Description

Pause to take your leadership from functional to excellent to embodied!

In The Leadership Pause, master somatic leadership coach, trauma psychologist, and mindfulness instructor Chris L. Johnson takes you on a guided journey into your most truthful future as a leader. Johnson’s call to action is for all leaders—new and seasoned professionals alike—to take on the important practice of pausing.

The Leadership Pause shows how to quiet the noise of the daily hustle so you can hear the still-small voice of purposeful curiosity that lives within you, which breeds wisdom in both work and life.

The Leadership Pause teaches

  • the gift of mindful awareness that leads to clarity of mind and heart, reduced stress, and increased resilience;
  • a deeper connection to self;
  • a clearer vision of the natural leader resting just beneath the surface.

Johnson shares stories from established and powerful leaders about how they’ve used pause practices to transform their previous strategies and ways of thinking and behaving to find greater meaning and purpose in their work. This book is for anyone looking to deepen their impact on the lives around them, leave a profound mark on their organizations, and build a legacy of intentional focus, pragmatic ambition, grounded compassion, and empathy-in-action.

Advance Praise

“The best leaders understand that to create a positive impact on business, employees, customers, and the even the world, they need to be intentional about their personal practices. Through The Leadership Pause, Chris Johnson guides leaders through the necessary, critical steps to tap into their purpose and shine as drivers of change.”

-Kristy Wallace, CEO, Ellevate

“In today’s world of constant change, there’s a direct attack on our senses due to an overwhelming volume of distracting information. If allowed, we’ll slowly lose sight of what’s most important to us and replace it with what’s important to others. A pause allows for that brief moment of clarity, a lifting of the fog, a recalibration to remember what outcome is most important. As a person who spends most of his life sprinting through each day, the pause has allowed me to become a better learner, a more engaged communicator, and strategic in my decision-making. And, hopefully, a better leader!”

-Mark Melson, president and CEO, Gladney Center for Adoption

“When everyone and everything around you is urging you to ‘Go-Go-Go’ and ‘Push-Push-Push,’ the hardest thing in the world is to pause, and to pause in a way that allows you to see things differently. Chris has done an amazing job in this book with what is the most overlooked, but single most important leadership and entrepreneurial skill—the pause. Thank you, Chris!”

-Mark Silver, M.Div., founder and CEO, Heart of Business, Inc.

“A beautifully crafted book! Pause in your busyness and let it help you find and use the spaciousness between input and action.”

-Ginny Whitelaw, author of Resonate and The Zen Leader

“To pause and be centered, fully present in the moment, your attention focused precisely where you choose, is a superpower—yet it is based on a set of fundamental skills. In The Leadership Pause, Chris Johnson uncovers the essential skills that yield peak performance in leadership, whether leading a corporation, a PTA meeting, or a family activity.”

-Don Catherall, PhD, author of Shaped by the Shadow of War

“I’ve benefited tremendously from Chris’s coaching over the years. She combines classical training in psychology and neuroscience with a somatic approach, which is highly effective. I had always wished for a book, so any aspiring conscious leader can benefit from her teaching. Now I am delighted to recommend her book, The Leadership Pause. This book makes a compelling case for developing conscious leadership from the inside out to create powerful change in the world around us.”

-Harry Zhu, CFO, Alliant Credit Union

“If you are really ready to significantly step up your leadership quotient, The Leadership Pause is a perfect place to dig in to show how you can enliven, expand, and master your inner game! Chris’s background, expertise, and heart are perfectly suited to not only reveal why ‘The Pause’ is so important, but to also show you how to realize it to receive the many benefits of ‘Being the Pause.’ This book is the secret behind The Secret for leaders. Are you worth it? Are your people, your company, and your relationships worth it? If so, then dig in and enjoy!”

-Kevin Rafferty, The Conscious Leaders Coach

“Grounded in neuroscience, Chris Johnson provides a profound call to action in The Leadership Pause for leaders who’re compelled to lead effectively with presence. She provides them with the tools needed to dive deeply and deliberately to best serve the world.”

-Nick Sarillo, founder of Nick's Pizza & Pub, The Trust-and-Track Institute

“I've had the great pleasure of learning mindfulness and other leadership skills from Chris over the years. She's managed to distill the most essential elements to these precious pages, each imbued with the vulnerable wisdom of her own learning journey and backed by cutting edge science. In a world where distractions from technology feel overwhelming and ‘space for reflection has been crowded out,’ it’s imperative that we each find our own way to pause and regain our attention. This practical and powerful guide will help you practice, and Chris’s steady voice will be there when you forget.”

-Andy Swindler, co-founder and chief empathy officer, FeelReal

“The power to influence the obstacles that confront people is and always has been inside each of us. It involves being aware of everything around us: nature, weather, people, animals, and, of course, our individual selves. In The Leadership Pause, you’ll find pragmatic steps to integrate the pause into your daily life as a leader. Johnson has provided a pragmatic SCOPE process to expand your understanding of why the pause is so critical to life and leadership in the 21st century.”

-Paul Bailey, founder and CEO, ProSORT Services

Featured Reviews

I wanted to read this book because I felt like I was running out of breath, ideas, passion and most of all that I had become too busy to even appreciate the small wins I made while leading. It is the right book to read, especially because now and for young people-it is all about the hustle, about wanting a life unlike that of our folks, and also get to travel, have fun and share it with the world on social media- but reading this book is the subtle reminder that you can wear yourself out chasing it all- and you need to pause, stop and reflect and continue in your journey or redirect your energy.
It's an encouraging book and I have the feeling that anyone in advocacy, who is constantly fighting for change would appreciate it more.
Thanks Netgalley for the eARC.
