Description

Tide Waters, British Columbia, is a quiet town where nothing happens. It's also where Maia and Jayce have lived all their lives and now call home as sisters. So, when the ground-breaking cardiac research goes missing from a local company, and Jayce's friends are found dead, Jayce does something new—she and a private investigator, Quinn, follow a financial trail that leads them to Ireland. Together, they try to find the final clues that will send a man to jail.

Maia's had some heart problems since she was a kid, and her occupation as a teacher doesn't qualify her to track down missing research and to look into the deaths of two people she's never met. However, when Jayce disappears, Maia vows to bring her sister home. But is Maia willing to go beyond this world and do whatever needs to be done to keep her promise?

When I started reading this I expected an urban fantasy only to discover it was a hard core mystery (what ever you call one that isn't a cozy but it isn't a police procedural either). Maia travels to Ireland from British Columbia after her sister disappeared investigating missing medical research and the mysterious death of her friends. Maia has no experience being a detective but no one in Ireland seems interested in looking. So she will do what she must to bring her sister home. Well, doing whatever is necessary to bring her home is where some paranormal aspects come into a play. So, not an urban fantasy but more mystical than I was thinking as I went further along in the story.

It is a satisfying story about life, death, grief and family. I liked that it deals with how hard it is on beings that deal with families and friends of those who are losing and lost someone they love. Burn out people, it is a thing.

Thanks to Netgalley and the publisher for an ARC in return for an honest opinion.
