, including a separate section for treatments of the ailments of children.
