Description

Events in our lives, both good and bad, form rings in us like the rings in a tree. Each ring records memories that affect our feelings, our relationships, and our thoughts about God.

In this classic work, David Seamands encourages us to live compassionately with ourselves as we allow the Holy Spirit to heal our past. As he helps us name hurdles in our lives—such as guilt, poor self-worth, and perfectionism—he shows us how we can find freedom from our pain and enjoy the abundant life God wants for us.

Damaged emotions come in many forms and those emotions can reflect our relationships with others, how we view ourselves, and how we view God. The strength of this study is of the emotions and how to identify our damaged emotions and the harm that they may be causing. This book does validate those emotions however, it also shows the truth of those emotions and also shows a greater truth in whom God is.

The 10 chapters reflect the different damaged emotions we may acquire thru guilt, debt collecting, wounds, low self-esteem, perfectionism, and the mask that we wear. There is identification of the damaged emotions, the symptoms, and the process of healing. The healing is complete when there is a recycling and in the recycling God makes good on our damaged emotions thru His redemption. In our damaged emotions, it is not our goodness, but our need for God’s goodness that makes us good even in the ugly.

A great insight and I think is what gives strength to those suffering from damaging emotions is not how we have come to have these emotions but how we respond to them. Our response can determine if we fall into a depression such as indecision, anger and a sense of unfairness or injustice.

It is in our earliest system of relationships in how we are treated and loved and cared for, we develop our mental health in relationships to others, God and ourselves. There is a hope and it is in our relationship with the creator where we can find healing in the truth.

A special thank you to David C Cook, and NetGalley for an ARC in exchange for an honest review

In 1966 David Seamands preached a sermon called “The Holy Spirit and the Healing of Damaged Emotions ” Some of the damaged emotions include anxiety, inadequacy and inferiority.

In this book David also reminds us that the world is made for forgiveness, it is made for grace. It is made for the love of life. He also mentions two causes for emotional problems in Christians 1.) Failure to receive Forgiveness. 2.) Failure to Give Forgiveness.

We are reminded too that not only did Jesus Bore our Sins in his body on the cross but he also took on our entire range of emotions.

Low Self Esteem is another emotional battle and that it paralyzes potential. Low self esteem also makes it hard to build relationships with other people. We are reminded too of the importance of taking our self estimate to God.

Perfectionism is another real emotional issue with some evangelical Christians. We are also told that the perfectionist needs to be his or her true self in Christ.

David also points out Depression as another emotional problem many Christians face and depression can have many causes some of which are related to Body Chemistry. And sometimes unforgiveness can lead to depression.

Though First published in 1981 this book is a timely reminder of how fragile our emotions can be.

Five out of five Stars…

Happy Reading
