Description
Find true freedom and peace for your soul when you discover that God's grace secures what striving never could.
In this hustling, image-forward age of opportunity, we feel more anxious than ever. Despite all the affirming memes and self-reflections that dominate social media feeds, approval and worth often seem assigned to what we do rather than who we are. And we end up constantly feeling like we're behind, lacking, and failing—at home, at work, with friends, with God.
Ruth Chou Simons knows something about feeling measured by achievement, performance, and the approval of others. As a Taiwanese immigrant growing up between two cultures, Ruth was always on a mission to prove her worth, until she came to truly understand the one thing that changes everything: the extravagant, undeserved gift of grace from a merciful God.
In When Strivings Cease, Ruth guides you on a journey to find freedom from the never-ending quest for self-improvement. She shows you how to:
- Confront the ways you look to superficial means of acceptance and belonging
- Find relief in realizing self-help isn't the answer because you can't be so amazing that you won't need grace
- Stop seeing God as someone to perform for and start finding delight in responding to his welcome
- Let go of trying to rely on your own strength, your own abilities, and your own savvy by truly understanding the freedom Jesus purchased for you
With personal stories, biblical insights, practical applications, and touches of original artwork by Ruth, When Strivings Cease will help you see the beautiful truth that God's grace is the only thing you need—because in Christ you are enough.

Our society constantly pushes this idea that we need to do more, be more and make it happen. But what we all really need is to rest in the salvation already won through Jesus. The word grace is used all the time, and simple to know in definition but much more difficult to accept and authentically live out. We desire to earn our place and standing, to fit in with society. When Strivings Cease is a wonderful reminder that only God is enough and when we rest in this understanding, then we can truly let go of our strivings through Him.

This book is written for those, who like me, struggle with measuring their worth by their works. Ruth unpacks the truth that God holds our identity and worth in Him. As children of the King, we have value and worth way beyond what our accomplishments and striving can bring us. Because of that, we can stop trying, stop striving, and we can rest in the assurance that through Christ, our lives are secured and our worth is guaranteed. We can find rest.
Great wisdom. Read this at a time in my life where I was striving for approval from certain people and this brought me immense relief and comfort

Striving for approval is futile & frustrating...this book is refreshing & refilling my heart with peace & purpose. ..."It's easy to fall back into the pattern of striving FOR grace rather than striving IN grace"... When I heard about "When Strivings Cease" - I ordered copies for myself & a few friends. It has strengthened my weary heart. The Author, Ruth Chou Simons encourages her readers to walk in God's grace (& not chase after or try to earn it) She reminds us to be transformed by God's WORD, to be used by Him for His purposes- rather than try, by our own works to be accepted. It is not a book about taking short cuts or being lazy nor is it a self-help book - rather, it is a friend/mentor encouraging us to walk in the fullness of God's Grace & extend that Grace to others on our journey.
