The Know-Nonsense Guide to Money is an appealingly up-to-date guide to all things financial by Heidi Fiedler which is part of the Know-Nonsense series of guides and which is aimed at middle-grade readers. Originally published in 2017, this reformat and re-release from Quarto on their Walter Foster Jr. imprint is due out 5th April 2022. It's 64 pages and will be available in paperback format. Other editions available in other formats.
This is a resource rich and sensible guide to all things fiscal. It clearly and humorously explains concepts from debit cards to currency exchanges.

The book is broken up into chapters: What is Money, Earning, Saving, Spending and Borrowing. Each of the chapters contain full page illustrations, some with sidebars, covering such essentials as 'Needs vs. Wants' and setting financial goals. Quite a lot of the information contained here isn't regularly taught in schools and is really important for life skills mastery. It would make a great addition to a school or classroom library as well. Author Heidi Fiedler includes quite a number of subtle philosophical points in the text in an easy to digest (non-preachy) manner. The art by Brendan Kearney is quirky, colorful, and fun and supports and illustrates the text very well.

Quite a fun and accessible introduction to money and its potential effects on our lives.

Four stars.

Disclosure: I received an ARC at no cost from the author/publisher for review purposes.

A great primer on money and related concepts for elementary school aged children. Short descriptions and drawings are included with each topic. I do wish it went a little more in depth into day-to-day money management adults encounter. (Budget and Income have the same length entries as Bitcoin and Crowdfunding) This will serve as a wonderful introduction and likely spur deeper conversations and questions.

Thank you NetGalley and the publisher for providing this ARC in exchange for an honest review.

In my opinion, every child should have access to this title. It will help them to develop a most important life skill, understanding where money comes from and its importance. There are many colorful engaging illustrations along the way and the text is involving, not dry. Children will learn about why and how we use currency, credit cards, bitcoin and more. They will find out what purpose banks serve, what writing a check means, how one can invest and many other things. This title truly provides a basic financial literacy course in easy and digestible form. This is just what kids need, even if they do not know that was the case; they soon will.

Many thanks to NetGalley and Quarto Publishing Group – Walter Foster, Walter Foster Jr Books for this title. All opinions are my own.

There are different sections, such as types of money, earning, saving, spending and borrowing, Each section goes into more detail about the subject, and included are lots of fun graphics. The whole book is easy to read, and your child will enjoy learning more about money, so that they can have a better future.

The Know-nonsense Guide to money is a fabulous non-fiction book that teaches important economic and mathematical concepts and vocabulary related to money and trade. Each term has one page of text, with a short 1 sentence definition and a paragraph of about 5-10 sentences with more depth, as well as an illustration that is meant to be a little silly but also demonstrates the concept in a way that is very clear and easy to comprehend. As a grade 3 teacher, I wish that I already had a copy of this book in my classroom library because it would have made a lesson I taught in March 2022 much easier! Terms like investing, bills and expenses are difficult concepts for young children to grasp, and can be difficult for teachers to teach! I think this book would be a wonderful resource to add to my units on money in Math as well as any lessons about trade (ie. the fur trade - Canadian history) or project based learning assignments where money is part of the project. I love the play on words "know-nonsense" and think that this guide would be interesting and helpful for teachers and families wanting to impart a sense of monetary systems with children in the 6-12 age range. I appreciate Netgalley and the publisher for giving me the opportunity to read and review an advance copy of this awesome book! I look forward to picking up a copy for my classroom library soon!
