Description
A “sweet Christmas charmer…” – Publishers Weekly
From the three-time Emmy Award-winning writer of Netflix sensation A Christmas Prince and Hallmark’s Christmas Camp, comes this heartwarming, feel-good Christmas romance about the power of believing in yourself to find your happily ever after...
A charming Christmas village, a storybook castle, a royal ball, and a gorgeous prince are the last things New York City reporter Kaylie Karlyle expects to find on her holiday freelance assignment to Europe. But when the family she’s interviewing turns out to be the royal family of Tolvania, Kaylie has a meltdown when the quirky queen wants her to write a Christmas fairy tale for the spunky, young princess. Kaylie must battle the princess’s father, who doesn’t trust the media, and her own insecurities about writing anything beyond the news.
To spark inspiration for the fairy tale, the queen recruits the prickly Prince Alexander to show Kaylie the family’s most spectacular royal holiday traditions. And sparks definitely fly when the only thing Kaylie and the prince agree on is that they’re both more “bah humbug” than “ho, ho, ho.”
But somewhere between sleigh rides and snow angels, merrymaking and mistletoe, upside-down Christmas trees, and a legendary Christmas crown, Kaylie and the prince open their hearts to Christmas and start believing in themselves and each other. It’s a real-life fairy tale in the making until Kaylie discovers a secret about a royal Christmas heirloom that jeopardizes everyone’s happily ever after. Can the magic of the season save this holiday happy ending?
Bonus Content: Includes exclusive delicious royal-themed Christmas recipes and holiday activities.

I love all of this author's Christmas romances and this one was no different. It gave all the warm, cozy Christmas feelings. I hope this book gets turned into a hallmark or netflix movie.
A truly enjoyable royal Christmas story. As I was reading it, I kept thinking it reminded me in many ways (especially the queen) of Julie Andrews' role in "The Princess Diaries." So, I had to laugh when I saw that it was written the creator of "A Christmas Prince." Both of these movies were ones my daughter and I enjoyed together when she was younger.
When a recently unemployed investigative reporter is sent to write a freelance feature piece on this royal family for an online magazine, we're as surprised as she is to learn she's actually been hired to write a fairy tale as a Christmas gift. Especially since this royal family has a serious dislike of reporters!
But the queen mother has a little something up her sleeve, hoping to bring the Christmas spirit back to her family after the loss of her daughter-in-law three Christmases earlier.
This well-written story drew me in as the reporter and the royal family each learned important lessons from the other. And I especially loved that the core message was how important family, love and belief are, not just at Christmas, but all the time.
I will say... I'd still like to know what Bob's connection was to the royal family (which is how he got Kaylie the job with them). Otherwise, it was an excellent story!
Firstly loved the cover and the title.

This book is perfection.
I loved the emotions this book puts the reader through. Stunning absolutely stunning!
Cannot wait to see this one made into a movie! Schaler has a gift for crafting sweet, fairy tale romances set around the backdrop of Christmas, and many of these have become beautiful Netflix films. This one is no exception. In a seemingly improbable plot, we have a struggling journalist who winds up next to a prince who has completely sworn off reporters...and of course they fall in love. As the title states, not only is she writing a fairy tale...she is living one.
This book is straight out of a Hallmark movie and full of lots of feel good moments! It is a perfect book to read on a cold day cuddled up in front of a fire while doing some relaxing and a book I definitely enjoyed reading. The characters were interesting and Blixen the dog was fantastic.
I got this free in exchange for an honest review. It is the first time I have read this author but I will be looking out for her books again. I really enjoyed the fact that you could relax into the story and immerse yourself in the world of Tolvania.
I love a good love story but especially if you throw in Christmas! This was a great story that left you wishing it was Christmas time right now so you could hear Christmas music and see Christmas decorations.
I do enjoy a good Christmas story. I loved all the traditions that made up this family and towns Christmas. How fun to have a book about them! I would love to visit Tolvania at Christmas time. Throw a city girl reporter and a royal family together and what could possibly go wrong? Loved the story and the characters. I really like Isabella and Blixen, but they were all wonderful. I think you’ll enjoy it too. I received this book from NetGalley, but my opinion is my own.
Thanks Netgalley for a arc copy of this book for a honest review..
I adore A Royal Christmas reading this book gave me all the Christmas vibe. I also enjoyed there love story can wait until it comes out on ebook format 5 stars 🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟
Happy Reading Lisa 📚
I love a Christmas story and Karen Schaler's are delightful. Taylor has lost her reporting job and goes on a secretive journey to Europe. There she learns she had been hired to write a Christmas fairytale for a small country's princess. Of course, it comes with a handsome prince and a lovable dog, Blixen (Blitzen?).
A fun story full of traditions and you even get recipes!
I feels like a fairytale itself as it moves to a HEA. This would be a great Hallmark movie. Perfect setting, lovely characters, quaint shops, and wonderful traditions. I can almost taste the chocolate and smell the gingerbread. Thank you, NetGalley!
I so adore a good love story set at Christmas. Even though it is the peak of summer and blazing hot, I wanted to curl up with a blanket, fire, hot cocoa, and read this book under the sparkling tree lights. City girl meets royal family and chaos is bound to happen. This had Hallmark movie written all over it. Keep more like this coming!
A feel good book wrapped up in Christmas magic. A royal family, a palace and a fairytale village celebrating Christmas traditions bring together love, loyalty and forgiveness. A beautifully written book that I enjoyed and would definitely recommend. Just don’t plan on doing too much once you start reading as it’s impossible to put the book down.
All I can say is Wow!! What an awesome story. I just could not put the book down. It had me from the beginning with such awesome characters and a good story line.
Kaylie loses her job as an Investigative Journalist not long before Christmas. Finding herself unemployed with no plans for Christmas or her future. She tries to decide what to do.
Her ex boss offers her a job doing an article about a families Christmas traditions. When she gets to Europe she finds she is writing a fairy tale for a Royal Family.
I've officially found my new favorite Christmas book!! I read a lot of books in this genre, so this isn't an easy feat. I cannot say enough good things about this book. It had fairy tales, a winter wonderland, endearing characters (who doesn't love a prince and workaholic), and so many dreamy Christmas traditions. If the book setting was a real place, I would be booking my flight right now. If you love Hallmark Christmas movies, then you MUST absolutely read this book. I'd give it 10/5 stars if I could. I'll definitely be re-reading it multiple times during the holiday season.
A Royal Christmas Fairy Tale by Karen Schaler. As I am reading Christmas stories I think I can never find a Christmas story better than the last one I read. This story about the royal family is filled with love, Hope friendship and joy all the things you need to find at Christmastime.
Did I read this in September? Yes. Was it worth it? SO MUCH YES!!!! I’m over here ready to break out my Christmas sweaters and hot chocolate in 90 degree weather because of this book. I want to be apart of this book.
Can this become a New Netflix movie ?!
What a lovely read! I enjoyed all the characters and found myself rooting for the prince and Kayley to find each other. I only stopped reading to Google upside down Christmas trees to see if it was actually such a thing. The recipes at the end are definitely a plus! I can't wait to try them. I would love a sequel to know how all the characters are doing.
Thank you NetGalley and Hawktale Publishing for the opportunity to read "A Royal Christmas Fairy Tale" in exchange for my honest opinion.
This is an incredibly beautiful and moving story that brings to light the importance of traditions in a family, especially at Christmas. How important even the smallest thing can be to build memories.
Kaylie Karlyle is an investigative reporter who never had time for the holidays. When she loses her job and is given a freelance opportunity she takes it and ends up in Tolvania where Queen Isabella has commissioned her to write a special fairy tale for Princess Anna incorporating as many of their family traditions as possible. At first Kaylie isn't happy with this, she doesn't consider herself a "puff piece" writer, she wants to write hard news items but it's hard not to fall in love with Princess Anna and her lovely dog Blitzen - who is an absolute delight throughout the book.
Prince Alexander is suspicious of Kaylie from the first moment they meet. When he learns she's a journalist he is even less pleased to have her at the castle. The Prince's wife Sophia died a few years ago and he has lost her love of the holidays. With the Queen and Kaylie's help he discovers that the Princess needs him to teach her their family traditions.
This is going to be a Christmas classic. it is such a feel good holiday book. There are so many interesting holiday traditions, many that can be tried out at home, along with the delicious sounding recipes. Frank Sinatra's "The Christmas Waltz" is still ringing in my ears. I wish there were more than 5 stars for Ms. Schaler.
What an amazing read and escapism at its best. This book should be on the big screen, the descriptions of all the Christmas decorations, traditions, village and the castle are superb and I really felt I was there. The characters were wonderful and very relatable. Both Kaylie and the Prince had issues they were trying to work through and both had strong walls built up around themselves. When these two were together you could instantly see the spark, even though they both tried very hard to deny it. Together they bring out the best of each other and add in Princess Anna and they are complete.
This was a magical Christmas read that had really got me in the festive spirit.
Karen Schaler has done it again. This book is the perfect Hallmark-esque romance. Low to no steam, wholesome family oriented and with a happy ending.
The twist about the royal crown was an added bonus to the storyline which I appreciated as the rest of the book was very predictable and followed the classic Hallmark formula.
The description of the palace and town was fantastic and all of their Christmas traditions have me already thinking about Christmas.
Really enjoyed this one and will be buying it as Christmas gifts this year!
A beautiful uplifting story of love, family, and the importance of embracing the wonder of Christmas time.
A sweet fairytale romance set at Christmastime. I loved all the traditions and the setting was perfect. This would make a wonderful holiday movie. The happy ever after was beautifully done.
A Royal Christmas Fairy Tale is another winner for author Karen Schaler. I’ve enjoyed all her Christmas stories and movies. Yes, the commoner falling in love with a royal may have been done before, but it’s a wonderful Christmas story with just enough twists and turns to change it up from the usual. You’ll want to add this to your Christmas reading list. Thank you to the publisher and netgalley for this ARC in exchange for my honest opinion.
Wow this book really captures the spirit of Christmas and will enchant you. I was spell-bounded from the very first chapter. The story-line is pure genius and characters are wonderful, they have such depth meaning you will instantly fall in love with them. Its air of enchantment and mystery will entrap you and will leave you feeling wonderful. This heartwarming, engaging, page turning tale will warm you through those cold winter nights. i would go as far as saying its the best Christmas book I have ever read and seen as though I usually go through at least 6 a year that's saying something. It was wonderful reading a Christmas story about a royal family that follows the Christmas traditions dating back hundreds of years. Yet the story was told in modern day including a very modern royal family and castle. In truth it is like a modern Cinderella tale wrapped up in a Christmas blanket all toasty and warm with a mug of hot chocolate in front of a nice warm open fire place. The book made me so happy reading it, with my heart filled with love I almost forgot I was actually reading a book, I was living it. I found that the great sense of family love coming from the story made me want the book to never end.
If you are looking for a book that is heart warming tale brimming with Christmas spirit, joy and a real sense of family and community connection. This book is defiantly for you.
I can't praise the author and publishing team for bringing me this fantastic Christmas story and really getting me into the Christmas mood. This book needs to be a film and I can't wait to see it. I will be definitely reading more by this author as it isn't often I get this drawn into a story. I wish it was real and I wish it was me.

This is the first book I have read by this author and will definitely be looking for others she has written. I loved this book and highly recommend it to anyone who loves Hallmark type stories.
Christmas traditions, royalty, investigative reporting, fairy tales, and relationships all make this a wonderful book you will definitely want to add to your list of Christmas books to read this season.
I received a copy of this book from HawkTale Publishing and NetGalley. Opinions expressed are my own.
A Royal Christmas Fairy Tale is a wonderful look at Christmas traditions and of rediscovering one’s own traditions and joy of the season. Kaylie Karlyle is expecting a promotion when what she gets is the television station being sold and her out of a job as an investigative reporter. When her former boss offers her an opportunity to travel to Europe to do a piece for a magazine on Christmas traditions she’s not thrilled but needs the money so off she goes. She and her family have not celebrated Christmas together for some time as Kaylie and her sister are always working so her parents go on vacation. When she arrives at her destination she discovers she been deceived about the assignment and she is really meant to write a fairy tale which she is very unsure about. Will she stay and make new discoveries about herself? This is a great Christmas story of love, joy, peace, family and traditions. It would be a very nice early gift for someone special, especially one who may need a bit of cheer or has lost their Christmas spirit. It is also a great read for all those who completely embrace the holiday season. The characters are so realistic. The storyline is sweet with a happy ending of course.
I received an advance copy of this book from Netgalley in exchange for my honest review.
A sweet, clean, lovely Christmas story. It has the bah-humbugs meeting and becoming Christmas lovers. Royalty becomes more in tune with the commoners and the couple become the country's favourite couple. A great holiday feel good story.

It was a light, easy read and urged me to keep turning the pages and reading more and more.
The Christmas references were wonderful and I felt like I was living in a Hallmark Christmas movie!!
There was a wonderful cast of characters including some lovely supporting characters and I loved getting to know them all.
A Royal Christmas Fairy Tale was a feel good Christmas book and I loved everything about it…..
Such an amazing Christmas story just like all of Karen's amazing books! This one I must say is one of my favourites and Karen has definitely earned her title of Christmas Karen!
Not only is this a gorgeously festive book but it also includes extra bonus Christmas content such as recipes and activities, including a recipe for Royal Christmas gingerbread pancakes. I felt this was a lovely extra touch
I can't wait to see what she comes up with next.
A ROYAL CHRISTMAS FAIRY TALE is full of whimsy, magical moments, and all things Christmas. Kaylie, an investigative reporter in New York City, loses her job just when her career is taking off the way she’s always dreamed. She takes a freelance assignment offered by her old boss, not knowing the specifics, and she’s swept away to the small European country of Tolvania. When she learns the job entails all things Christmas (and Kaylie is known as Scrooge by friends and family), she tries to resist and head back home. But a snowstorm, a royal family, an enchanting small village, and a handsome prince derail her plans.
Kaylie and the prince don’t hit it off the first time they unexpectedly meet. The prince’s daughter is an adorable ten-year-old filled with energy who seems wise beyond her years. Her grandmother, the queen, is the force behind the family and wants Kaylie to stay, for more reasons than just the job. The relationship between the members of the royal family and the princess is enchanting, and the princess letting her guard down and behaving like a child adds to the feel-good aspect of the story.
The book is filled with Christmas traditions and events. Kaylie realizes she misses her Christmases spent with her own family. That adds another dimension to the story as she not only reminisces but also reconnects with them at the holidays. The descriptions of the castle and the village really put you in the holiday spirit, beautifully written and festive.
The cover is exquisite and drew me in. I’ve read and enjoyed all the Christmas books written by this author and look forward to reading more. The recipes included in the back of the book are a nice touch, along with the activity of how to make snowflakes. If you’re a fan of Christmas-themed stories, give Karen Schaler’s books a try—if you haven’t already. A ROYAL CHRISTMAS FAIRY TALE is a winner!
I rated the book 4.5 stars but rounded to 5 stars here and on other sites.
When Kaylie Karlyle loses her job as an investigative reporter, an opportunity comes up to travel abroad. She does not know what her assignment is until she arrives and finds out she is to write a Christmas fairy tale for a young Princess. The Queen and young Princess are excited to meet Kaylie, but the young, widowed Prince Alexander wants nothing to do with her especially when he finds out she is a reporter. Can Kaylie come up with a fairy tale suited for a Royal family? What will happen when Kaylie starts having feelings for the Prince, but makes a mistake that might ban her from their lives forever?
This royal love story was such a wonderful novel. I loved the characters, especially the young spunky feisty Princess. It was charming, warm, and witty. I loved all the Christmas traditions that were shared in the story and could just sit back and imagine life in a castle with a royal family. It was the perfect holiday romance. Thank you to Hawktale Publishing, the author Karen Schaler and Netgalley for an advanced readers copy that I voluntarily read and reviewed.
A twist on a fairy tale? This is such a wonderful story about LOVE; not only romantic love (of which there is a little), but mostly love of family and community. I found this book to be a bit different from most of the Christmas romances that I have read in the past. I enjoyed how the royal family was so very much "down to earth" and keeping the welfare of their country at the forefront of their decisions / actions. Watching the main character, Kaylie Karlyle, evolve and grow from a single-minded investigative reporter; with little time for Christmas and anything other than work was pleasantly entertaining. The pace of the story was perfect and writing was clean and smooth. The fictional country of Tolvania was depicted as a believable quaint, tiny place with a lot of heart. The Christmas traditions at the heart of the story were amazing and quite interesting. I feel that this story is a gem and one that could be read every year to become it's own tradition.
If you want a Christmas romance that will dazzle and enchant you, then look no further than A ROYAL CHRISTMAS FAIRY TALE by Karen Schaler.
Kaylie Karlyle's entire life is centred around her job as an investigative reporter in New York, bringing people the justice they deserve by unmasking the bad guys. Dedicating every last minute to her work will be worth it when her new show comes to fruition. But when she finds herself unexpectedly unemployed, Kaylie isn't sure what her next move will be. When her old boss and mentor finds her a freelance assignment, writing up a Christmas story that's top-secret, Kaylie isn't sure if this is something she can do. After all, she stopped celebrating Christmas with her family a long time ago as they all moved on to their own careers and needs at Christmas time, but a job is a job. Yet this is no ordinary assignment.
Kaylie soon finds herself living in a castle with the royal family of Tolvania and has to write a Christmas fairy tale for the young princess who has lost some of the magic of the season since the tragic death of her mother. Although the princess's father, Alex, isn't exactly welcoming as he has had a tortured relationship with the press, Kaylie cannot help but fall under the magic spell of this special place, and against her better judgement decides to stay and see if she can deliver the perfect story.
While researching the many traditions that this stunning village celebrates, Kaylie cannot help but remember her own family traditions that she loved so much before work became all-consuming. And when the prince finally lets down his guard, could there be a spark between them that could make this Christmas the best one in a long time? Or will an error in judgement cost them both their fairy tale happily ever after?
The characters, the setting, and the community spirit that shines on every page, all combine to make this story the perfect Christmas romance. I loved Kaylie's determination and sense of right and wrong and watching her embrace Christmas and all the magic that it can hold was a delight. Alex is a very likeable character and I wanted him to open his heart again and the rest of the royal family are simply wonderful, especially the little princess, but the Queen has to be the shining star - compassionate, intelligent, and strong for everyone that she loves. From Christmas markets to tree lighting ceremonies, Christmas tea to gingerbread cookies, A ROYAL CHRISTMAS FAIRY TALE has got it all and I cannot wait to read another book by Karen Schaler when I decorate my house for the Christmas season.
I just loved this book! Such a sweet, well written book that showed the importance of family, traditions, and love in the holiday season. This book is truly fabulous way to get into the holiday spirit.
I literally couldn't put this book down! I loved EVERYTHING about it. Simply magical. Simply perfect! Simply... Why did it have to end ?
I love Christmas romance books around this time of the year and this one was a major hit for me! Curl up by the fireplace, grab a glass of wine and don’t put it down!
This is such an uplifting holiday book. It epitomizes everything Christmas is about. Family, friends, love and traditions. The book brought me a sense of peace and joy as I was reading it. The royal family, the cute and adorable princess and her her equally adorable dog all made this a magical story. I voluntarily read and reviewed an advanced free copy of this book. All thoughts and opinions are my own. I received a copy from the publisher through NetGalley.
Absolute stunner of a story. Wow! This was Christmas all wrapped up with love, romance and the promise of a wonderful future. Karen conjured up a picture of Tolvania and its people that was very easy to imagine and wish you were there. It was like stepping off the world for a while and wrapping yourself up in a cosy world of magic and anything is possible.
The story was also about traditions and I will make this my tradition now to read this book before Christmas each year to start my festivities off with a wonderful feeling
A Royal Christmas Fairy Tale by Karen Schaler is a most charming contemporary festive offering that really captures Christmas in a book.
The reader is treated to a warm, wonderful atmosphere in contrast to the cold snow outside. Tempting the reader’s tastebuds with gingerbread pancakes for breakfast and hot chocolate, you are in for a real treat. All our senses are awakened under the masterful pen of Karen Schaler.
This is a fairy tale for grown-ups as we experience, princes and princesses, and all the elements that make up Christmas.
There is a serious side too as we witness the damage on a family, of being a workaholic. The richest people are those who put family first.
A Royal Christmas Fairy Tale was positively delightful. I loved dropping in on a family as they shared their Christmas traditions.
I received a free copy via Net Galley. A favourable review was not required. All opinions are my own.
This is a feel good love story at it's finest.
Kaylie is an investigative reporter.
She and her family don't celebrate Christmas at Christmas time as her sister is in Germany and her parents always take some luxurious vacation.
She gets sent to Europe on a freelance assignment during Christmas to interview a family about Christmas traditions - which turns out to be the royal family, including 1 person who's against the paparazzi...
The Queen has thrown together Kaylie and Prince Alex in more ways than one, just hoping that something will work out.
Princess Anna has taken to Kaylie and shared several traditions and warmed up to her so much.
Prince Alex is still on edge with Kaylie.
Every time they get close, something pushes them back away.
I really enjoyed this romance. It's perfect for this time of year. Feel good, soul warming, traditional, family centered love story. I want to move to Tolvania!!
Thanks to NeGalley for allowing me to read and review this book!!

This author never let's you down and there's a reason she's known as christmas Karen. Totally amazing book set in the lost idyllic European locations in Tolvanaia... sounds alot like halstatt. We have a castle and a royal family and a single girl.. but the girl qnd the Prince dont get along initially but she loves the wheen and the Princess. Her job at hand is different from most journalist jobs but she falls into it like a duck to water but can the journalist write without commenting about the royals which is against the rules.
This is just magnificent qnd simply inspiring to want to be there. I couldnt out this down.
What a heartwarming, gem of a book! Karen Schaler’s A Royal Christmas Fairy Tale is the story of a reporter Kaylie Karlyle who goes to Europe to write a freelance story. Little does she know that what she finds there will have such a large effect on her life! It’s a lovely, charming book that will make you believe in the true meaning of finding a happily ever after.
New York City reporter Kaylie Karlyle has lost her job and is not sure what to do next. She is offered a freelance job writing about a family's Christmas traditions, but doesn't know who they are or where she is going. She gets on a private plane and is whisked off to the small country of Tolvania. There she meets Queen Isabella, her son Prince Alexander and granddaughter Princess Anna. Her arrival is a bit bumpy with the prince wanting her gone as soon as she arrives. It also turns out that this is not a news assignment, but a request to write a Christmas Fairytale for Anna, a gift from her grandmother. Kaylie wants to get back on the plane, but with a snowstorm raging, she is stuck. Queen Isabella convinces her to give it a try and Princess Anna and her dog Blixen quickly entrance Kaylie.
I really enjoyed this story. It is full of Christmas festivities and traditions from food to decorating to events and music. I loved the discussion about the making of snowglobes and why they are such an important part of the holidays. As Christmas magic unfurls, Kaylie is wrapped up in feelings and memories that begin to bury her "Bah Humbug" nature. Prince Alex begins to thaw where Kaylie is concerned, but they are both afraid to let their feelings show. This is such a wonderful Christmas story with family, festivities, romance and second chances. I love how Kaylie's family was also brought into this story and allowed us to see why Kaylie seems to be anti-Christmas. Queen Isabella is a wonderful character. She is formidable, loving, caring, and a wonderful mother/grandmother/monarch. She planned everything out and let it happen, only interfering when necessary. Anna and Blixen were wonderful. So much fun and troublesome as well. Alex is stoic and thinks he needs to be the gatekeeper for his family, but is not living. I was rooting for Kaylie to have a happily ever after and was not disappointed. A wonderful Christmas romance. There are a few recipes at the end and I definitely want to try making gingerbread pancakes for the family on Christmas morning.
