Tenzing Norgay

This series is more hits than misses for me. I like how diverse it has become. I wasn't aware of Tenzing Norgay, but I just spent a good chunk of my day learning about this Nepalese-Indian Sherpa mountaineer. While uplifting at times, it is important to remember that many people lose their lives trying to climb Mount Everest.

This is one of the books in the Little People, Big Dreams series which I've seen absolutely everywhere, but have never read one yet! (I know ....where have I been!?)

I chose this as my first read as I've always been fascinated by Mount Everest - not that I climb mountains, love hiking or anything remotely like that - I just love the idea of being able to stand on a piece of earth that is the closest thing to the sky (without flying)

Plus I adore views from the mountains and also views of the snow-covered peaks (on nature programmes etc)

I think that everyone has heard of Sherpa Tenzing at least once in their life, but I had absolutely no idea that he had tried to join many expiditiona before finally getting to climb, and that it took him 7 expeditions to finally reach the summit!

I loved that he'd been dreaming about it for so many years and that he had so much determination and passion to make his dreams happen!

This was a super quick read - full of information - but told in a way that was interesting and fun.
The illustrations were great too, with lots of detail to look at and prompt discussion with younger readers.

This series is actually amazing and I really must add more to my tbr - there are over 100 books in the series already and, like this one, many more still being added.

Great for school libraries, classroom learning, home education shelves and for any of us adults who just love reading!

This is the cutest book if you want to learn all about Tenzing! The illustrations are so wonderful! All of these books bring attention and the life story to so many!

Get lost in the mighty Himalayan's with this beautiful and touching book. With intricate and atmospheric illustration, and lovely and in depth writing, this book is bound to make the children dream so much bigger than they are.
As a South Asian person, it's a joy to see such on-point presentation of someone so significant in our adventure history. Loved every page of this!

I am obsessed with this man, his perseverance, his tenacity and his infectious smile.

This beautifully illustrated story of Tanzing’s life as a young child growing up in the shadow of the Himalayas and his desire to summit the top of Chomolungma (aka Everest).

I learned so much about his journey to get to the top of that mountain and cannot wait to share this story with my kids!

This is a book within a wonderful series.

Little people, big dreams is a set of mini biographies for children to learn about important men and women across the world. They have been a great success based on the simple, aspirational text and wonderful illustrations which complement the stories.

Here is a one of the best. Little Tenzing Norgay grew up in the shadow of an enormous mountain we have mostly come to know as Everest. His destiny was to one day climb the highest peak in the Himalayas.

What we have here, is that story of a committed young man to satisfy that dream, through hard work and engagement with the foreigners who came to his country to mount expeditions to the summit. The colours used to paint the illustrations are vivid and luxurious, they enhance and complete this remarkable story.

I was fascinated to learn of his diligence and service to many groups to learn his craft and master his skills. This involved many menial tasks and camp disciplines. Above all he needed to engage with groups from across the globe and by dint of his personality and hard work became a valued member of each team he joined.

However, not many, indeed very few in those times and since got the opportunity to strike out for the actual summit. Many more died in the attempt along the way and remain lost or buried on the mountain.

He was always mentioned alongside Edmund Hilary as the first to stand on top of the world. But this is the first time I have had a chance to learn more about his life.

I am now even more delighted since in his later life he gave back so much more to mountaineering and trailing in his beloved country.

An important life; an incredible man with a pioneering achievement - may his love and devotion to his people and engagement with strangers coming to his land inspire others to realise their own hopes and dreams.

Every time I get a chance to read and review these little books, I grab the opportunity. I did not know who Tenzing Norgay was, but now I do and, of course, I did know, the climber of Mount Everest. All of this series are well written, well illustrated, and quite informative. They all make for enjoyable reads and I always like spending the time with this series.

I really enjoy the books in this series and I am always really keen to get my hands on any of the new releases – even as an adult I find them really informative and for young children, they really are a great way to find out more about someone in the public eye.

This book was really good and I loved the illustrations, they really suited the book and helped bring the story of Tenzing Norgay to life. He was a really interesting character and his story is all to do with perseverance and discovery and he is a really inspirational person.

It is 5 stars from me for this one, I loved that this book let Tenzing shine when the books are so often only about Edmund Hilary – lovely to see him getting the credit that is due!

This graphic novel is very beautiful. Stunning illustrations and I absolutely did not know about this inspiring man. I wish it would be longer, but it was amazing!

I like every biography in the Little People Big Dreams series.. The text and illustrations are just right for younger readers. How good to see world famous Sherpa Tenzing Norgay presented to a new generation.

You’ll want to get your hands on this one; not only is the story inspiring, but the illustrations are spectacular.

This book is about a little boy with an adventurous heart. He was one of 13 children and learned early in life that joy comes from helping others. He also learned about determination and goal setting. He had a big dream and failed many, many times, but he always tried again. His attitude and tenacity are inspiring.

On May 29, 1953, Tenzing Norgay went up the mountain as he had done before, but this time, he came down a hero. He had summited the world’s highest point, earning him the nickname ‘Tiger of the Snows.’

This book will be a springboard to teaching children about the Sherpa people and the value of childhood dreams, tenacity, attitude, and a smile. They’ll read about the different names of the world’s highest mountain and about the momentous moment in history for all climbers.

Attitude is everything. It’s also contagious. Give children an opportunity to ‘catch’ this enthusiasm and determination.

This is a beautiful, true story. Ever since Tenzing was a young boy he was fascinated by Mt. Everest. He could see the mountain from his home. This is a story of grit and determination paying off. I loved that this was a true story with such an inspiring outcome. I would like to read more books by this publisher along these lines. I was given an ARC and this is my unbiased review. Highly recommend. I enjoyed the illustrations as well.

Favorite series! These books are wonderful for children & extremely educational. I love that they are expanding these into other areas of the world. I look forward to reading more.

What a cute book. Great illustrations. We know Tenzing as the hero who climbed the Everest. But I learned from the book about his grit to keep on trying getting closer to the dream in different ways and multiple times. Great lesson there - traveling far for your dreams and showimg up every time and with great attitude. Loved the framing of the happy kid in the end on the Everest peak.

This gorgeous little picture book was surprisingly informative for such a short read. Mountain climbing is not for me, but I enjoy reading about the people who dedicate themselves to it, even if I can't understand why. This guy was poor, went to a place where people were doing what he liked, worked hard, and accomplished something unique.

This one tells the story of a little boy who grew up in the shadows of a mountain that seemed completely unconquerable. Tensing left home with mountains in his mind and became one of the team of two who first reached the summit of Everest.

This fascinating biography series for children (4-7 years) brings the thrilling figure of Tenzing Norgay, one of the most celebrated mountaineers.

Tenzing grew up at the base of the Himalayan Mountains in Nepal. He dreamed of climbing the highest peak of Chomolungma, and touching the sky from it. When he was seven, he heard of men from the West who wanted to climb the same peak, except they called it Everest. At thirteen, he was chosen as one of the Sherpas to join the expedition. Afterwards, he joined many other expeditions, and was nicknamed the Tiger of the Snows.

On May 29, 1953, Tenzing and Edmund Hillary made it to the summit of Everest.

Tenzing is a wonderful inspiration. His adventurous spirit, love for the mountains and caring nature for those he helped climb the mountains led him to the great achievement many dreamed of reaching but never did.

This story is an exciting inspiration for children to dream and follow their hearts. It is accompanied by charming illustrations, and presented in easy to understand way for the target audience.

Less simply written than some of the others in this series, but that is most definitely a good thing. The extended descriptions allow for a greater variety of illustrations as this bravely adventurous boy grew older to become better than famous.
The illustrations by Bandana Tulachan are fun, simple, colorful, and delightful.
Well suited for reading WITH someone of any age including ESL, and great for gifting to anyone, but especially to a school or your local public library!

I wasn’t familiar with this story so I actually learned a lot! I love that this book series features such significant people that children might not otherwise be aware of. This particular story shows that if you are persistent and focused, you can achieve.

This was lovely to read about how climbing Mount Everest (or Chomolungma as it's referred to throughout the book and by the Sherpas) was Tenzing's lifelong dream and something he'd always wanted to do. From always looking up at the mountain as a child to finally achieving his dream was great to see. I always love the illustrations in these books but I thought the soft drawings of this one were particularly gorgeous and I thought they really suited the book/scenes as well. Definitely one to show kids that dreams are possible if you work for them.

I love this series, and love the very diverse selection of people coming out lately! I have heard the story of Tenzing Norgay many times, from stuff like my ESL textbooks as a child to history lessons and it is inspiring to see his story depicted in this format. Lovely illustrations and love the focus on his perseverance!

I didn’t know who Tenzing Norgay was before this book. How inspiring! We love these books and this one didn’t disappoint at all! The illustrations were different from the others in the series. Not as cutesy. These has a wonderful aged quality about them.

Tenzing Norgay is an excellent example of the type of profile that is best highlighted leveraging the Little People, Big Dreams format. This story is extremely inspiring in a number of different ways. Not only encouraging kids to pursue their dreams, but also encouraging exploration and opening up new worlds to kids as they read Tenzing's story. The illustrations are gorgeous and extremely detailed. The amount of text is appropriately balanced on each page. The themes are great for kids to internalize with a very interesting adventure as the delivery of the message.

Let me start by saying that I love the Little People Big Dreams series. Love them.

I love that they're biography for little people but I learn something in reading them too.

Did you know Tenzing Norgay? Me neither.

He was a member of the Sherpas who, from a young age, had a dream of climbing to the top of Mt. Everest.

Even though he was turned down several times and part of expeditions that didn't make it to the top, Norgay didn't give up. In 1953, after years of serving climbers and six failed attempts at the peak, Norgay reached the top.

I love that this story didn't feature on of the "white" climbers. It featured a child, a sherpa, who had a dream and didn't let failure stop him. He kept trying, even when it was hard, and was able to reach his dreams and become a bit of a legend among the climbing community.

What a story!

Failure is not far from Tenzing's vocabulary, but never giving up follows. He had this goal from his youth, but can achieved it around 30 years later! What a persistent guy!! Nevertheless he made his dreams come true with hardship, failures, and an unbeatable spirit. Such a spirit we usually lost with our hope. Here's a reminder from the author and Tenzing Norgay, that such dreams are realizable.

Oh how I wish I had more need for children's books in our library! I ADORE the entire series and Tenzing Norgay is no different. I love that each of these are a mini biography into such an important person in history, and I appreciate that each one is for a different area/culture/region.

What a wonderful book, the illustrations are so beautiful and it's such a heart warming story. I love that the Nepalese name for Mount Everest was used too!

This series is great. One thing I like about this book in particular is that it not only uses Everest, but the Tibetan word for the mountain as well.

This is a fantastic addition to the 'Little People, Big Dreams' series. Anyone who learns about Everest, should also learn about the amazing sherpa who overcame so many setbacks to be one of the first to reach the summit on that momentous day in history. This is will be a super additional reading opportunity for our mountains topic.

This series of Little People, Big Dreams books is hugely popular in my class and school and we have bought all of them. They are easy to read, accessible for all and most of all a really interesting way to learn about a diverse range of great figures in history.
I was excited when I saw this one was being released as it fits perfectly with our study of Everest. It captures the strong link between Tenzing and Chomalungma/Everest and shows how determined he is that he will get to the top one day. A brilliant read and we have already preordered it

Summary by my daughter: This was a story about a brave boy who dreamed of climbing Mount Everest. When he was seven, Tenzing Norgay heard of a group of men going to climb Mount Everest. He wanted to join, but he was too young. He tried again when he was older, but he wasn't picked. He tried a third time, and he wasn't picked first, but then two other people were needed. He was then noticed for his smile and was asked to join the climb. Of course he said yes! He and the other men started climbing, but only Tenzing and another man were able to climb to the tip-top. They placed a flag and Tenzing came down the mountain a hero.

This was another lovely Little People, Big Dreams book. Our family loves these books because they are short but interesting and often inspiring, as was the case with Tenzing Norgay's story. I highly recommend this book and others in the series for young readers to explore biographies and history.
