The Little Queen is an exciting, contemporary fantasy. Within a hidden facility a breeding program, pushing a single line of honeybee queen through ten thousand generations, finally achieves its aim: a sentient hive. But when the Little Queen gains self awareness and realizes she is imprisoned, she executes a daring escape, which nearly kills her. In doing it, she changes the trajectory of a mountain tourist town, and the life of Anthony, the boy who rescues her. A bond grows between the motherless boy and the hiveless queen. She resurrects Anthony's hive and makes it into something strange and new. But the dark forces seeking the Little Queen and her secrets, find her. And now she and Anthony must find a way to save themselves, and everything they love.

This story balances pace and character in a moving exploration of found family, and redemption. And behind it all, mystical, paranormal powers - both the Little Queen's and Anthony's - link the two of them together.

this was such a unique concept and it did what I was hoping for. It had a great scifi element and still felt like a realistic story when taking out the scifi elements. It does what I was expecting and I really had a good time reading this. K Hincker has a great writing style and I'm excited to read more from K Hincker.

"There is a hive-mind there. One like he has never seen before. Brilliant and hot and massive. What is going on? This colony is going from one extreme to the other, from no hive-mind at all to an astonishingly powerful hive-mind. It must be reacting to its near-death experience, celebrating, producing extra energy as it gets back on track, although that is really no explanation for the mind he touches. And it seems to be getting stronger and bigger, even as he watches."

An unusual concept with a sci-fi slant. According to bee lore, a hive of bees is destined to die by green gas before it has a chance to swarm. Little Queen has to escape the hive before this happens.
Anthony used to help his mum to care for her honey bees until she dies. He has become disengaged at school and misses her a lot. When he checks the hive after a while, he finds the bees have lost their Queen and are doomed unless they get a new one.
I was drawn to this book because I am a bee keeper and can see that the author has researched honey bees with many accurate bee facts within the story. However there were enough inaccuracies that spoilt the story. The major one being that while the Queen pheromone means the bees know who belongs in their colony, it is the worker bees, not the Queen, who decide how the hive behaves.
Worth a read. I think that teens would like this as well.
