Description

The friendship that changed the destiny of a nation…

In the waning years of the thirteenth century, two young noblemen form a bond that forever changes their destiny and that of Scotland’s. Their shared pledge of honor would endure for a lifetime to secure power in the Isles for Angus Og Macdonald and a crown for Robert Bruce. This is the story of their friendship, their times and the battle that secured their future.

Standing beside them would be two women from Ireland, Áine O’Cahan, the dark-haired beauty from Ulster, who captured the heart of the Lord of the Isles, and Elizabeth de Burgh, the fair Norman heiress who stood by her man, King Robert Bruce, though it would cost her dearly.

Enter the world of medieval Scotland and live the adventure!

Advance Praise

"1. ""Walker crafts an epic tale of love, loyalty and destiny set during one of the most turbulent times in the history of Scotland. Walker succeeds in bringing the history of Scotland, its land and people vividly to life. The sense of time and place conveyed to the reader throughout the novel indicates that she has carried out a significant amount of detailed research prior to putting pen to page. I found it to be an engrossing read on many levels.""

2. “A glisteningly ambitious novel that offers more than meets the eye with its crisp storytelling and impeccably built characters. One of the book's masterstrokes is the lyricism that runs through the prose, adding grace to the story, and ultimately making it irresistible. The presence of a strong plot, fast-paced and intricate, further elevates this book to a level beyond its genre. A captivating tale of friendship, courage, love, and heroism.""

3. ""Regan Walker is an absolute master of this genre and I found myself immersed in the battle for freedom and independence that this tale encapsulates. The characters are beautifully drawn and the narrative flows seamlessly from domestic life to the horrors of battle and the struggle for survival in these tough and harsh times of the thirteenth century. This is a meaty tome and it is easy to get entranced to the exclusion of all else. At its core, this is a love story and the relationships between Angus and Aine as well as Robert and Elizabeth were the absolute highlight of the adventure. There is action aplenty for the adrenaline junkie and battles galore but it is the tenderness and sweetness of the relationships and the families that will endure for me. This is a fantastic read, certainly one of this year’s best books, and one I can highly recommend."" ~ Readers' Favorite"

Very good novel giving much information about Scottish as well as Irish history while giving a credible voice to fascinating historical characters from the 13th century.
I received a complimentary ARC from NetGalley and I am leaving voluntarily an honest review.

Previous to reading this book I have restricted myself to war novels from the late 1800’s on. This book changed all that. I’ll now be reading from medieval times on. It was a great read and hard to put down.

Was ever there a book so compelling?! This novel captured my attention with the very first sentence and held it throughout until the last full stop. If I were to sum this book up in one word then that word would have to be - BRILLIANT!

The author has depicted a very believable world, it is very obvious the amount of research that has gone into this novel for it came across as very authentic in the telling. Likewise, the characters were depicted in such a convincing way that I instantly connected.

If you enjoy historical fiction set in Scotland then this is a novel not to be missed. It is a real treat for lovers of quality historical fiction.

*I received a copy of this novel from NetGalley for review consideration.
