Description

Abandoned. Nobody to show her the ropes. How will she use her new powers?

Collection: Seven short stories plus one novella

In today’s world, nobody believes werewolves exist. Neither did Sara Flores until her Lupiti neighbor — a 400-year-old shaman — turned her. He then had the unmitigated gall to die on her, before telling her anything about what to expect. Sara determines to use her new skills for good. But besides saving innocents, what exactly does that mean? Yes, she can track down bullies and evildoers. But, for example, is it okay to kill them? If so, is it okay to eat them? How about if she’s really, really hungry? Is it okay — for fun — to walk down dark alleys hoping some bully is dumb enough to target her? Most of all, can she keep going up against hideous evil — without leaving behind a piece of her soul?

All the following stories are included:

—WHAT ARE FRIENDS FOR? Sara’s origin story.

—A WOLF IN SHEEP’S CLOTHING. Her first night running with wolves.

—CHOICES. Can she save a woman from her husband’s psycho friend?

—THE TOO-SMART KID. Sara pulls a half-dead kid from the river — only to be targeted by goons.

—WHY I NEED TO STAY AWAY FROM TEXAS. A sheriff gets way too close!

—CURIOSITY KILLS (Novella): Sara is in the crosshairs of a billion-dollar oil company exec determined to kill a college hacker who found their biggest dirty secret.

—A WEREWOLF AT THE ZOO? Sara loses her mind over an abused wolf.

—WEREWOLF SEEKS LUPITI WISDOM: Sara wants answers dead Shaman who turned her. What could possibly go wrong with this idea?

Advance Praise

"Sue's books are fantastic, and Sara is, without exaggeration, one of my favorite heroines I've ever followed in any book, ever! And the stories about how she first became a werewolf and began navigating her new world as a kick-butt vigilante did not disappoint. I'm such a huge fan that the experience left me almost giddy, and no, I'm still not exaggerating!

My recommendation for these books is to start at the beginning with Newbie Werewolf, and read every last Sara Flores story you can get your hands on! You will not be disappointed! -- Reedsy Discovery

Newbie Werewolf by Sue Denver
First of 8 Adventures of Sara Flores

What a fun collection of stories this proved to be! I can see a wide variety of readers enjoying finding out how Sara becomes a werewolf, what she does next, and how she spends part of the first year of her life with the amazing ability to transform from human to a paranormal werewolf.

What I liked:
* Sara: middle aged, dog owner, friend of a shaman, unprepared for the changes that suddenly impact her life
* The story of how Sara became a werewolf
* What Sara decided to do with her abilities and how her values changed
* Thinking about what it would be like to be a werewolf
* The cases Sara chose to take on to aid those in need
* The writing, plots, and location
* That the stories were short and each one different
* How Sara grew and evolved as a woman and werewolf
* The inclusion of the senses used by Sara during each story
* I felt that these stories could be read by young adult and perhaps a bit younger readers – if parents vetted the book first
* The tie-in with myths, legends, and the tie-in to a fictional Plains Native American tribe
* That I cared about Sara and wanted to know what would happen next
* That Sara was not perfect but did her best
* All of it really except…

What I didn’t like:
* Who and what I was meant not to like – there were plenty of baddies to be dealt with in each story

Did I enjoy this book? Yes
Would I read more in this series? Yes

If you're looking for a werewolf book that's different than the norm, Newbie Werewolf is definitely worth checking out. The stories follow

Sara Flores, who was turned into a werewolf by one of her neighbors and uses her newfound werewolf powers to fight crime.

Each story is an enjoyable, quick read. The lore is different than other werewolf books and ties in with myths, legends, and Native American culture. Sara Flores is a strong female protagonist and her journey as a new werewolf is exciting. I highly recommend this book to anyone looking for a unique werewolf story.

I have one criticism only, that I would love a longer story about Sara. She offers the opportunity to really showcase the thoughts and possibilities and potential of an older woman. She copes amazingly well with her new status and abilities, and is still developing and exploring.
This is a werewolf storyline that is different and one that ties in closely to Native American myths where shamans can transform.
I enjoyed each story. And would read more.

Good read. Great characters, enjoyed the setting, lots of side stories weaved into it and it flowed really well. A good read for a rubbish day. Will make you feel better!
