Tuft the World is a colorful very well illustrated tutorial and technique guide to tufting rugs and decor written and curated by Tiernan Alexander and Tim Eads. Due out 16th April 2024 from the Princeton Architectural Press, it's 208 pages and will be available in paperback and ebook formats.

It's nice to see arts/crafts tutorial instruction books aimed at other things than drawing and painting. This one is well written and accessible and probably fine for beginners to advanced crafters. The introductory sections cover a bit of background, history, and a good overview on tools and supplies including selection, maintenance, technique, and safety. The authors also cover some color theory, design, and finishing. The book is beautifully photographed throughout in color.

The following chapters contain tutorials which build up progressively from simple to more advanced techniques and projects. Each tutorial includes tools and supplies in a bullet list along with both written and photographic tutorial instructions. Templates are not included in the physical book. Important alternatives and creative ideas are provided in highlighted text boxes in the tutorials.

The authors and publisher have also included some useful appendices including a glossary and bibliography links which are refreshingly international in scope. This is a well made book which would make a superlative choice for group artists' studio, makers' groups, school or public library acquisition, activity groups, and the artist's home studio. The authors are clearly accomplished artists and they write out their working processes well on the page.

Five stars.

Disclosure: I received an ARC at no cost from the author/publisher for review purposes

Tuft the World gave me so much insight into what tufting is. I grew up doing latch hooks, so this was intriguing.
The illustrations are beautiful, and the techniques and directions made me think this is something I can absolutely do.
If you can get this book in paperback or an e book that has a color option you'll enjoy this even more.
Thank you to Chronicle Books and Net Galley for a digital ARC of this title in exchange for my honest review.

Just picked up my first hobby of the new year, you'll hear from me when it won't come out as in these pictures after the first try.
The explanations are excellent, the pictures and the models set you in the right mood… I'm gonna make a rug!

Thanks to Chronicle Books and NetGalley, who provided me with a copy of this book in exchange for an honest opinion.

Tufting is something I’m really interested and this book was so useful in telling me what I need/techniques to get started! And the projects included are so cute and broken down for beginners! Definitely recommend to those interested in tufting.

I’m a big believer in the idea that before you start a new hobby, you should read a book about it first. That led me to this book. Recently, I took up the punch needle, and I kept hearing about tufting. I wasn’t sure if it was the same thing or similar. This book was so helpful in explaining differences between the two crafts. I have so much respect for people who take up tufting now!
This book has so many helpful photos and lots of great information. What an excellent guidebook for tuft crafting.
Thank you for the eARC! I learned so much!

This was a fantastic introductory book into the world of tufting!

It went through everything you would need to get started: materials list, tools, techniques, how to get started, project ideas, etc.

One of my favorite things about the book were the artist spotlights and the historical information shared.

While the project ideas were not my cup of tea, I thought it was very diverse and would be a great starting point and inspiration to those picking up the craft.

As an avid crafter, I obviously jumped on the tufting bandwagon, but found myself quickly burning out on the craft. I don't have a strong desire to sell handmade rugs, and my home only needs so many. This book doesn't spend a huge amount of time on floor-based projects, instead also covering a range of makes from wearables to furniture to wall-decor. I am personally jazzed about the cat tree project in the book. I received an early digital copy of this book through Netgalley, but I look forward to adding the physical book to my personal craft library.
