Description

When a naturalized American citizen turns up missing in Iraq, Brent Marks fights the Goliath U.S. government with its own Constitution. Santa Barbara accountant Ahmed Khury responds to the plea of his brother, Sabeen, a suspected money launderer in Iraq. Before Ahmed realizes what has happened to him, he is in Guantanamo Bay Detention Camp, being subjected to torture to extract information that he doesn't have. The courtroom drama mounts as the drama outside the courtroom explodes, and when murder, corruption and cover-up enters the picture, nobody, including Brent, is safe in the story of the shame of our modern history.

Advance Praise

"Eade, a lawyer by profession, weaves legal dialogue, corruption and international action to create a pacey read with echoes of Grisham, Baldacci and Clancy nipping at his writing heels. Law issues as well as forensics and police procedures are clearly explained with such authority as to add gritty realism in and out of the courthouse, but it's within the court drama that Eade really packs some punch. With some success with the first book of the series, Predatory Kill, this second saga looks sure to satisfy his growing base of readers. Out October 17th." SPR Review"It's all about delicate balance of power and experience - something gone awry in A Patriot's Act, and something explored through intimate descriptions. As Eade deftly juxtaposes the lives of two very different Americans experiencing two very different circumstances, he delves into the politics and processes of prisoners and military men alike, exposing the wounds of their experience and psyches and the points at which man's inhumanity stems from a worldview that dehumanizes and rips apart systems and people. D. Donovan, Midwest Book Review."Kenneth Eade is a master of suspense and unexpected twists, which makes "A Patriot's Act" an exciting, unpredictable page-turner, and a must-read for anyone who loves legal thrillers." I Publisher News

"This is a fast-paced, well-written legal thriller dealing with negative consequences of the Patriot Act, a law enacted post 9/11 that in various ways compromises certain Constitutional rights guaranteed to U.S. citizens. If this does not sound like an exciting premise, author Kenneth Eade proves otherwise in this novel. It quickly grabs the reader's interest and tells a tale in personal terms with a small cast of characters involved in action and courtroom drama. Constructed of short chapters, with much dialogue, it builds momentum and suspense. The author, a lawyer, writes authoritatively about legal matters but with enough clarity for the layperson.

The drama unfolds from multiple viewpoints--lawyer, prisoner, prison guard, private detective, FBI agent, villainous military types, and others. Hero of the tale is Brent Marks, an idealistic lawyer determined to challenge injustices of the post-9/11 legal atmosphere such as unjust arrests and detentions, denial of rights, prisoner abuse and torture, and other outrages reported at Guantanamo Bay, Abu Ghraib, and similar sites. Marks is drawn into this drama by a private investigator colleague, who is helping the wife of Ahmad, a Muslim American citizen, who has disappeared. Investigation reveals he has been taken into custody, imprisoned at Gitmo, and undergone torture and other abuses. Outraged by what he discovers, Marks decides to challenge Ahmad's unjust detention and essentially goes to war against the U.S. government, filing a writ of habeas corpus challenging his wrongful detainment and taking other legal actions to set him free. Can such a fight be won?

The answer is revealed in the latter half of the book, mostly courtroom drama--jury selection, opening statements, witness Q & A (often with flashbacks), evidence presentations, expert testimony, and so forth. This novel should appeal especially to fans of courtroom dramas. It begs the question of what exactly patriotism is--blind allegiance to authority, or standing up for what is right as guaranteed in the U.S. Constitution." O Barnack

Amazing book!!! This was so well written and intense that it felt real; like you were watching it all play out. Using the Constitution against the Patriot Act was one of my favorite aspects of this book because it really makes you think about the law and how it affects the lives of Americans. The dialogue in this book keeps the momentum going and builds up the tension for a phenomenal book. Great read!
