Description
Advance Praise
"This is a compelling story of a life lived full, with one maritime adventure after another. Behind every shipwreck lies a story, and the best ones are about people. In this case, we meet an exceptional and daring young man finding his way through life and a career at sea. It is a timeless tale, meticulously researched and exceptionally well written."
- James P. Delgado, maritime archaeologist, explorer and author (War at Sea; A Ship-Wrecked History from Antiquity to the 20th Century, Oxford University Press).
*****
"A Flick of Sunshine tells the story of Will Jackson, seafaring ancestor of authors Frederic and Alexander Hill, but the book does far more than just that. By carefully researching and illuminating Jackson’s time, place and intrepid adventures, the authors paint a much wider canvas - a detailed illustration of the great age of merchant sail at the end of the nineteenth century. Ranging from Maine to California to Europe and the South Seas, the daring exploits and narrow escapes of Will Jackson carry us along, and on the way offer a fresh and very readable tale of our maritime past."
- James L. Nelson, Author of Benedict Arnold’s Navy and Fin Gall
********
"Fred Hill is the author of a popular book on the shipbuilding and financial dealings of the Crooker brothers, major players in the maritime history of Maine (Ships, Swindlers and Scalded Hogs). He, with his son Alex, has favored us again with the amazing story of Will Jackson and his suspenseful adventures on ships around the world. Jackson was a young seaman who led the rescue of the captain and crew after a shipwreck in the far Pacific, and went to survive a series of perilous challenges on ships across the globe."
- Charles E. Burden, M.D., founder and long - time trustee of Maine Maritime Museum.

A fascinating adventure about Richard Willis Jackson, the son of Andrew Jackson. What a life for a young man, sailing the high seas all over the world. I see history lessons and geography lessons from this book, especially for middle school/high school students. This book is well researched and describes action at sea and historical events in America and abroad. So much potential for a learning experience. Thank you for a very wonderful read!
