Description
Four friends play to win… and another husband dies. This time it’s a crime from 1924. Can the Cardboard Cottage sleuths solve a cold case where yet another husband fell prey to murder?
Vintage game store owner, Amy Sparks, and her three best friends volunteer to recreate local history for a fundraiser. Their stage is the graveyard—also known as The Silent City. But when an antique necklace drops in Amy’s lap, she realizes she holds the key to a cold case murder.
When the old Ouija board reveals a secret, the Cardboard Cottage sleuths consult the mystical talking board for the killer’s name, but instead, it spells out danger when the planchette points a finger at one of them.
Have they unknowingly called up a restless spirit wanting revenge? Can Amy solve this tale of deception before innocent lives are changed forever? And will the Silent City give up its secrets in time?

The blurb intrigued me enough to try this book, so I requested it. I started this book, and felt like these characters were so fleshed-out, that maybe I’d missed something…then I found out this is the fifth book in the series. No matter, I continued the book as authors usually are good about keeping new readers to the series up on previous events. I’m happy to say this author did a great job. I enjoyed this book very much even though this didn’t really have any paranormal elements, which I enjoy the most. This book also has a very old-fashioned feeling, sort of like we were in the past but not. I think readers of cozies will definitely enjoy this series so give it a try. Recommend. I was provided a complimentary copy which I voluntarily reviewed.

Well crafted story and interesting characters. I thought this author was a skillful story teller. Many obscure references that are fully explained made the story unique. Mystery fans will find this a must read.

Ouija & Haints in the Silent City, the fifth whodunit in Jane Elzey's captivating Cardboard Cottage Mystery series, presents an engaging mystery that will keep you on the edge of your seat. This time, the four best friends—Amy, Zelda, Rian, and Genna—become drawn to a hundred-year-old cold case murder that transpired in their beloved Ozark town of Bluff City. And as Amy points out, they never give up on a puzzle until every piece fits.
Oh, what fun! Elzey's skillful attention to detail and nuanced way of sprinkling clues throughout the story make for a mystery that feels interactive to the reader. And like each book in The Cardboard Cottage Mystery series, Elzey's latest is a celebration of female friendships.
The truth is, Ouiji & Haints is much more than a cozy mystery; the history of the culture, conventions, and style of the Roaring Twenties provides depth and flair throughout. (I certainly learned a thing or two!)
Favorite Quote: Looking with eyes open only to the goal ahead left out a lot of things to be seen.
Thank you to NetGalley, Scorpius Carta Press, and Jane Elzey for providing an advance electronic copy in exchange for my candid opinion. Ouiji & Haints launches on May 1, 2025, and is available for pre-order now. Grab yourself a copy and add it to your summer reading list.
