Description

Brian, an aimless slacker in his twenties, works double shifts at his waiter job, never cleans his apartment and gets black-out drunk with his restaurant comrades, Nik and Darby. He's been struggling to manage his transition to adulthood almost as much as his monthly transitions to a werewolf. Really, he is not great at the whole werewolf thing, and his recent murderous slip-ups have caught the attention of Tyler, a Millennial were-entrepreneur determined to explore exponential growth strategies in the mythological wellness market.

Tyler has got a plan and he wants Brian to be part of it, and weirdly his brand of self-help punditry actually encourages Brian to shape up and to stop accidently marking out bad tippers at the restaurant as potential monthly victims. But as Brian gets closer to Tyler's pack and drifts further away from Nik and Darby, he realises that Tyler's expansion plans are much more nefarious than a little lupine enlightenment...

Big-hearted, goofy, anarchic and funny, Bored Gay Werewolf is a smart take on the doomsday logic of late capitalism and the complicated meeting point of masculinity and sexuality. More than that, though, and like Scooby Doo with Grindr or Stranger Things with sex and ennui, it's a buddy novel about finding your pack, the power of friendship, and learning how to be comfortable in your own, shaggy werewolf pelt

Brian, an aimless slacker in his twenties, works double shifts at his waiter job, never cleans his apartment and gets black-out drunk with his restaurant comrades, Nik and Darby. He's been struggling...

Did I walk into this expecting a fun gay romance? Yes! Was that my fault for not reading the description and just diving in head first? Yes, and I’m glad I did that!! This was a super cool take on a werewolf coming of age story, in that the werewolf was an absolute disaster of a fuck up in his own eyes, and the cast of characters was delightful. We had a perfect villain in Tyler and an incredible support system for our deeply silly MC!! I was outside of my comfort zone with this book, but I’m so happy I stuck with this because the pay off at the end was absolutely worth it.

representation: Philippina straight bestie, nonbinary best friend, gay MC

spice level: two very quick but detailed enough sex scenes

This is the werewolf book I didn't know I was waiting for! Brian is living his not so great werewolf life holding down a job as a waiter, drinking with his coworkers Nik and Darby, and spending the rest of his non-wolf time doomscrolling, binge watching shows on Netflix, and going out on awkward Grindr hookups. He's been in a funk since his transformation, and everything is too much and he has no one to talk to about his problems. Enter Tyler, the poster boy for rich, entitled, and toxic masculinity. Oh, and he's also a werewolf. He's convinced he can turn Brian's life around, unlock his true potential, and get him to join his in up and coming, highly suspicious, online community for werewolves, The Pack TM. Pyramid scheme for the supernatural? It's more likely than you think!

I listened to the audiobook and binged right through! Brian's point of view is humorous, sarcastic, self-deprecating, and full of the mundane details of day to day life. I kept finding myself laughing and grinning at his narration. I really love underdog stories, and you can't get much more underdog than Brian. His friends Nik and Darby are the best friends a closeted werewolf could have, and deliver tough love, honesty, and camaraderie. They are A+++ supporting characters! Tyler made me want to murder him every time he opened his mouth. The plot is compact, compelling, and highly entertaining. I thoroughly enjoyed this book and it left me wanting a sequel!

This was such a fun, quirky book filled with relatable early 20s angst and finding oneself. The portrayal of friendship, found family and self-acceptance is not lost on the reader. The humour is in the storytelling is also quite entertaining. Tony really wrote a fun book here - definitely sharing my thoughts with friends!

I went full moon feral for this book and could not put it down! Bored Gay Werewolf gave me the vibes of watching Being Human for the first time and it was fantastic!
We follow Brian who is having some trouble not only with transitioning into adulthood - but with the transition that comes once a month on the full moon! After a few full moon nights get a bit “murdery” and some not so well meaning characters start sniffing around life for Brian really gets interesting. Packed full of dark humor, supernatural lore, friendship, twenty something awkwardness, restaurant life and chaos with social commentary on the dangers of toxic masculinity, growing up and the importance of community - Bored Gay Werewolf is a ridiculously fun read!

Thank you so much to NetGalley and W.F. Howes Ltd for the advanced copy.

With a title like Bored Gay Werewolf, you bet I’m gonna wanna read it. Well, thanks to NetGalley, I got to enjoy this via audiobook.

I adore Brian. His sarcasm is delicious. I can’t tell you how many times he left me “howling” (get it? Cos he’s a werewolf! Lol) Anyway, he is a great character. Very relatable. No, I’m not a guy and/or gay, but the struggles of finding your way in life, connecting with people & learning who to trust, those are all relatable issues and, like Brian, can lead you down the wrong path, which is where we meet Tyler.
Tyler’s character is brilliantly written. Innocent and kind, but as the story develops, his manipulation slowly reveals itself.

An aspected I loved was highlighting how entitled (mainly) straight people can be when talking to someone who is queer about their personal life. Brian’s response was perfect.

I also adored Nic, Darby & Abe, but you’ll have to read/listen to understand why.

Oh, and there was a little twist/surprise that I didn’t see coming. Love it! Again read it. Maybe you’ll see the twist coming but I didn’t.

Ironically there was a part in the book which meant I was a Bored Queer Listener (sorry 😆), but it was very brief & might have been because of the mood I was in.

A fantastic book highlighting things like toxic masculinity, friendship, and a desire to fit in.

I hope there’s a sequel. ♥️

With regards to the narrator, Anthony Nyro, he did a fantastic job. Each character was unique and distinctive, which, of course, makes it easier to follow and helps the flow of the story. I also loved his tone especially with the sarcastic dialogue. Brilliant! 🥰

If I may, well I can because it’s my review! Here are 2 lines that I LOVED. Out of context, but read/listen and you’ll understand. 😀

~ “F@(ked a cartoon character” ~ Brilliant

~ “Hold on, Funky Bunch” ~ Amazing!

Thank you NetGalley & W.F. Howes Ltd, for the audiobook in return for an honest review.

Brian, a slob twenty-year-old-inexperienced werewolf, sees himself at a loss with his new lifestyle. He Hooks up with losers on Grinder and eventually kills some others when he turns. Everything changes when the experienced-thirty-year-old-something Tyler tracks him down and offers to teach him how to reign on his werewolf impulses, and as the saying goes: " The road to hell is paved with good intentions"; Brian soon realizes that Tyler's reason to help is just a front to his twisted plans.
I've had access to the Audiobook through Netgalley, and the job done by the narrator was top-notch. I highly recommend the audiobook.
