Like all the other previous issues, the stories in this issue cover a diverse range and introduce us both to well-seasoned writers as well as new voices. The introduction allows the reader to see all the pieces in conversation with one another and consider their timeliness to the current moment we live in. I enjoyed getting to know new writers and voices through this piece and am grateful for the advanced copy.

*The Best Short Stories 2026: The O. Henry Prize Winners* is a diverse collection that highlights the scope of modern short fiction. Edited by guest editor and well-known author Tommy Orange, this year’s anthology features voices like Colm Tóibín, Louise Erdrich, Brandon Taylor, Catherine Lacey, Helene-Marie Bertino, and Kevin Wilson, among others. The collection offers a broad mix, including international stories. The stories range from personal to humorous, exploring themes from identity to more experimental styles.

A key strength of this collection is that readers can find short stories from their favorite authors or discover a new writer to enjoy. It offers a little bit of everything. Like any anthology, some stories will resonate more than others based on what you like, but it provides an insightful look at the variety in short stories. I would suggest it to others. There is plenty to enjoy here. Thanks to Knopf and NetGalley for the ARC in exchange for an honest review.
