“Bernard Besson takes the eco-thriller to a whole new level in his spectacular The Greenland Breach. Masterfully paced and wondrously prescient, here is a cautionary tale where colorful characters battle both man and nature in trying to save the planet from a combination of the two. Equal parts Clive Cussler and Michael Crichton, it is a terrific story that charges out of the gate and speeds in relentless fashion to a wholly satisfying finish.” –Jon Land, bestselling author of Strong Rain Falling

“Original and harrowing.” –Cosmopolitan

“This is cousin to thoughtful works such as Buckell’s Arctic Rising, but the narrative’s tone and tendency toward grand spectacle resembles more lurid thrillers like The Day After Tomorrow...Besson constructs a complex plot and confidently portrays the grandiosity as it unfolds.” –Publishers Weekly

“For those who enjoy a rollercoaster of a ride with thrills galore, this book certainly delivers… For the James Bond fan, there are plenty of sophisticated gadgets, fiendishly complex puzzles and clever use of technology. However, the aspect of the novel which I most enjoyed was that, if you look beneath the glossy, high-paced surface, there is a thought-provoking plea to re-examine the way we live and act today. Global warming is but one of the culprits in this story. Corporate and personal greed, national pride, inflated egos and lack of concern for the future of humanity are all equally to blame. Yet the author conveys this message without any preaching, simply by recounting an exciting adventure.” --Crime Fiction Lover

A suspense thriller that capture your attention from the first page and keeps you aroused through the entire book. Set in the not-too-distant future, the story includes a rich variety of characters as the protagonist and the reader must try too understand the purpose behind the apparently simply assignment of a former soldier to provide protection for the daughter of a rich businessman. Competing nations and companies, along with environmentalists and national groups create a backdrop for a fast-moving story where everyone is in danger and no one is what they seem to be. The story is imaginative and the action is so compelling that you have to keep reading. The story has the unique ability to keep the reader somewhat in the dark, but still provide a powerful incentive to keep reading and discover the unknown elements. The descriptions of the natural disasters playing out in Greenland are so vivid they are chilling. The rapidly-changing environment creates more danger and tension in the story. It is definitely worth reading again.

intelligent and literate, with an important theme which - right from the start - the author startles us into grappling with; frankly i found the story subsumed to the theme in such a way that it was at war with the story - sort of buried it despite the characterisations which were sometimes raised to a level of hysteria in order to accommodate the significance - in fact, i learned a lot! and while i would not say this is the most captivating work as far as a novel goes, its theme is riveting - i'd recommend it and highly regard the author for tackling it!

An edge-of-your-seat thriller that keeps the reader guessing combines with a terrifying look at a world (possibly) just around the corner. While ice sheets falling into the sea creating tidal waves is something we've all heard about as a result of global warming, the threat from methane gas released from under the permafrost is unfamiliar - and frightening. The close-up look at Greenland and the dangers facing the Inuit culture are enlightening. It's especially great to see this global crisis from a standpoint different from that portrayed by the American media. The French protagonists are well fleshed out and I hope to encounter them in a future novel.

A fast paced adventure of political and industrial intrigue set against global warming. The author creates detailed images of Greenland as the icecaps melt.

The Greenland Breach by Bernard Besson Translated by Julie Rose Rating ***** 5/5

A powerful, fast paced superbly written eco-thriller which will thoroughly entertain.

A powerful, fast actioned thriller, The Greenland Breach just pulled me in. I couldn't put it down. Although written in French and partly based in France the novel translated superbly into English.

This is a political eco-thriller incorporating the greed of conglomerates and those abusing their power. The ice caps of Greenland are breaking up and will cause havoc in Northern Europe, Canada and the USA. However, the despair and destruction of many peoples' lives and livelihoods not to mention the ongoing damage to the Earth is of little consequence to those who are only interested in money.

Enter the Fermatown Team, consisting of John Spencer Larivière; an ex French lntelligence Officer, Victoire his wife and Luc, the whiz kid on Computers and Technology. John had received injuries whilst in active service but remains a very strong athletic force. Victoire has a past which threatens to overtake her and Luc, the bisexual with such an adorable character. They are pitted against all sides but who is telling the truth.

Besson has incorporated a wide variety of characters into a well thought out plot or should I say plots. The Greenland Breach never lets up, it is just a page turner of a high standard. I won't give any spoilers but the distress of Captain Loïc Le Guévenec of the Bouc-Bel-Air and the resourcefulness of his wife Isabelle add to intrigue. Although Luc gave a completely different aspect to the plot, especially when he went undercover; a super-fit sexual athlete, Sent from my iPad

The scenes when John was fighting for his life in the cold wilderness of Greenland will stay with me as will the depicted ecological disaster that awaits us. Monsieur Besson looks to have led an extremely interesting life and this is reflected in The Greenland Breach. An author to look out for.

I was given a copy of The Greenland Breach for an honest review, which I have done. Thanks.

Hi Karen,
My next review is as follows:-
"The Greenland Breach"written by Bernard Besson and published in paperback by Le French Book on April 30, 2014. 285 pages. ISBN-13: 978-1939474070

This very fast, action packed thriller gripped me from the moment I started reading it. Originally published in French and in part based in that country the book has been brilliantly translated into English by Julie Rose. This is an eco-thriller supposedly happening in the near future and written to envisage a time when all of the ecological disasters anticipated by the climate change lobby occur at once.

A doomsday scenario is started, when parts of Greenland (which is more or less completely made of ice) start to break up and the ice cap starts melting fast as a result of global warming. A ship owned by a gas company and carrying precious deep ice cores has just left Baffin Bay when a tidal wave hits it, which in turn is on it's way to the East coast of America. Details of this catastrophe are broadcast to the Worlds media and three people in a strategic consulting group contact the ships captain through his company and offer their specialist services.

They quickly become involved in a race against time and against competing other factions to rescue the ice cores aboard the vessel. These precious scientific samples could save the Earth from disaster. To this basic plot are added many sub-plots, which involve many other characters and a lot of this occurs in France as of course the author hails from that country.

It seemed strange reading a book that was not about crime or action and adventure, but was about extremes of weather which is of course much more important! The general plot was extremely diverting from the usual books I read for review purposes and that is not a bad thing. The well plotted story line was very gripping and the amorous goings on of some of the characters (well they are French) was also very entertaining. I must admit that I did not intend to read this book and put off doing so for some time but now that I have done so I am very pleased with the opportunity that I was given. I have not had the pleasure of reading anything by Bernard Besson before and looking on-line I see that this is the only title that has been translated into English so far, but perhaps more will become available over time. So if you want to read an exciting book that illustrates remarkably what could happen to our planet as a result of global warning than this is a very gripping example.

Best wishes,

Terry
