This book belongs in every single social skills library, in every classroom! The eye-catching images and heartfelt, thoughtful descriptions of families really got me in the feels! I LOVED it, and I couldn't help but think of all the children reading it and seeing themselves reflected in the pages, when they may have felt left out of other books. What an important and valuable book!

I thought this was a great book! The illustrations are vibrant and lovely and the information is modern, updated and inclusive. I would highly recommend this to both parents and educators, it could be used in a variety of settings and ways, including in the home and/or classroom. I loved how diverse and all encompassing the story was in regard to different types of families. Thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for the free preview in exchange for an honest review.

This was generally a very inclusive book in considering the diversity of what families can look like. While acknowledging families with two moms or two dads, it still identified moms as female and dads as male, so it does fall a little short in those regards. The illustrations also showed many types of families. The ABCs was a cute way of approaching it although there were more letters than ideas to convey so it did feel a little repetitive, but still super cute.

This story book is so cleverly done explaining all kinds of families a child can have.

I love how simple ABCs have been illustrated with all those cheerful tiny, colourful details.

I love how minimal the words are in describing families.

Multicultural representation, LGBTQIAP introduction well made I say.

Thank you Quarto Publishing Group for the advance reading copy.

This is a sweet, positive, affirming look at all kinds of families. It gives simple definitions for terms kids have probably heard but may not fully understand. The overarching message is that families can be made up in any number of ways, but are centered around love, which is a great thing for kids to hear. It's so helpful for kids to see their own family configuration presented as normal and valuable.

The illustrations are wonderfully lively and diverse. I did notice one bit of language about adoptive kids being "given" which can be problematic, but hopefully an adult reading partner can address that or alter it during read-alouds. Otherwise, this is a great book to celebrate love and the family!

Many thanks to the publisher and NetGalley for the opportunity to read and review!

Overall I very much liked this alphabet book. The illustrations are whimsical, engaging and lovely. Many forms of family are acknowledged so that all children will both feel welcome and can learn about family types that are not their own. I also thought that the questions throughout were excellent as they invite discussion between the child and adult who are sharing the book.

However, as a social worker, I have some comments on the way the A in this book talks about adoption. On the first page, children are described as “given” to their adoptive parents. I think that there could have been a better word choice here. In addition, the book states that adoptive parents are “special” because they chose to become the child’s parents. This is language that may make children feel that they have to be “worthy” of having been brought into the family which is not fair to them. The following page states that the child was “made” for the adoptive parents. This simply is not true and is perhaps not intentionally, but nonetheless, dismissive of the birth family. Also, I note that often adoptive parents become parents after facing challenges in becoming biological parents. This book’s language does not account for this desire to be parents which is not only about “doing good” for a child. Apologies for these comments if they are bothersome but I feel that they are important. All of this will undoubtedly pass over the head of the young child for whom this book is written but it might have been better to have language that is more reflective of this way of becoming a family.

In all other respects, I very much liked this title. In a simple way, it shows, at times, rather than telling. For example, I loved that the wedding W showed same-sex marriage without the need to elaborate on it but simply as a wedding. The book is designed to be non-judgmental and inclusive in such a good way.

Many thanks to NetGalley and the publisher. All opinions are my own.

A cute primer for both ABCs and family concepts. A very inclusive little book with great imagery and good explanations and definitions of each word. Teaches children to approach families and others with openness and empathy.

A cute ABC book that introduces family and relationships to young children. An ABC of Families provides high level, simplified definitions of words like Adoption, Blended Family, Lineage, etc. It encourages children to be conscientious and kind members of the family. As some of the words and topics are a little advanced, I would recommend this book for early elementary school aged children. This will help children make sense of all the families they encounter.

Thank you NetGalley and the publisher for providing this ARC.

This was a diverse and inclusive lovely little children’s book that takes the reader on a journey from letters A to Z in order to show children the many different aspects, characteristics, and types of families.

The illustrations are bright, fun, colorful, and they complement the story well and do not distract too much from the narrative.

My students enjoy this ABC style of books. I know they would like looking at the illustrations in this book because of the bright colors. I was excited to see a variety of people from different walks of life and different versions of families represented in this book. This book will allow more students to see themselves and their families in a book. It does a great job of explaining a variety of different aspects of families in a kid friendly way. This would be great for elementary students, a social emotional section in a library, or for students who enjoy ABC books.

An ABC of Families is adorable and so inclusive. I loved the variety of terms included (some I did not know) and the simplistic explanations of them. I appreciate that the explanations are easy enough for anyone to understand, from little kids, to grumpy adults. I also appreciated that the emphasis throughout is always on the love and care in a family and that a family is a family, no matter who makes it up. Plus the illustrations are delightfully inclusive and diverse!
