Description

A Fallen angel and an assassin walk into a bar...

For nearly seventy years, Murphy's had the worst luck any Fallen could ever have. The Collector - a title Murphy never wanted - can't seem to do his job: collect a soul. That's all. One. Soul. And after seventy years, Murphy's not so sure he wants to go back to the Below.

Joy is a practitioner of one of the world's oldest professions. No, not prostitution, although she'd gladly use her body as bait for a target. Murderer-for-hire, assassin, hitwoman - Joy's your lady if the money's right. And if it's someone who really needs killing, she'll even give you a discount.

Brought together by a job and dropped (sans parachutes) into the political machinations of the Above and Below, Murphy and Joy have to decide where their loyalties lie. Something big is coming for them, and the Collector has a job to finish.

Want to make a deal? Don't make it with Murphy!

The first thing that caught my eye was the cover - it’s so pretty!

Murphy’s Law For Demons has two amazing characters, Murphy and Joy. I enjoyed both of their perspectives and I think they make such a great team, so if there is ever a sequel, I’d love to read it.

Every chapter starts with some witty comment that fits perfectly with the content. The entire book has an amazing balance of humor and horror and the writing style made it a quick read- I read it in one sitting in just about 3 hours! This is CJ Pierce’s first novel, and I think she did an amazing job.

Warning! Although it came with a warning of excessive violence, I took it lightly and let me tell you: this is not a book for the faint of heart.

Many thanks to NetGalley for providing me with a free online ebook in exchange for an honest review.

I saw this book, and I was definitely intrigued as it’s right up my urban fantasy genre alley. I started this book, and like some books, I wasn’t sure I would like this. Boy, was I completely wrong. Once I got into it, I was hooked. Murphy is a Collector who just can’t seem to catch a break, and Joy is someone who ended up where she was because of a very, very bad incident (not for the faint of heart when she talks about it). This is a wonderful mix of UF, horror, gore, humor, sadness, and, dare I say it, joy that you just can’t help but love the characters. This isn’t a perfect book with some dropped threads, but they might be addressed in future books. Joy and Murphy worked so very well together, and after that end, I hope they can continue to be able to work together. I’m really looking forward to the next book in the series! Highly recommend. I was provided a complimentary copy which I voluntarily reviewed.

Witty, fun, full of twists and wonderful characters. This is a fascinating one sitting read. I do hope this isn't the end of Joy and Murphy's story. Loved the wisdom and fight of her grandmother. Never judge a demon by its status.

Found it pretty hard to get into this one, and I find it highly implausible how the characters get together and form their odd friendship which made it difficult to get into. But I did get into it eventually, character development was good, and it felt like a fresh take on the whole Hell thing.

I received a copy of this book from NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.

The cover is what first attracted me. Then I was hooked from the first chapter. I loved the characters; they were well written and fun. The story line was great. I’ve just started reading urban fantasy and they can be hit or miss for me. This was definitely a hit.

I could relate to Joy. Her and Murphy were my favorite characters. The banter between them made me laugh. I also shed some tears.

I also really enjoyed the little quotes at the beginning of each chapter. The fit in perfectly.

I can’t wait to get a physical copy of this book. I recommend this book for fans of urban fantasy who are ok with some gore.

I hope there’s more coming with these characters!

A fallen angel that does the devil’s accounting gets called up to be the Collector. He has to take a pure soul before he can go home. Problem is, he isn’t very good at it and has been the Collector for 50 years. While mourning his latest failed job he finds kinship with a psychiatrist/hit woman and they get called on by Leviathan to search for his missing “pet” that is withholding valuable information.

I really enjoyed this and loved the author’s dark witty sense of humor and the personality she puts into her characters. Fans of Tad William’s Bobby Dollar series, Christopher Moore’s Grim Reaper series, Dead Like Me tv series, and Good Omens will absolutely appreciate this book. I read that there will be a second book and am looking forward to it.

Murphy's Law for Demons

[Blurb goes here]

I had a lot of fun reading this title, the characters —well, all except one- are well thought out. The story is unexpected, it feels a bit of what the TV Series 'Lucifer' should have been. The story is gritty, gory, but still, as I said, fun to read.

I only have one problem with this book, her name is Joy. I'm not going to talk about her day or night jobs, which where great. It was her personality, suddenly -maybe one third into the book— she turns too perky and upbeat to be bearable. Don't get me wrong, hints of it would have been nice, but this gall takes it to the extreme, an utterly annoying extreme. There where instances when I even tried unsuccessfully to block her out, unfortunately she ends up figuratively fighting for the main character's roll.

Still, with this obvious fault, this was a great read.

Thank you NetGalley for the free copy.

Perfect for fans of pratchett and gaiman's Good Omens. An interesting take on Angel's, the fallen and humanities free will. A great read!

A witty, entertaining and gripping urban fantasy that kept me hooked.
I had a lot of fun in reading it and loved the world building, the tightly knitted plot and the well thought characters.
I hope this is the first in a series because I'd be happy to read other books featuring these characters.
Highly recommended.
Many thanks to the publisher and Netgalley for this ARC, all opinions are mine

At first I was very hesitant about this book, but it really surprised me! I devoured this book. Murphy was a very cute character, even a fallen angel can be cute right? I loved the banter between Murphy and Joy. All the characters have a very special place in my heart now. The climax of the story felt rushed and I was expecting something different.
There were a few points that I wished for more. As a debut novel though it was very well written.

I am looking forward to the rest of the series and I want to recommend this book to everyone!!

4 1/2 Stars

I love this book! So much.

Everything from the quirky main characters to the sarcastic chapter titles, this is entirely my jam. The plot was faced paced, and a perfect balance of dark humour and horror, I ended up reading it in one sitting. The writing is easy to read, and the characters easy to connect with.

Murphy is one of the Fallen, sent by the lords of the hell to the Earth, to become a new Collector of souls. His life was pretty quiet before he met Joy, and Leviathan gave them both a job. This wasn't a normal one, and Murphy needed to speak with the angels and demons to prevent the possible revolt on the Hell. Their journey isn't safe, and their life will be in constant danger.
Well, what can I say about this book. The cover is gorgeous, and the synopsis is really good: angels and demons are my favorite troupe. When I started to read this book, it gave me some real Constantine vibes, and I loved it. The characters are pretty cool, and I loved Murphy even it was a fallen one, or demon. It was amazing reading about the famous lords of the hell, and the well known for all of us archangels. The descriptions about the hell were terrifying. It was a bit hard to read some tortures, they were so descriptive that I felt them for myself. The pacing was delightfully good, and the story was pretty interesting. But... There is always a but... I didn't like how Joy was introduced in this story. It felt so unnatural and forced. Plus, sometimes I didn't understand why Joy wanted to participate so eager ñly in all this story. The angels and demons were a bit stereotypical, and I would love to se them a little different from we all know them.
But the book was good and I've enjoyed it. So if you like gore, demons and angels, and a good adventure with some cool characters, this is your book.
Thank to Netgalley and BooksGoSocial for providing me a copy of this book.

This was such a gritty, fun read! I haven't read much paranormal fiction, but wow this surprised me. I liked the writing, the characters were hilarious, and the cover is beautiful!

I really liked this book, it has a great mix of horror, comedy, action, sadness, and, heartfelt moments, I loved the characters, there the sort of people I would hang out with (if they were not assassins and demons), the story was well written and witty and interesting.

I also liked the reference to the ‘Pinky and the Brain’ cartoon, a favourite from my youth.
I’m looking forward to reading more books in the series.

Highly recommended!

I would recommend this book for this story alone, *Thank you to NetGalley for providing me with a copy of the book in exchange for a honest review.*

TW: Excessive violence & mentions of sexual assult. For A Mature Audience.

This was a lot of fun. I always love character driven stories. Both Murphy and Joy were everything. Murphy was such a great character. You couldn't help but feel for him. Ture to his name if something bad could happen it really did. I also loved the adition of Joy. She was so chaotic and the perfect pairing to Murphy. The action scenes were great and I liked all the quotes that appeared before every chapter. The only thing that stopped it from being 5 stars was the pacing. Some times we would spend too long on an idea because of the ongoing banter between Murphy and Joy, while other times I feel as if we should have spent more time going over other ideas. Beyond that it was a really enjoyable romp.

"May you always have the confidence of a drag queen."

I genuinely thought I wouldn't finish Murphy's Law. It took me a while to get into the story. Don't get me wrong, I am a huge lover of fantasy and angels / demons, but I think just the beginning fell flat for me. I was not a fan of the two gory scenes, and I ultimately skipped those chapters, cause of it.

By the end of the book, I ended up really liking the characters and became a huge fan of Murphy and Joy.

I really enjoyed the chapter titles and the quotes at the beginning of them, some giving a reference to the events in the book.

"Don't flatter yourself. I only look up to you because I'm short."

"Who doesn't love puppies? Sociopaths, that's who."

"It's okay if you don't like me. Not everyone has good taste."

I've had this on my shelf for a hot min. It sort of fell on the back-burner. Glad I picked this back up to finish it finally.

Here we follow Murphy who has had the worst luck any Fallen could ever have for the last seventy years. The Collector is a title Murphy never wanted but was given and he can't seem to get the job done...he needs to collect a soul. Joy is a practitioner of one of the world's oldest professions....assassin. Brought together in a bar by a job and dropped into the political machinations of the Above and Below, Murphy and Joy have to decide where their loyalties lie.

This was so good. I really couldn't put it down! I adored Murphy and Joy and I was so invested in what was going to happen next!! I wasn't sure what was going to happen!

Oooo this was a fun take on the whole Heaven/Hell and Angel/Demon thing! It was so creative and a fresh breath in the UF and paranormal genre. It was so entertaining. The dynamic between Murphy and Joy was witty and fun and their banter/convos were a joy.

I do wish this world and the afterlife was a little more fleshed out. I wanted to understand and get more detail. Maybe we'll get another book and we'll get to see more and learn more. I have a lot of questions still.

In the end, I had a lot of fun with this one! Loved the characters and I loved how creative this story and the world were. I do wish we learned more about this world (Above, Middle, and Below). This seemed to be the top of the iceberg for sure. I would love a sequel! I needed a good book like this one. I had two mehs. Overall, I shall stamp this with 4 stars.
