Ex-MI6 analyst Oliver Jardine is thrust back into the world of espionage while assisting a dissident Venezuelan General travel to Lisbon.

Ex-MI6 analyst Oliver Jardine thought he’d left the world of espionage behind. But when a dissident Venezuelan General turns up on his doorstep in Spain, he’s thrust back into a volatile world of geopolitics, international intrigue, and targeted assassination.

With the General due to speak at the UN in the coming days, Jardine agrees to help him travel to Lisbon. Only the dictatorial Venezuelan regime has other ideas. Crossing Spain and Portugal, Jardine and the General become entangled in a game of cat and mouse, walking a fine line between life and death as they are pursued by shadowy forces.

As they edge closer to the Portuguese capital, will the General make it? Or will his voice be silenced forever? THE GENERAL OF CARACAS is an explosive new spy novel with dashes of satire and wit that seductively draw you into a world of international intrigue, assassination plots, and a race against time to uncover a government secret that could undo a dictatorial regime. Recommended for fans of Graham Greene, Mick Herron, Ian Fleming, and Ross Thomas—a spy caper for the modern day.

Advance Praise

“With his sophomore book, Page is firmly establishing himself as a keen observer of the comical misadventures, incongruences and juxtapositions present in Latin America and her society and politics. This time his sights are firmly set on Venezuela and I can't remember a better or more witty portrayal of the region since Louis de Bernieres', The War of Don Emmanuel's Nether Parts.” —Richard McColl, the Colombia Calling podcast.

“Page manages to paint a picture of the current situation in Venezuela and reveal the absurdities of the current regime while entertaining in a page-turning spy novel.” —ARC Reviewer

The General of Caracas by Lachlan Page I read many espionage books and am a member of Spybrary a Facebook page dedicated to spy novels. One of our complaints are there are not many books set in places other than Berlin or Eastern Europe. Well as the title suggests this book takes place in Venezuela, Colombia, Spain and Portugal. Besides the unique locations it is a well written story. There are two strong women in the story and no sex. I consider this a positive as nothing ruins a good story for me than a woman falling apart when the strong hero embraces her and gives her a kiss. No, this book moves along as a female Cuban assassin tracks and contracted to kill a dissident Venezuela general who has information to break down the corrupt Venezuelan government if only he can get on a plane in Lisbon to the UN in NYC. The general is assisted by a former desk bound MI6 agent and his wife who have retired to run a small hotel in the middle of nowhere Spain. Along with the General they make their way to Lisbon in an aptly named Defender. There is a bit of humor and a plot that is not tricked out with McGuffins. All in all, a pleasant read. Well done Mr. Page. I believe there might be more to follow.

My thoughts about Lachlan Page’s The General Of Caracas In the dark world of intelligence and espionage, all information is guarded in the name of national security. But some stories escape the fiercely guarded classified files. Lachlan Page’s The General Of Caracas takes the spy thriller genre in to a fresh altitude. Writer Lachlan Page opens the cards gradually and the highpoint is in end of its every chapter Lachlan Page unravels something shocking. The book throws many surprise’s after another and it reaches its crescendo in the concluding stages, with the climax making a solid impression. The story of Lachlan Page’s The General Of Caracas, begins with the introduction of books lead character Ex-MI6 analyst Oliver Jardine is thrust back into the world of espionage while assisting a dissident Venezuelan General travel to Lisbon.

On the whole, Lachlan Page’s The General Of Caracas is a high-octane spy thriller that works big time. This one has style and substance, both, besides dazzling suspense, stunning international locales and stylish execution. Most importantly, it has Lachlan Page’s powerful writing, which is the trump card of this enterprise. A Venezuelan general - General Angel Pereira- thrown in prison because of his dissidence against the current Venezuelan regime escapes. An ex-MI6 analyst - Oliver Jardine - now in a completely new line of work. A random connection is all it takes for this fast-paced thriller to be set in motion taking us through Venezuela, Colombia, Spain, and Portugal across two continents. I love it when a thriller is set across various countries, and even more so when it’s layered in with a great sense of place, history, and culture. Lachlan Page has done a great job of integrating all this while keeping the thriller moving along at a speedy clip. There are no side distractions, this book is full on focused on the bad guys chase of the general as he tries to make his way via Spain and Portugal to New York to expose the Venezuelan president at a U.N. meeting. I enjoyed the tossing in of local food too - pasteis de nata from Lisbon’s world famous Pasteis de Belem - I can attest they are the best - yummy! I enjoyed all the characters and the tongue-in-cheek humor. All in all this was a fun, entertaining read with a healthy dose of history, culture and local insight that made it a satisfying and enjoyable investment of time. I’d definitely recommend the book and I’m looking forward to the next in the series. Nicely done! Many thanks to the author, publisher, and NetGalley for the opportunity to read and review this book.

This was a really awesome spy novel with lots of action and adventure! It’s the second in the series but can be read as a standalone, which is what I did. It was fast paced, and really well written.

I specifically loved the mention to the Salisbury poisoning of Novichok, “The quaint town with the beautiful cathedral where someone tried to murder the Russian defector and his daughter.” I actually live there, and it was huge news at the time, you couldn’t even walk through the streets without a media crew getting in your way.

I also really loved that the Venezuelan government had all these code names for everyone. It just added that extra little bit to the book, and it was thoroughly enjoyable. I do like these kinds of books and will be on the lookout for more from Lachlan Page in the future.

Thank you to Lachlan Page for the gifted paperback, and to Love Books Tours for my space on the blog tour.
