Description

In the fourth book of Talon, James Boschert delivers fast-paced adventures, packed with violent confrontations and intrepid heroes up against hard odds. Imprisoned for brawling in Acre, a coastal city in the Kingdom of Jerusalem, Talon and his longtime friend Max are freed by an old mentor from the Order of the Templars and offered a new mission in the fabled city of Constantinople. There Talon finds that winning the Emperor's favor obligates him to follow the Emperor to war in a willful expedition to free Byzantine lands from the Seljuk Turks. And beneath the pageantry of the great city, seditious plans are being fomented by disaffected aristocrats who have made a reckless deal with Arab pirates to sell the one weapon the Byzantine Empire has to defend itself, Greek Fire, to an implacable enemy bent upon the Empire's destruction. Talon and Max will find themselves in a fight for their lives Ð on the sea in perilous battles, and in the labyrinthine back streets of Constantinople where Talon must outwit his own kind, the assassins in the pay of a treacherous alliance.

A Note From the Publisher

James Boschert is the author of the Talon Series, set in 12th century Palestine and includes, Assassins of Alamut, Knight Assassin, and Assassination in Al-Qahirah, and most recently, Greek Fire. The Books of Talon have been translated into Turkish. In a different vein, Boschert wrote When the Jungle Is Silent, a novel on "The Confrontation," the Jungle War in Malaysia in the 1960's and where he served as a young soldier.

James Boschert grew up in the then colony of Malaya in the early fifties. Post war Malaya was going through the turmoil of a Chinese Communist insurgency that threatened the future of the country. He learned first hand about terrorism as the CCO were fighting the British Army for possession of the dense jungles of Malaya and attacking convoys of food trucks and any other soft targets they could find. His school was burnt down and the family while traveling, narrowly survived an ambush. They were saved by a patrol of Gurkhas which drove off the insurgents.

Advance Praise

"In 1176 AD, while in the city of Acre in the Levant, Sir Talon de Gilles and his Sergeant named Max are ordered to accompany Sir Guy de Veres, the Knight Templar Senior, to Constantinople. The Templars are to meet secretly with the Emperor of Byzantium to discuss an impending crusade. While in Constantinople, Talon befriends the Byzantine emissary, Alexios Kalothesos. Talon soon becomes entangled in palace intrigue. His discovery of Greek fire by the ships of the Byzantine navy, used as a weapon to destroy enemy ships, falls into the hands of an enemy of Byzantium. The secret of Greek fire had been well guarded by the Byzantine government.
This novel is the fourth book of the adventures of Sir Talon. I have read all the books in the series and enjoyed reading each one. The author knows his history – the French, Byzantine and Arab cultures – and molds his stories into exciting adventure tales where his hero is constantly put in difficult situations. I would recommend reading the previous three books only to obtain a better background of the main characters, especially Sir Talon, who as a young boy, had been captured by the Arabs and trained as an assassin.
I highly recommend this book and series to readers who enjoy exciting tales of the Levant and France during the 12th century." --Jeff Westerhoff of Historical Novel Society
