Description

MAGIC, MYTH & A FEISTY NEW HEROINE COLLIDE IN A CAPTIVATING HISTORICAL FANTASY STORY SET IN THE LUSH HAWAIIAN ISLANDS

A red-hot Hawaiian romance blooms for a buttoned-up botanist who must learn to let go and embrace the ancient voice within her.

After a failed engagement to a high-society suitor in San Francisco, Lokelani “Lucky” Letwin returns home to Hawaii, leaving her beloved rosebushes behind. She’s desperate to establish a life of her own—a daunting task for any unmarried female in the early twentieth century, but particularly for one passionate about plants.

A stubborn, song-filled girl grown into an accomplished woman, Lokelani is haunted by a family tragedy. She is as reluctant to acknowledge her past as she is to accept the supernatural force building inside her, strong and inevitable. She is a mākāhā, a Gate, ever connected to the power of the land . . . if only she will admit it.

In her quest to retrieve her roses, Lokelani is reunited with Artemus Chang, a childhood friend, who’s now a handsome and successful lawyer. As the spark between them grows, Artemus agrees to help her recover her roses, only to discover her kisses leave him literally breathless. When a mystical teacher—a kumu—enters her life, Lokelani's embrace of the voice of ancient power bubbling up within her—her leo—takes on a new urgency.

Will Lokelani continue to be bound by guilt and fear? Or will she learn to bring together her worlds as a botanist and a Gate—a conduit able to channel the power of the ʻāina into the world—to sing once more and claim her love?

A Note From the Publisher

ABOUT THE AUTHOR: Katherine Kayne writes the sort of historical fantasy she has always wanted to read in her own beach chair. With horses and hula, magic and happily ever after… with heroines to cheer for and heroes strong enough to follow their heroine’s lead. Pure aloha. She lives in Washington state and counts herself fortunate to live in Hawaii a part of each year.

“An entertaining read.”— Kirkus Reviews

“There’s a strong element of women empowerment and embracing diversity, and the varied characters are delightful and engaging. Surrounding them, the islands come alive beautifully. Bound in Flame is a historical fantasy with spirited horse rides, even more spirited riders, and forbidden romance.” — Historical Novels Review

“In this delightful debut novel Katherine Kayne sweeps us back to a Hawaii still mourning its lost kingdom, where ladies—their ballgowns covered in yards of protective fabric—gallop across the mountains and down the city streets on their way to polo matches and parties, men dance the hula as well as women, and flowers are everywhere. It’s no accident that Bound in Flame kicks off a brand-new series, aptly called The Hawaiian Ladies Riding Society.” —C.P. Lesley, New Books Network – New Books in Historical Fiction

Bound in Flame is a wonderful series debut. Part historical, part fantasy […] it features strong, courageous women who are ahead of their time. People who like magical realism and are interested in learning more about Hawaiian history and lore will find this story fascinating.” — One Book More

A beautiful setting and wonderful characters, I fell in love with this story but I couldn’t fall head over heels. Maybe it’s just wasn’t for me but the story itself was gorgeous, ant times hard to follow. I look forward to seeing more from this author!

This was a great sequel in the Hawaiian Ladies' Riding Society series, it had everything that I was hoping for from the first book. It had a great overall concept that worked in the genre. I really enjoyed the Hawaiian Island elements and that it was beautifully done in the historical fantasy setting. It left me wanting to read more from the author.

This is going to be a very short review because this is just one of those books that one should read and is meant give you the feel of how riveting this book is. The characters are amazing really, as us, the reader discovers them page by page and falls in love with them, feels with them, suffers with them and at times cries with them.

I love the way the author describes Hawaii and gives deference to the Hawaiian culture. Having grown up in Hawaii parts of this were a trip back home. The details were so vivid and accurate I could see the places. The story continues of the Hawaiian Ladies Riding Society. Tackling women's right to vote, their ancient power, and those who wish evil on the land and those who protect it.
