It’s the early 1990’s. The newly elected President learns that the CIA has a dirty secret that they’ve kept hidden from him and the military. The agency has developed a secret weapon called The God Project that would give them the power to conquer a nation…but somehow they’ve lost it. The President assigns Malcolm Keyes, a speechwriter who remembers everything he sees and hears, to uncover the conspiracy and find the weapon before the CIA, or a rival government, does and gets the “God-like” power to control the world.

Consider yourself cynical about politics? This book will confirm your worst fears! The title sets the wrong image of the content. Initially I thought it may be a Dan Brown type. However, it gave a deep insight into modern, dirty politics in a very readable way.

An imaginative story which proposes a way America might deal with foreign uprisings whilst avoiding hostility from the American public. But every scheme has it's weakness and there is always the possibility that cutting edge science can be unpredictable. Add political chicanery and egotism into the mix and you have a gripping novel indeed!

No matter how cynical you may be about the state of the American government, this book will take you further. The story is very imaginative and very enthralling. The characters are true to life and have their foibles. The author truly understands how government works, and displays both the activity and the philosophy in explicit detail. Among the characters are a president we will never have, a preacher we need, and a CIA director who seems to exemplify the current state of government. Although the book lays bare all the dirty stuff, it offers little hope for change. The best I could hope for is people will read, come to an understanding, and actually get involved in the process. That said, this is a very good book on many levels and I have no hesitation in recommending it for pure entertainment.

my expectations were different so it took me a while to settle into this intelligent and curious project - we slowly realise what we're up against as the protagonist is asked to investigate an organisation buried deep in US govt designed by an elite to promote their projects - basic agendas of progressive, democratic and Republican are alluded to in starkest form without being cartoonish (which is I suppose what we have come to expect from thrillers such as these): duly impressed and gripped by ideas Stan Lee lead me into an incredible plot line/conspiracy story that mushroomed into something credible and enthralling - not to say witty. Malcolm, a man trusted by the President, has an eidetic memory and we get to sit in on what he does. the plot keeps thickening until we are in on top level security meetings with the rich elite and their operators, not to speak of the President.
the plot itself behind it all - the 'God project' is not entirely convincing (and things descend into sub-James Bond action at times but it's entertaining enough) - but its ethos and easy dissemination is utterly credible! His controversial views at the time certainly make this book seem up to date since nothing has really changed - military complex, religion and charismatic leaders still push all the buttons, and the little guys sometimes win - people do things against their best interests all, all the time. I could not put this one down the longer I read it ...

Complex story which paints a very bad picture of the US government. Is it really like that? The story line was very interesting and not beyond the realms of possibility, which terrifies me. Sounds as though Halliday would make a better President that recent incumbents.. Not a book which left me with a strong impression.

THE GOD PROJECT 4 stars
If you are a fan of espionage thrillers, then this is one for you
This is a political thriller by Stan R Lee and not the man behind the Marvel superheroes!
This book was originally published in the 90's although you wouldn't have guessed it.
American politics are at the forefront of this novel.
Once I had ploughed my way through the machinations of US Elections (more than I needed or wanted to know), there are glimpses of a really good thriller which unfortunately is spoiled by too much focusing on what goes on behind closed doors in the White House, which went on and on.
The story, when it finally starts, is about a secret which the CIA has kept from everybody, including the President and the military.
The President, who doesn't know what is being secreted away, needs to find it quickly as it could affect national security. At the core of the story is A.I (Artificial Intelligence) But if I revealed what kind of AI is at the centre of the story, it will spoil it for you.
Malcolm Hayes is a speech writer but has something unique. He can remember everything he sees or hears which is why the President Richard Halliday has him as his executive assistant. The President has heard about a top-secret CIA plan named The God Project and tells Keyes to get inside the CIA and get evidence of this plan.
He soon finds out that the god of the title stands for Games of Defence. What does it mean? What exactly has been manufactured? How has it disappeared?
Keyes learns that there is another problem. The CIA are looking for a missing man who has knowledge of the plan and it is thought it is a televangelist John Burns. This man has charisma, he uses a lot of insight and uses convincing arguments to almost brainwash people. And he is a powerful figure, with his followers growing dangerously fast, making the government nervous. Can Keyes find him before the CIA do, and what does he know? , The story from here once again concentrates on US politics and in some parts it really starts to grab the reader’s attention, but then it gets to be too clever for its own good.
The problem with this is that although most of the characters are believable, the dialogue can be a bit preachy.
A bit of light relief is the romantic relationship which develops between Halliday and Madeline Smith, the Vice-President. Some of the things and situations Keyes gets into are amusing.
It has a lot of potential to be a good thriller. The dialogue can be pretty sarcastic, but in a harmless way.
It is a difficult book to review without giving away any spoilers..
I give this book 4 stars.

Only in America? And only in D.C.? One has to wonder just how much factuality is buried in this tale of politics, deceit, ladder climbing and back stabbing, (well that is all part of politics). Add in some humor, a bit of sex, some spy spoofing and this book seems to have it all. A good plot made improbable by the very scenario described, huge area, heavily guarded (think Area 51) and only a few “insiders” in the know. Pot shots at every agency, CIA, FBI, Secret Service, no one is immune as the author artfully blends elements of the press, religion, politics, National Defense and the numerous characters and personalities providing the make-up of the “heart of our nation”. Enter an individual possessing an eidetic mind and no more fear of leaked documents. If it seems I have not told much of the story it is deliberate. Why ruin it? This is a book review not a book report.
