Starling Ranch Inn promises to be a tropical paradise, and Sybil can’t wait to escape there, all expenses paid. Well technically the expenses were paid—last year, when she was supposed to go to Hawaii for her honeymoon with her then-fiancé Jamie. What a cute, summer beach read! It takes place at a tropical beach resort giving off all the fun, summer vibes. It’s lighthearted and cozy making it the perfect book to bring on your next vacation or even reading poolside. I love Hannah Brown’s writing style, it is beautiful, fresh and fun with just enough conflict to keep me turning the pages. The storyline had me interested right from the start. Sybil, a runaway bride runs into not one, but two of her ex-fiancés while at a tropical resort. Fake dating is one of my all time favorite tropes and brought so much humor and emotion to this story. I’m not usually a second chance romance girlie and definitely don’t love the miscommunication trope but I dunno, somehow it just worked with this one. Both main characters are likable and the character development was so well done. I am loving Hannah Brown’s books and can’t wait to see what she comes up with next.

As a disclaimer, I hadn’t read The Mistakes We Never Made (the first book of this series) prior to reading this one but I found that this could be read as a standalone perfectly fine!
This book follows the past relationships of Sybil, a wild spirit who is trying to find herself in this world. I love that this book features more than one trope at a time, offering Second Chance Romance, Fake Dating, and ultimately the Love Triangle to meet in a rich, funny, and emotionally gripping story! Throughout the entire book the character growth and development of Sybil had me on an emotional rollercoaster (and I loved every second of it).
The writing style of this author is super digestible and easy to follow, with lavish descriptions and emotionally gripping ways of digging into the insecurities so many of us harbor within. Brown, through the main female character of Sybil, dives into the fears of not being “good enough” for the person we are with, for the hardships that come with finding who you are in this world, and the scariness of voicing what we truly want in fear that we could never achieve it; in this case, the kind of love and security with someone who sees you for who you wholly are, darkness and all. Sybil not only grapples with insecurity in her own sense of self, but insecurity in her relationships and the experience of growing up; watching friends grow into titles like “mom”, and experiencing this feeling of falling behind in “adulthood”.
This book will take you through all the emotions and feeling of being seen, offering a fun and rich summer beach read!
