Description

Lawyer Andy Carpenter and his golden retriever, Tara, work to free a man who risked it all to help a dog in need

Lawyer Andy Carpenter and his wife, Laurie, enjoy walking their dogs, Tara and Sebastian. By this point in their marriage, it’s routine. When out for one of their strolls, their simple ritual isn’t so simple anymore. Across the street, a man is mistreating his dog. Three things happen at once: Andy yells, Laurie runs to stop the abuse, and so does a closer passerby, who so thoroughly beats the owner that both are arrested when the cops arrive.

Andy scoops up the dog and takes him to the Tara Foundation, the dog rescue organization that’s always been his true passion. Meanwhile, at the police station, the passerby is identified as Matthew Jantzen, and he’s wanted for murder. Andy and Laurie are struck by the fact that Jantzen, a man on the run, would nevertheless intervene to help a dog, and decide to find out more.

Dog Eat Dog, the twenty-second installment in the Andy Carpenter series, features the charming cast of characters - old and new - that David Rosenfelt is known for and the dogs that accompany them.

This is another solid book with pleny of shady characters, lots of dogs (Rosenfelt loves dogs) and pleny of laughs to go around.

Andy and Laurie are out for a walk with their dogs and come across a man kicking his dog. Laurie takes off to save the wee pug, but another man beats her to it. When the police arrive, everyone shares that Matt Jantzen was saving the dog from abuse and that the man he punched out started the fight and Matt was merely defending himself. But the police take both men into custody as Matt is wanted for murder in Maine. Laurie takes the pug while Andy takes Matt’s case. Road trip to Maine!

For an attorney that doesn’t want new clients, Andy finds himself completely immersed in Matt’s case and believes in his innocence. But it’s going to be a long road ahead of them with the evidence the police have. Andy and the team need to find the true murderer without losing anyone on their team. Another case for the semi retired attorney who can’t seem to leave the courthouse behind.

There’s a reason this series has run so long…it’s awesome! If Janet Evanovich were a man with her snarky writing and comebacks, she’d be David Rosenfelt. I love this series and the dogs are a big part of it. I can never get enough of this series!

If you have any questions about how great this series is, just know that this is number 23 in this series and all the books are still getting 5 star reviews. These books are full of humor, have a great plot, and the dogs just steal the whole story. Wonderful series

I would like to thank NetGalley and st. Martin’s press for giving me the opportunity to read an advance copy of this book. This is another great Andy Carpenter novel with a great surprise ending. The story starts with Andy and his wife walking their dogs when they come across two men in a fist fight. Andy who is a defense attorney ends up representing one of the men who is accused of murder. This book is very well worth reading and I would strongly recommend it.

Dog Eat Dog by David Rosenfelt is the 23rd book in the Andy Carpenter series. Every time I read an Andy Carpenter book it's like reuniting with old friends. I know that there will be a great story with Andy, Laurie, and their team; along with the beloved dogs.
Andy and Laurie are walking their dogs when they come across a man abusing a small dog. Laurie is about to intervene when a man (the hero) comes out of nowhere and takes the abuser to the ground. The police are called and the hero and abuser are taken into custody. Our hero’s name is Matt Jantzen and the police find that a murder warrant was issued from the state of Maine for Matt. Matt is arrested and extradited to Maine. Because of Matt’s heroic actions with the dog incident, Andy decides to be his lawyer. The whole gang relocates to Maine to work the case as this becomes an uphill battle. Matt’s DNA is found at the crime scene. As Andy develops Matt’s defense, he uncovers other crimes that involve the local militia and drug operations that interest the FBI. I love the series and can’t wait for book 24. Thank you, NetGalley and St. Martin’s Press for this ARC.

I always look forward to the next book in the Andy Carpenter series, as do the patrons at our library. As Andy and Laurie are walking their dogs they come across a man abusing his dog. Before they can rescue the animal another man, Matt Jantzen, comes forward, beats the man and saves the dog. Taken into custody it’s learned he’s wanted for murder in Maine. Andy, who loathes to work, finds himself wanting to defend Jantzen, because after all Jantzen is a dog lover who risked everything to help the dog. So off to Maine he goes.
Reading this series is always a breath of fresh air. Andy’s irreverent humor makes me laugh out loud and puts a smile on my face, along with characters I’ve grown to love that feel like family, great plots, and of course, dogs!
I’ve never met anyone who doesn’t love this series, and each book is a s strong as the last. May they continue forever.

Thanks to Netgalley and St. Martin's Press for providing this ARC in exchange for an honest review.

When reluctant lawyer Andy Carpenter and his investigator wife Laurie are out walking their dogs they encounter a man who is kicking his pug. Laurie and another man intervene. The police come and find the man who intervened is wanted for a double murder in Maine. Andy can't believe a man who would come to a dog's rescue could be a murderer and of course he winds up on the case.

4.5 stars.

This one gets rounded up to 5 stars because you always get bonus points for being a dog lover and making them a big part of your books. David Rosenfelt manages to write a good mystery and inject it with humor, a great cast of characters and of course dogs. This was a good quick read and I loved the Rosenfelt cameo. This is a great series and I look forward to future installments.

Just started reading Dog Eat Dog and could not put it down until the end.

The story is about Laurie and Andy a lawyer who are walking their dog and com upon a man beating his dog. The abuser Matt is wanted for a double murder. Needless to say he is a dangerous man.

The story is not what it seems and it has enough twists and turns to keep you entertained.

Very well-crafted characters and quite an enjoyable storyline.

Highly recommend.

"It's too early for Christmas" but it's never too early for an addition to the Andy Carpenter series! Dog Eat Dog is another robust Rosenfelt mystery. Yes, it's witty. Yes, it's charming. Yes, it's engaging. After all, this is an Andy Carpenter adventure we're talking about. I appreciate how Rosenfelt keeps the series fresh by introducing new characters and new locations. This one features the Traveling Roadshow edition of the Andy Carpenter law practice as they move from New Jersey to Maine. It also reads like a thriller at times. Rosenfelt displays a deft touch as he weaves this terrific tale. The raillery between Carpenter and his co-counsel is delightful. Heck, we even learn the identity of a writer Laurie Collins enjoys! So, run (or walk your dog) to the nearest bookstore and grab this one on the day of release. You'll be happy you did. Thank you to St..Martin's Press, Minotaur Books, and NetGalley for the advance reading copy. #DogEatDog #NetGalley

No way this could be an unbiased review. I love Andy Carpenter's world with all the dogs, the complicated interesting characters, the excellent plots, and, in these days of a virus, the snarkiness and all the laughs. Andy Carpenter is the snarkiest un lawyer you'll ever meet. His greatest fans are dogs, his wife(a private investigator and former homicide lieutenant with lots of connections), and his son. Andy is a defense lawyer who (sort of) picks his cases, hates going to court, and always wins for the good guys (his clients). But still each book can stand alone.
Who knew that coming to the rescue of a dog being beaten by his owner could wind up taking Andy and another defender to Maine to defend the defender in what seems to be a hopeless two year old case in which the clueless guy's blood was present at the murder scene. The story involves lobster rolls and Andy's whole team plus the State police and the FBI. Positively riveting!
I requested and received a free temporary ebook copy from St. Martin's Press/Minotaur Books via NetGalley. Thank you!

This is book 23 in the Andy Carpenter Novel series. It works well as a standalone; although, I believe, most people will enjoy it so much that they really won't wan't to read just one.

I'll admit, I like dogs, but I am really more of a cat person. Show me a cover with a cat on the front, and I will stop and take a second look every time to see what it's about. I'm not sure what attracted me to this series in the first place, but I love it so much, I'm glad I took the time to check it out.

The author, David Rosenfelt, has populated this series with an intriguing cast of characters, and they make these stories so very appealing. The main character, Andy, is a wealthy lawyer. He has so much money he doesn't really need to work, but he somehow manages to end up taking cases defending people who would probably end up in jail without him. His team then sets off to find out who the guilty party really is. His wife is an ex-cop, as is Corey, one of the people who works for him. Sam, another member of his team, is a computer guy who can hack into almost anything and Marcus is someone you definitely want on your side as he can walk as quietly as a cat, and take out the bad guys with a single punch.

All in all, there is always a lot of action in these books, and a satisfying conclusion by the end.

Some of the “Andy Crew” is back along with new dog added to the family. You have to love Rosenfelt’s books - they’re quick reads, good mysteries, of course dogs are always a part - but mostly Rosenfelt’s humor & poking fun at himself! I loved the part where Andy’s wife sees her favorite author in a restaurant - who other than David Rosenfelt - you will laugh when you read what Andy says.

David Rosenfelt has done it again! The newest book in the Andy Carpenter series brings back the same wit, intrigue, and charm we’ve come to expect. While getting out of Patterson, NJ offers a new set of complications for Andy, his team is there to help him fight for his client!

Every time David Rosenfelt releases a new book in his Andy Carpenter series, I race to get my hands on it. Dog Eat Dog is a joy to read, with a smart plot and the fun characters we have come to expect in the Andy Carpenter series.

Andy Carpenter is the sarcastic, funny defense lawyer who would rather watch football or walk his dogs than work. But, when Andy witnesses a stranger rescue a dog only to subsequently get arrested for a previously unsolved double murder, he has to put on his lawyer hat, follow the case to Maine, and get to work.

Because the case takes place in Maine, we are missing some of the usual characters from this series, but we gain lots of lobster rolls. The book is filled with plenty of research and investigating, a little danger, lots of witty comebacks and sarcastic replies, and - the best part - some very smart plotting involving DNA evidence.

As always, this book can be read by itself, although the series is so wonderful, I highly recommend reading all of the Andy Carpenter books. The characters are like familiar friends, and I look forward to meeting them again soon.

Thank you to NetGalley, Mr Rosenfelt, and St. Martin's Press for an advanced copy of this book in exchange for my honest review.

This is a Mystery, and this is the 23rd book in the Andy Carpenter series. I just love this book series. Andy is a lawyer, and he loves dogs. There is a lot with dogs worked in this book which makes this book so much better. The characters in this book is so great, but Andy is everything in this book. The character, Andy has dry humor which is funny as well. This book was fun, and I could not put it down. I loved it so much. Let me just say the cover is so very cute, and I would want to read it just because of the book cover. I was kindly provided an e-copy of this book by the publisher (Minotaur Books) or author (David Rosenfelt) via NetGalley, so I can give honest review about how I feel about this book. I want to send a big Thank you to them for that. This book is schedule to be release on July 6-2021.

David Rosenfelt is one of my top favourite mystery writers. Dog eat dog is full of mystery, humour and dogs. His books are interesting and funny, yet people keep getting murdered as they are trying to find the real killer. My favourite characters are Marcus and the dogs. Every book keeps you guessing right to the end about who the murderer is and I love the celebration party at the end of each book. Bravo David Rosenfelt👏👍📚❤️

I'm a true fan of David Rosenfelt. His Andy Carpenter character is always entertaining. This addition to the series is a fast paced, enjoyable trip to Maine (where Rosenfelt actually lives) to help another fellow dog lover out of a jam. The man is accused of a murder he didn't commit and Andy has to find a way to prove someone else is guilty, despite DNA evidence as proof. All Andy's helpers join him in Maine and work with him to solve the mystery, and Rosenfelt himself is even spotted in a local restaurant. Ad usual, he pulls out a win for his client in the end and all the dogs live happily ever after. The Andy Carpenter series is a hit every time.

Lawyer Andy Carpenter doesn't want to do any lawyering any more. But it seems that no matter how hard he tries to not take on a case , he ends up getting involved. And this story is no exception. Andy and his wife, Laurie, are out walking their dog when they see a man abusing a dog. They try to intervene but a passerby, Matthew, is closer and stops the man. However, Matthew who saved the dog ends up having a murder charge against him from two years ago. He tells Andy that he is innocent and in this case, Andy believes him. Now its just up to Andy and the team to find out who framed him for murder and why. I love the Andy Carpenter series by David Rosenfelt and Andy's wry wit. An enjoyable read that I could not put down.

I loved this book!

I secured a galley copy, and read it in just two days. Rosenfelt has developed such interesting characters, I feel as if I know them personally, and expect to run into them on the streets here in NJ, though this newest transports us to Maine, where the author has relocated. He perfectly captures the small-town, New England feel, while telling a captivating tale. While it begins with the rescue of a dog, as so many of his books do, the story takes a different turn from several of his others, introducing us to new challenges and criminal pursuits, and perhaps a new cast of characters -- will there be more opportunities for Andy and his family to travel to Maine? Perhaps they will summer there?

If you are a fan of David Rosenfelt's writing, you will enjoy this. If you have never read him, what are you waiting for!?

If only they made these books into a Netflix series, like Harlan Coben's have been. I think Saul Rubinek would be a perfect, if slightly older, Andy.

My only disappointment is that I have read all of his books :-(

This was my first Andy Carpenter book and I am going to hunt for earlier ones!

Andy Carpenter is a reluctant defense attorney whose pledge to help a man who jumped in to rescue a dog being being abused by its owner has led to living in Maine for the short term.

Andy, his wife Lauren, their teams of interesting characters all combine to make this a very good investigation. How do you prove DNA evidence placing Matt at the murder scene is false when the potential leads and witnesses have had 2 years to fade away?

Very entertaining and sometimes tongue in cheek scenes that made this a truly cozy mystery.

New Jersey lawyer Andy Carpenter and his his wife Laurie are taking the dogs for a walk one evening when they encounter a man beating his dog. As Laurie runs to defend the pup, another passerby, Matt Janzten, steps in. Following the altercation, Matt and the dog owner are taken into custody, while Andy and his wife end up with the dog. It turns out that Matt is wanted for murder in Maine, and since Andy doesn't believe anyone who would risk his own freedom to help a dog could be guilty of murder, he and his team are off to Maine to mount Matt's defense. They have their work cut out for them, however, as the prosecution;s key piece of evidence is Matt's blood, found on one of the victims, and DNA doesn't lie. Part of a series but easily read as a standalone, this is a well-crafted story full of David Rosenfelt's trademark wit, I quite enjoyed this book. And now I'm craving lobster rolls!

As always Andy, his pups, wife and cast of characters are both hilariously witty and an ensemble of well-developed characters. Even Marcus (whose speech is only understood by Andy’s wife)
The plot is full, intriguing and well planned by the author
Thank you netgalley and the publisher for this arc

oved it. Warning, it may cause chortles, guffaws, or even a snort. Not sure why but the writing reminded me of the Spenser series by Robert B. Parker. They were a favorite. Even the courtroom scenes were interesting. Appreciated noting the clue and happy when it was all revealed eventually. I look forward to more adventures with Andy and company, including the dogs. I need to find the time to read the ones I have missed..

First of all, how could you say no to such a cute cover? This is a great installment to the Andy Carpenter series. There’s a different setting which is a fun change, since Andy gets roped into defending a client in Maine. This particular client saved a dog from being abused by his owner, so of course it was hard for Andy to turn him down.

Our favorites are back, like Sam and Marcus, and I haven’t read The K Team yet but want to now since hearing about Simon the German Shepherd and Corey who investigate with Laurie.

It’s always high-stakes when trying to make sure an innocent person doesn’t go to jail for murder, and this case was no exception!

This series just gets better and better! I enjoyed the interesting mystery, the snarky humor, and the ongoing banter between all the characters. They feel like old friends. Just be prepared, after reading this book you will want a lobster roll! Three cute dogs, one great mystery, all the paws up!!
Thank you to NetGalley and St. Martin's Press for the opportunity to read and review this book.

David Rosenfelt has done it again! I have loved every single book in the Andy Carpenter series and his upcoming release, Dog Eat Dog was no exception. When lawyer Andy witnesses a good samaritan being arrested after helping a dog, he can't help but get involved. However, he does not realize just how intricate a case he just signed up for. With his client's blood found at the scene of a double homicide, can he prove his innocence to a jury? I love that you don't have to read these books in order as I skip around with them. There are always twists at the end and the whole way through you are sitting at the edge of your seat! I would definitely recommend this one to anyone looking for a great fast paced mystery! Dog Eat Dog comes out July 6th. Thank you @netgalley and @stmartinspress for the advance copy!

Another multi-layered (and at times for me laugh out loud) mystery by David Rosenfelt! Andy Carpenter may be a lawyer, but he doesn’t want to take any cases…ever. He is an excellent lawyer with a team who aide him when he is forced to accept a client. This time he is not forced, but his client rescued a dog that was being abused so Andy has no choice, he must defend a fellow dog lover. The man who saved the dog is wanted in another state for a double murder. He said he didn’t do it, so how did his DNA get on the hand of one of the victims? Andy enlists the aid of his team, including his wife, Laurie, a former Lieutenant with the Paterson P.D., and Marcus as the books would not be the same without Marcus. Will Andy uncover the twisted series of events that led to his client being unjustly accused of murder? When I read an Andy Carpenter mystery, I take the time to savor every word as Andy’s self-deprecating humor adds more than a bit of fun to the mystery. I received an advance review copy at no cost and without obligation for an honest review. (by paytonpuppy)

Read my full review on <a href=https://rosepointpublishing.com/2021/06/22/dog-eat-dog-an-andy-carpenter-mystery-andy-carpenter-novel-book-23-by-david-carpenter-bookreview-tuesdaybookblog/<a> Rosepoint Publishing.</a>

For those of you who haven’t seen any of my previous reviews, Rosenfelt has created an attorney who, having the benefit of a substantial inheritance, has quit, or tried to several times. (He runs a dog rescue he and a partner call the Tara Foundation. He loves dogs.)

But these cases just keep popping up. This one is in defense of a man who came to the rescue of a man who was keeping a dog from being beaten. Having been arrested, it was discovered he was wanted in Maine for a double homicide. These are never simple, open and shut cases. And yet—in this case, his DNA was found on the victim. How do you fight that?

These books are just plain fun. Fast, witty, often sarcastic humor coupled with deeply layered well-plotted novels. Extradited to Maine, Andy will leave his safe haven in New Jersey where he is constantly mistaken as a New Yorker amid the happy discovery of lobster rolls.

Of course he is going his get his team involved and I always love it when they get to the courtroom—there are teachable moments, intelligent and full of fancy footwork, maneuvering, not to mention some memorable acting scenes.

I started reading (or listening to) this series back in 2016 and got thoroughly hooked. You can’t go wrong with either the print or audiobook. Thank you Minotaur Books and NetGalley for my ARC review copy. These are (always) my own opinions.
