Description

Death or Glory? Who wins? Who survives? Who dies?

Two suicidal strangers, failing actor Owen and traumatised Ukrainian refugee Becky, postpone death on the Humber bridge to honey-trap married men. They make easy money until they reach Manchester when a corrupt civil servant dies on Becky in a hotel room. Owen steals the dead man’s identity to con a small fortune from a brain-damaged hero’s trust fund. His impersonation is good, but doesn’t fool a cynical cop or the deceased’s self-harming granddaughter. As their blackmail scam spirals out of control, Owen and Becky must confront their own personal demons or risk drowning in a sea of corruption and criminality.

A Note From the Publisher

Andrew writes ... Most of us believe we’re in control of our lives, but in reality fate dictates our destinies. I suppose After the Bridge is my noir take on the nihilistic worldview of Charles Bukowski’s Pull A String, A Puppet Moves poem. Unexpected events derail Owen and Becky’s lives and leave them at the mercy of others. Although After the Bridge has hard-hitting adult themes, hopefully they are never gratuitous or salacious. As a crime writer and a humanist, I want to avoid glorifying violence, sexual abuse and aggression.

‘A well-written, edge-of-your-seat thriller that will keep you up reading past your bedtime. Two strangers meet on a bridge, and hatch a plan that leads to no good. The characters are great...dark, funny, a must-read. I enjoyed it and think you will too. Jump on this!’

eik, this book was a goody. it didnt follow any of the tropes or premise ive read before. and Andrew has told a tale of flawed characters who you want to both shake but also cheer on sometimes. which in itself builds its own kind of tension. because who are you rooting for if anyone? there certainly are some bad guys in this one though and you need to know its definitely a book that comes under the "noir" side of life.
the way the chaotic tension is built both from the vents in the book and also how each character is developed and described is just fantastic. you have that leaning forward turning the page kind of feeling all the way through.
ive never read a book like this before. im finding it hard to describe without going into detail of the plot. but i know it made me feel, and it was a definite high five and sucker punch of a read all at once. and i thoroughly enjoyed it.
