Description
Wizzy’s Words is a book of modern nursery rhymes, providing a well-researched resource for parents, carers, family and educational practitioners, to share with children from birth. We all love the nursery rhymes we grew up with, learning to recite them continues to be fun. However, traditional nursery rhymes contain the vocabulary from their times. Nearly 25% of children continue to miss age-appropriate targets, for oral vocabulary, by the end of their reception year (DfEd data). Although many of the rhymes follow traditional tunes, Wizzy's Words rhymes contain the oral vocabulary, associated with educational and life-long success in our times. (A full copy of the research is available by contacting the author – wizzyswords@gmail.com)
As children need to hear words before they can say, read and write words, Wizzy’s Words will be available in paperback, ebook and audiobook formats. The variety of formats and the range of children’s school entry needs, means that Wizzy’s Words can be adapted from 1-1, to small group and whole class sharing/teaching in the pre-school and school setting. Primarily, however, sharing the rhymes vocally and aurally, before pre-school and school entry and in the same 1-1 fashion that traditional rhymes have been shared, will underpin successful early oral vocabulary development.

This is a very helpful book to remind us to teach our children to read by reciting poems, teaching them rhymes, and having a lot of word play in their daily life. Our kids are all grown and are readers, so we've done well. But our family has always been readers and we are very verbal and we love to play word games. Wizzy's Words gives you tons of examples but, more than that, I think the best take away is to talk to your kids, read to them, sing to them, embrace nursery rhymes, both old and new, and just have a ball talking and playing with those fun things called words. I remember years ago Dr. Dodson had a similar book. While I am now a grandfather, and don't need the daily use of poems, we read to our grandkids all the time and they read to us. And we constantly play language games. So, this book will help you to see how easy it all is. And how useful it all is. And, most of all, how fun it all is.
