Today she decides to join the other girls in the sandbox. But one of her classmates tells Julia that unless she is wearing fingernail polish, she can't play with them. After all, only the prettiest girls wear nail polish. Julia is shocked and hurt. Isn't she pretty enough? Her mom has told her, "It is what's in your heart that matters." “Lindsey Jensen Berke has written and Susan Shorter has illustrated a wonderful book that deals with a touch of bullying and answering a question that many parents face from their daughters...Am I Pretty? Julia is a happy, adjusted little girl who loves recess at her preschool. One day she is told by other girls that since she does not have her nails polished, she cannot play with them, that only the prettiest girls have their nails polished. Julia asks her mother about this when she gets home and her mother answers her in the best way! She ends by saying that pretty is not a big enough word to describe Julia. An excellent and poignant message.

The writing is straight on and has a feel that little girls, and boys, will enjoy.

The illustrations are delightful and playful.

Children will love this book. It would also be a wonderful read aloud in the classroom or for library story time.”

This book is great for students who show individuality. At the elementary level, it can be hard to find books that are easy for students to read and relate to. Julia is a well developed character who many children can relate to. I know this book will be a great addition to our school library.

Great message. I thought this would be another one of those boobs that clumsily delivers a message for kids, but the book/story is great. I will be reading this to my 4 year old soon!
